Rebranding Obamacare

Posted: Dec 12, 2013

Apparently due to the newly discovered popularity of Obamacare, word has been sent out from republican command central to now call Obamacare "the ACA".  Afterall, history will credit a program called Obamacare to, of course, Obama.   They would not want Obama being thought of as the creator of Obamacare, much like we often do not think of Social Security as Roosevelt's Social Security.

It will be interesting how the republican party will have to convolute itself to try to change their image and actually win an election.  Of note lately, Paul Ryan is trying to be seen as a compromiser in the new budget proposal.  Recently, the republicans held some sort of event that was designed to bring in minority voters.  I guess the minorities did not get the invitation, as it turned out to be just a room full of white folk.  Apparently, the republicans even have a new instructional manual on how to talk to women.  This is going to be highly entertaining.

It will be interesting to see Fox News follows this directive. - Hmm

The shutdown lies squarely on the shoulders of TP Reps. - Not Obama

Obamacare is law as deemed by Congress and the SCOTUS.

TP threatened to shutdown gov by making unrealistic changes/repealing the law of the land. Impossible goal and they knew it and even admitted it right before the shutdown was to end. All at the expense of Americans.

Common sense is finally taking hold of the Republican Party very openly and publicly.

And the "Obama's way or the highway" accusations are murmurs lost in the wind.

The American people/Gov shutdown were held hostage with Obamacare defunding as the ransom.

Which was as well received as it would be if a left wing faction of a majority House Democratic Party decided they didn't want to fund the US Military and the government came to a screeching halt because of it.

"newly discovered popularity of Obamacare" - What planet are you living on?

[ In Reply To ..]
You must be watching only MSNBC because every other news media, newspaper and magazine is talking about the disaster that it is and will become.....even those who have signed up for health insurance through the ACA have no idea if they actually have it. Those that have paid for the health insurance through the ACA won't know until they go to their doctor if they actually have coverage for their health care and prescriptions. Those who created the website can't guarantee that the personal information on the web site can't be hacked.....oh, and only $300,000,000 of our tax dollars SO FAR has gone to implementing the ACA. *yes, that's three-hundred-million- dollars....count the zeros.

It seems that local news - Opie

[ In Reply To ..]
My local news does not have to fill up sound/print 24/7. I would say our newspaper is quite conservative, having endorsed Republican candidates forever. This same local newspaper has run several articles about the good things happening with Obamacare. I am hearing of people accessing the system and getting policies for $200 less per month.

I see that you must have gotten the memo regarding calling Obamacare the ACA.

Did you note the 2 news items I noted today? One was Boehner calling big hot shot conservative organizations "ridiculous". The second regarding Ryan being surprised he is being attacked by the TP.

"Newly discovered popularity"????? - Your post has racist tones in it too

[ In Reply To ..]
Is that your opinion? If not who is calling it a "newly discovered *popularity*". Whoever they are I'd advise you to seek another news source.

It's neither "newly discovered", nor is it "popular". In the news (no not MSNBC, FOX, CNN or the main stream ones), the news of this disaster is getting worse and worse. More and more people are finding out about this and it is no where near popular. The young workers are finding out they are the ones who are going to be carrying most of the burden and they are not happy. Each day more and more people are discussing and expressing this is not a system they wish to be part of. Obama is losing popularity with not just "old rich white guys". He's losing popularity with the younger ones (the ones who were disillusioned and voted for him and are now expressing they would like him to be recalled). He's losing his base in the Hispanic community and even the black community. The country is realizing each day that he and congress lied about this the whole time.

Oh believe me, we want Obama's name right there on this disaster of a plan so everyone will remember who unleashed this he!! upon the country. However, we also know that it was not Obama that came up with this. It was the insurance companies and Emanuel (aka Dr. Death). I do feel bad for Obama in a way. If he was that naive to think he could get away with it and everyone would swoon, adore and faint at the mere mention of his name, well on second thought I don't feel bad if he thought that.

I believe the republican party will have no problems come election time. Especially in light of this and the govt shutdown the democrat were the cause of.

What instruction manual? Please provide a link so the rest of us will know what you are talking about.

