Question For The Moderators

Posted: Nov 26, 2012

What happened to the post that discussed the use of monikers? It was an interesting post, and one I enjoyed participating in. I hope we are not resuming the practice of deleting posts due to individual complaints, as this would be more than disappointing.;

The email they sent me as the OP - grits

[ In Reply To ..]
said it was deleted as it had nothing to do with politics. Which is true; it was more to do with the regulars on this board.

I appreciate everybody's input on it.

thanks, grits - arroz

You are a kind and circumspect poster in the face of some pretty snappy, unprecedented moderating. I appreciated the relevance of your post to the politics board. I guess someone else did not. Interestingly, your post was not moved to another board, and instead was summarily deleted.

I appreciate that - grits

[ In Reply To ..]
I appreciate all the kindness shown to me today; I wish I had been swift enough to screen-shot the lovely things you all said. It made my day. :)

I doubt it would be a problem for you to post - it on the gab board

[ In Reply To ..]
just to continue the conversation. I didn't even see it, so I have no idea what all the fuss is.

indeed... - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
one would wonder why the post wasn't just moved to another board. Oh well. Guess we'll never know.

I emailed and asked if that was okay. - grits

[ In Reply To ..]
I've been on forums in the past where restarting deleted threads was a banning offense, so I wanted to clear it first.
...aaaand it's up, reworded slightly :) - grits
[ In Reply To ..]
Thanks, mod!

Post was removed, as below poster stated, - Moderator

[ In Reply To ..]
because it was not relevant to politics. Everyone can pick and choose what monikers they use or choose not to use one - to discuss this choice is really not part of the politics board. The reason it was deleted and not moved to another board was the following posts that were nothing but insults.

my post, for one, was not an insult - tsk tsk

[ In Reply To ..]
if the post was not relevant to politics, you could have moved it to "gab". Shame on you.

Maybe your post wasn't, but there were a lot of nasty posts - on that thread. (nm)

[ In Reply To ..]
*
then the nasty posts could have been deleted... - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
the entire thread didn't need to go. Obviously, someone complained and the moderators rolled over and played dead.
Actually, I had suggested a weedwhacker approach to nastiness, - rather than pulling individual weeds, to clear
[ In Reply To ..]
screen space for more profitable posts and save Ms. Moderator significant time trying to pick and choose words to delete. For better or worse, if that were a regular approach we'd all recognize threads in danger of summarily disappearing and not invest a lot of time on them.

Also, we'd be less likely to take it personally as it'd be bad conversations that lost whole sections or were deleted in toto, not judgement calls on whose thoughts were worthy and whose were not. :)

That said, I thought the reaction to the idea was very informative and thus unexpectedly worthwhile. I hadn't seen it as an attack on basic personal freedoms.

Question about insults - bootstraps

[ In Reply To ..]
I understand why you deleted the thread and understand that it is no ones place to question anything about how the board is run.

But are you the same person who was moderating before the election? Because there were insults at every turn and threads that I knew would be deleted next time I cam back, but they weren't. Some almost begging for the monitor to intervene.

I am asking just out of curiosity because I figured monitoring would be at its strongest before the election, but to me it didn't seem that way.

Not complaining. Just curious. I appreciate having a place to talk :-)

I took over as moderator about three days before the election. - Moderator

[ In Reply To ..]
And yes, there were some posts and threads that I missed, but I don't do this every day and with as busy as this board is, there will be some posts that may slip past. I'm doing my best to make sure everyone shares your appreciation for having a place to talk. I'm also asking for the help of those on the board - if you feel a post is insulting, etc., report it. That's not that I will roll over and play dead, but I will use the rules of the board to make a judgement call.
you just can't cater to everyone who reports a thread - nm
[ In Reply To ..]
She didn't say she would - she said she'd - use the rules to make a judgment.
[ In Reply To ..]
You can't expect one person to keep track of everything on this board - it moves really fast! Plus the fact that moderators aren't paid (at least not in my experience) and I'm sure she has a job in addition to this. I'm sure if we could all stop sniping at each other, the moderator would have an easier time and no one would have their feelings hurt by having a post deleted.
I realize that; I simply offer a timely caveat - nm
[ In Reply To ..]
Thanks for your reply - bootstraps
[ In Reply To ..]
I know what you do is not easy, which is why I wouldn't email asking for a post to be removed if I felt I was being insulted. I understand the motivation of insulting posts and I actually would prefer they not be deleted. It just shows lack of information and no where else to go.

