Here's a thought about Obamacare.

A lot of long-time MTs are middle-aged. A lot of MTs would love to leave their MTSO jobs if they could find a better job in their community. A lot of job-seekers are discouraged because they get little or no response on job apps with other employers. A lot of age discrimination can happen discreetly, by either noting your "25 years" of experience at your last job (if not just by looking at you if you DO get called for an interview).
I've been told that one reason employers might not totally keen on hiring older workers is because of the adverse effect that adding older employees could possibly have on their company's health insurance premiums. If that's the case, having insurance pools that Americans could use to get on their own, more-affordable insurance plan could relieve employers of the burden of adding higher-risk employees to their plan. I know some people need to get a job just so they can get on that group insurance plan.
I wonder if this could be one reason for more of us to support Obamacare. After all, a lot of us MTs probably are or will be looking to get hired elsewhere one of these days. Lord knows we don't need any additional roadblocks to limit our job options.

[ In Reply To ..]FYI, seniors are WAY beyond "expecting" more pay, ESPECIALLY MTs. I've even made my intent NOT TO SIGN UP FOR HC BENEFITS (which puts me in the position to stay in means-tested subsidized county system until MC kicks in) part of my interview spiel. So far, that has made not one bit of difference in terms of achieving a job search success story.
When patently discriminatory ads include the "only currently employed need apply" qualifier, it certainly is not much of a leap to conclude that age discrimination is rampant in today's economy.
Age discrimination is and has always been with us. At least - under genuine healthcare reform

BTW, I pay for my own care out of my own pocket, lousy as it is, and a big, big plus to Obamacare is that the free ride will be over. I have friends I go antiquing with (just incidentally both conservatives) who just go to the ER rather than buy insurance. I'll say here what I don't tell them, because they mostly do without and are not doing well under their "system"--that everyone who can should pay in to take out. Under Obamacare, the way it should be is the way it will be.

As it is, insurance has become such an enormous cost for employers that they have no choice but to consider it in hiring, and firing, decisions. And don't think for a minute that, when renewal time comes and a company is shocked at a rate increase, the salesman won't slip it a few names of people who are running up costs for both companies. Illegal, but of course it happens.
And it's not just a problem for older people. My supervisor told me a standard family-care plan cost the company over $25K per employee this year (the employee pays the rest of the premium). Not a good time to be an MT looking to cover more than just herself.
Healthcare reform isn't happening as some evil liberal plot. We are in the middle of a national economic crisis.

With an aging population, an explosion of self-induced diseases, and technology always providing wonderful new treatments, it would be foolish to think there will never be rate increases. What we can make sure of is that they are used to fight our cancers instead of paneling private jets.
The Affordable Care Act now prohibits all insurance companies from raising rates without accountability and requires them to justify and document all rate increases. It also, extremely importantly, sets a limit on the profits business can exploit from the fact that most of us will give everything we have, including literally the clothes off our backs, to keep ourselves or a loved one alive.

I think a lot of MTs are married and depend on their husbands for health insurance coverage, having no clue what's going on in the real world because husband probably belongs to a large group with cheaper plans.