As for "some sort of event". It was a GOP Event for African-American Outreach. Two facts as to why there was not a large black turnout. 1. Detroit is not republican country, so of course not a huge turnout. Second it was held with Rand Paul, who we all know is not popular with the black community, so of course there would not be a large turnout of black people attending.

Instruction manual - sm

This was posted a while back:

5. WOMEN

Much was written after the 2012 election regarding the Republican Partyâs âwomenâ problem; these conclusions were based on both perception and data. Women are the majority of voters, making up
53 percent of the electorate in 2012. In 2012, President Obama won women by 11 points, whereas Governor Romney won married women by 11 points. However, it is important to note that 40 percent of female voters are single and that Obama won single women by a whopping 36 percent.

The RNC must improve its efforts to include female voters and promote women to leadership ranks within the committee. Additionally, when developing our Partyâs message, women need to be part of this process to represent some of the unique concerns that female voters may have.

There is growing unrest within the community of Republican women frustrated by the Partyâs negative image among women, and the women who participated in our listening sessions contributed many constructive ideas of ways to improve our brand with women throughout the country and grow the ranks of influential female voices in the Republican Party.

RECOMMENDATIONS

1. Communicating, organizing, and winning the womenâs vote should be part of all activities that the RNC undertakes. Women are not a âcoalition.â They represent more than half the voting population in the country, and our inability to win their votes is losing us elections. While the Co-Chair of the RNC should continue, as has been the case, to lead the effort to create and implement programs to connect with female voters and help female candidates, this effort should not be restricted to the Co-Chairâs office. It should be a mandate for all relevant departments in the building.

2. The RNC should implement training programs for messaging, communications, and recruiting that address the best ways to communicate with women. According to the liberal group Center for American Progress, the No. 2 issue for female voters this election
was âa candidate who will fight for them.â

Our candidates, spokespeople and staff need to use language that addresses concerns that are on womenâs minds in order to let them
know we are fighting for them.

3. The RNC should develop a surrogate list of women based upon areas of policy and political expertise. The media affairs team at the RNC should be focused on booking more women on TV on behalf of the party and be given metrics to ensure that we arenât just using the same
old talking heads. This list should not be limited to outstanding national surrogates such as Governors Nikki Haley and Susana Martinez, Senator Kelly Ayotte, and Congresswomen Cathy McMorris Rodgers and Marsha Blackburn (among many other excellent surrogates), but
should also include mayors, county officials, and state legislators.

4. Be conscious of developing a forward-leaning vision for voting Republican that appeals to women. The Republican Party needs to offer that same vision and message demonstrating that our policies, principles and vision address the concerns of female voters.

5. Republicans should develop a more aggressive response to Democrat rhetoric regarding a so-called âwar on women.â In 2012, the Republican response to this attack was muddled, and too often the attack went undefended altogether. We need to actively combat this, better
prepare our surrogates, and not stand idly by while the Democrats pigeonhole us using false attacks. There are plenty of liberal policies that negatively impact women, and it is incumbent
upon the party to expose those and relentlessly attack Democrats using that framework.

6. Republicans need to talk about people and families, not just numbers and statistics. Female voters want to hear the facts; many of them run the economies of their homes and understand economics better than the men in their families. But they are also the caregivers for their families. Women need to hear what our motive is â why it is that
we want to create a better future for our families and how our policies will affect the lives of their loved ones. Those are things that cannot be communicated well in graphs and charts â and we need to do a better job communicating why our policies are better, while using female spokespeople to do it.

7. The Republican Party committees need to understand that women need to be asked to run. Women are less likely to run for office on their own, and we should be encouraging and championing their desire to seek elective office. Additionally, the Republican Party must
recognize the unique challenges that female candidates face when running for office, as well as the unique opportunities female candidates provide in winning elections. The Party should
provide training programs for potential female candidates that includes fundraising guidance, digital strategy, etc.

