Guardian ad Litem

Posted: Dec 13, 2016

Hi All, I'm set to retire in May of next year. I'm looking to do some volunteer work. I'd like to know if anyone has done Guardian ad Litem work as a volunteer, or anyone who otherwise has personal experience. I read on the Internet basically what it entails, but mostly what I'm getting is the rewarding aspect. I'd like the good, the bad and the ugly. I'm prepared to get emotionally wound up and likely frustrated, but I'm ready to handle that part of it. Does a judge really care what a Plain Jane volunteer has to say?;

can be very rewarding - knew one

I knew a lady years ago who was a guardian. She worked hard to keep families together if possible, keep consistent people in a child's life if that child had to be removed (in cases where parents had to be kept separate from kids, kept friends). She was supportive to all sides. When she needed to be tough, she could do it, and all sides knew her to be fair. I've seen her in court. Judges know the people involved in the lives of troubled families, and guardian ad litmus are a part of the process. They can do what others can't do. Her job was often hard, often heartbreaking, but she also saw families mended and back together. If you want to be such a guardian, please only do it if you're committed to helping people figure out their problems and help them get done whatever has to be done. It can take years in a given family. Please keep in mind that this is a long-term job.

Thank You - From OP-see msg

Thanks so much. See, here's the thing with me. I'm not for "keeping the family together," when there is protracted neglect or abuse. I'm also not for taking a kid who has bonded for years from very young with a good foster family, then given back to the blood family--even if the blood family has cleaned up their act. Often, the foster family is all they've known, and I think it's destructive to a child to be ripped from the only parents they really knew. I also know of cases where a parent never "signed away their parental rights," only to show up, and the court rips the kid away from their stable environment.

So, I'm thinking maybe this isn't for me. It just disgusts me when a kid is bonded then ripped away, even when the foster family is willing to adopt. I don't consider this in the best interest of the child.

Thank you for your input.

I am open to additional input from others who have specific knowledge.

Ghadaffi called for the cease fire. "Beware of getting what you wish for. The ceasefire Colonel Gaddafi has just announced is not a vindication of the decision of the UN security council to get tough, nor a result of the wide backing the vote got from the Arab League and, unusually, three members of the African Union.
