Record campaign spending

Posted: Oct 26, 2012

I might be the only one, but this leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

The amount of money spent campaigning in this country is ridiculous.  And for what?  Do those ads even do anything?  Do they change peoples' minds?  I don't think they do.  All they ever seem to me is a childish tit-for-tat that makes us all look stupid.

It just feels like both sides are trying to create the ultimate Hollywood film, and whoever's movie is better wins the prize. I'm aware that is the point of campaigning, but the level it has been taken to is above and beyond.

I seem to be wearing mine out! LOL

But, yes, I think it's obscene on how much money is spent on ANY presidential campaign that could be put to better use.

Maybe we should take up a petition that would allow no limit on contributions collected for a presidential campaign, but the nominees can only spend 1% of that money and the rest would go to charity.

That's a thought - RC

In the UK election, each party was allowed 4 broadcasts in England, and 6 between Scotland and Wales. That also seems reasonable.

We all seem to dislike super-PACs, maybe we could rally together and run them out of town. :P

UK? How many TV stations do they have? - backwards typist

I never really think about TV in other countries. In fact, I only know about the BBC because they have one here called BBC America which is all English programming.

Anyway, I don't think superPACs will be around for next election with all the people up in arms about them. I'm hoping some politicians (a lot of them don't like them either), will step up and make a bill and pass it into law to stop them. Lot of grumbling in the House and Senate about them.

We'll just have to wait and see. Maybe writing our reps after the election will help sway them and they'll do the right thing.
I'm not sure - RC

I was there not too long ago, and they have numerous BBC channels, but they also seem to broadcast a lot of channels from other countries, which was nice. There is a surprising amount of American TV there. I watched 2 American shows for the first time while I was in England, because I don't have TV here, which is kind of funny.

But I like the idea of only being able to air a set number of commercials.

I hope you're right about the super-PACs. It's a circus!

You're definitely not the only one - Fanatical Hypocrite

I feel the same way. Campaign spending and the proliferation of commercials need to be curbed. Glad you pointed out the British system. I think a similar model needs to be implemented here. Honestly, I wish we did away with the electoral college as well. It served it's purpose long ago before instant communication, but now we can operate on an actual democratic vote.

Every time I see a political ad for either party I end up liking that party a lot less. Luckily, I don't have T.V. right now either, so I only have to see the ads featured on Daily Show/Colbert on Hulu:)

I'm with you on the electoral college - RC

It's bothersome to me that it doesn't *really* matter if I vote, because my state has already decided. It happens to work in my favor (I agree with my state), but it still nags at me.

Medicare End Of Life SpendingDec 11, 2012
Original thread is getting pretty far down and I am curious because I have yet to hear a politican other than Mitch Daniels bring up this issue without screaming about killing grandma or using death panels.  When Medicare spends 25% of it's resources on end of life treatment then it's time for everyone to discuss this issue in a reasonable fashion.  Personally, and as one who is on Medicare, I feel that everyone who applies should have to include their advanced directives whi ...

Government Spending And False Claims.Mar 14, 2012
There is an official spreadshet of government spending at http://www.fms.treas.gov/mts/MTS.xls.  This should be examined before making false claims such as those that come from the right-wing echo chamber of late.  This spreadsheet shows that George H.W. Bush spent over $19 trillion during his 2 terms.  So far, Obama has spent $1.2 trillion.  Hmmmm.....  If we take the record back to 1980, the federal government has expended more than $45 trillion.  Hhhmmmm.&nb ...

The House Passed The Spending BillMar 06, 2013
Republicans passed it. Democrats were against it because it still included the $85 billion sequester dollars.  "The Senate isn't going to accept this bill," Senate Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said during debate.  Despite Democratic complaints, the House passed the bill easily in a 267-151 vote in which 53 Democrats supported it, likely because it will help avoid a government shutdown. Just 14 Republicans voted against it. Dems wanted Sequester, now they don't! ...

Defense Budget Loaded With Irrelevant SpendingDec 31, 2009
