there was no solution because there really IS no solution. I watched the video from those in Australia and found that highly informative.
I also read a lot of the comments and as usual, a bunch of nasty people name-calling others because they don't agree with either the writer or others who comment or give suggestions.
DH had a "solution" last night. The only way school shootings will stop is to home school everyone; i.e., cyber schools.
There are suggestions not to publicize the names of these shooters, etc. because of the "credit" these shooters get - their so-called 15 minutes of fame and copycat shooters wouldn't be so quick to try the same thing. The governor of Colorado refused to name the shooter for that reason.
I would tend to agree - with all that you say...OP

There really is no solution. Your DH had a good idea about home schooling and/or cyber schools. I have been thinking the same thing for years. It would also end schoolhouse bullying, and maybe some of these "shooters" would not feel so "victimized" by the other students and go on a rampage, although that is no doubt only part of their problems, as well.
I also agree about not publicizing the shooters names, etc., but then the public would be complaining that they "need to know," not that I see how it matters. It would definitely take away the "fame" aspect of it. good thinking from you and your DH, although I am sure some will disagree, but what else is new.
Well written, elaborate and logical, yet repulsive reductionist argument - for doing nothing

by trying to strictly confine discussion context to Lanza and Sandy Hook. Straw-woman Megan McArdle presumes the ultimate goal is pie-in-the-sky zero crime in a perfect world. Back here in the real world, we strive to reduce these numbers to the very best of our fallible mortal abilities, while staying mindful of the human tragedy and national shame those numbers represent.

Pa. couple fight to not have to use township water
- The Associated Press
HOLLIDAYSBURG, Pa. — An elderly central Pennsylvania couple is fighting a court order forcing them to use township-supplied water because they say the chlorine in it makes the woman sick.
Donald and Janet Burket were forced by a Blair County judge to tap into Greenfield Township's water system in 2008 to comply with a local ordinance. That ruling was upheld by a state appeals court.
The Burkets complied ...