8. Republicans need to make a better effort at listening to female voters, directing their policy proposals at what they learn from women, and communicating that they understand what a woman who is balancing many responsibilities is going through. Too often, female voters feel like no one listens to them. They feel like they are smart, engaged, and strong decision makers but that their opinions are often ignored. Many female voters feel that Washington, D.C., is a city full of politicians that simply donât listen and donât understand what their daily lives are like. Female candidates are far better at connecting with these voters because they are more likely to understand them.

9. The RNC should reevaluate the committee member process to help incentivize more women in leadership roles rather than solely in the âcommitteewomanâ slot.

10. The RNC should use Womenâs History Month as an opportunity to remind voters of the Republicanâs Party historical role in advancing the womenâs rights movement. "

It's actually kind of a funny read-- I mean, at least they KNOW they have a problem.

Thanks for the link - Poster you replied to

[ In Reply To ..]
I will be reading it in detail after work. Glancing through it right now though it's not a "new instructional manual on how to talk to women".

It was written last year. The RNC Chairman announced the Growth and Opportunity Project. It was to make recommendations and come up with a plan to grow the party and improve campaigns. Their job was to review the 2012 election. I do believe when any party loses something similar is done for that party, so there is nothing really "new" about that idea.

Lots of information to read, but this is in no way an "instruction manual on how to talk to women". It encompasses so much more.

Thanks again for the link.

Don't forget the "binders full of women." LOL! (NM) - Libby

I have to wonder - NK

[ In Reply To ..]
If it was, indeed, "a GOP Event for African-American Outreach," I have to wonder why they would choose Detroit, which, according to you, "is not republican country," and invite Rand Paul, who, according to you, "we" all know is not popular with the black community. Do you think that might have defeated the purpose of an African American outreach program? Hmmm. Back to the drawing board.

Well I don't think any of us will know why - Poster you replied to

[ In Reply To ..]
Who knows why anyone holds anything anywhere anymore. I think it was poor planning. They should have known that they would now get a great turnout.

And yes that is according to me, but you would have to agree wouldn't you that Rand Paul is not popular with the black community? I don't think he's really popular with anyone right now. I think they could have chosen a better person, but that's just me.

I still have no doubts that republicans will pull through and by election time will come up with a good candidate. Right now any candidate would be better.
I wouldn't presume to - NK

speak for the black community. Or for anyone but myself for that matter. I am interested, however, in what location and what Republican you would suggest for the next African American outreach. Frankly, I can't think of one.
Correct. The logical way to get from point A to point B would - be
[ In Reply To ..]
to traverse on foot.

IOW, actions speak louder than words. They just can't show up anywhere with anyone and expect credibility in the African American community. Same thing for the Hispanic and female voters. Past history precludes any spontaneous on-site outreach at this point.

However, point A to point B may be an arduous and infinite journey for the Republicans at this point.
Well I can - Poster you replied to

Since I have a mixture of different races in my family, I understand what our needs/wants are.

I understand why you would not think of one person in the republican party who would be a good candidate to reach out to the black community. I could name at least a half dozen republican candidates that my family and friends respect that we believe would be good and represent us and our needs. As for the location, I would have to give that some thought.
Please do name them - NK

Allen West, Condoleeza Rice, Frances Rice, Alveda C. King, Tim Scott, Mia Love

Those are just a few. It's 1:00 a.m. and too tired right now to go any further with this, but those are just the ones off the top of my head.
Interesting choices - NK
[ In Reply To ..]
Since they're all African American, may I ask if you think African Americans have a better chance at attracting minorities to the Republican party? At least three on your list are very far right, and I'd be interested in why you think their views would be popular with the African American community.

As the other poster suggested, I would think moderates like Michael Steele and the Huntsman family would have a better chance. I do think, however, that their points of view are out of step with the current Republican party, especially the far right of the party, so their services probably wouldn't even be considered.
I thought you only wanted African American names - Poster you replied to

Obamacare will NEVER be popular, as stated in the first post, is a prediction, not a truth.

I think it will be highly popular in the years to come. I think it is very popular now for many people. It is true that it is popular now for many people. It is true that it is not popular for many people. I think it will be highly popular in the years to come is an opinion and a prediction, not the truth, although it is my opinion it will become the truth.