Of course some cross any line of civility.

(I assume you know I wasn't the one who said you rolled over.)

I think I understand the monitoring consistency factor a little better now. Again, appreciate your reply and for providing this forum.

I don't blame you for deleting the whole thing. - RC
[ In Reply To ..]
Sometimes a thread gets so mucked up, there is no resuscitating it.

I find - it

[ In Reply To ..]
funny that this post was about a post that was removed from this board because it was not political, yet this whole post is not political.

the post is about moderation, not politics - nm

When The Moderators Are Out To Get YouJan 12, 2015
I've made a few posts on MTStars, and replied to many also.  Like everyone, my responses aren't always liked by all and, admittedly, there are times when I've gone over a line and said exactly what I feel and didn't really consider another person's feelings to what I've said.  I'm not the only one.  I've seen many do the exact same thing.  I've seen arguments regarding opinions on subjects turn into namecalling. Recently, I&# ...

Oh Please ModeratorsNov 12, 2015
Oh please moderators, separate these two political factions, republicans from democrats into two different boards. I see not many conservatives are coming here to express themselves because of the constant flack and hateful comments that the left lobs at anyone differing in opinion. Some of us would like to compare the many, many candidates for president on the republican side. I for one am sick of all this nonsense. I don't much like to listen to ramblings and hateful comments blasting ...

I am making a blueberry pie to take to my stepfather tomorrow, and I thought it would like nice to use a cookie cutter in the shape of a bell and apply that piece of crust to the top of the pie.   If I use a little bit of water to attach it, will it bake to the top crust securely?  A lot of you sound like you are pretty handy in the kitchen!   The lemon sponge pie I made for Thanksgiving was wonderful.  Thanks to the person who suggested the allrecipes.com webs ...

I'm always facinated at some people who think all social problems and situations are so black and white.Abortion is here to stay, whether it's legal or not, just like it's always been an option when a woman finds herself facing the impossible situation of an unwanted pregnancy. Wishing it wasn't an option has never worked. However, when a discussion comes up about abortion, we women are strictly divided. Black and White in our opinions. This is a complicated issue. It doesn ...

Cat Question Aug 05, 2011
Don't know if you remember my last posts awhile back about a stray cat we started feeding and took care, gave her shelter for the winter and she had kittens.  We've taken the kittens in and adore them all.  Now...here she is 3 or 4 months later, every once in awhile I'll get a glimpse of her nursing them.  Vet told us milk has to be dried up before they can fix her.  However, she is a stray and she has been going out walking around the neighborhood like she has ...

QuestionMar 22, 2010
Okay, here is a question that I have not seen come up here.  While watching news today this just crossed my mind.  If the government sets an insurance rate you have to pay based upon what you make per year, do they take into account all your other bills, and that sometimes as ICs we don't get any work coming in at times, and then what they set is more than what you can afford (i.e. more money than your paycheck and you still have to pay all your bills).  As ICs I'm sure ...

So, yesterday, beautiful day, I decide to lay out in the sun.  I park m ...

E-Bay QuestionNov 19, 2013
Hi everyone, I absolutely love Swarovski Crystal, in particular their earrings. I have a couple of pairs that I paid full price for, but they are too expensive. (Earrings run from $60-$300+.) I saw that E-Bay has a really nice selection, and you can just do a Buy Now for way under market price--I'm not into the bidding thing, BTW. Thing is, how do I REALLY know it's Swarovski? Some of their jewelry is signed, and some of those posts say so, but not all their jewelry is signed ...
