Obama's Border Plan Looks Similar to Bush's

Posted: May 26, 2010

Another time O is mimicking something Bush did. For how much he speaks against Bush, it's unbelieveable that he is implementing things Bush did. Bush haters should be really upset over this.

PHOENIX – President Barack Obama's plan to send as many as 1,200 National Guard troops to the US-Mexico border appears to be a scaled-down version of the border security approach championed by his predecessor.

The 6,000 troops who were sent by President George W. Bush to the border from June 2006 to July 2008 were generally credited within law enforcement circles as having helped improve border security, but restrictions placed on the soldiers were denounced by advocates for tougher enforcement who are now leveling similar objections at Obama's plan.

Some law enforcement officials along the border said they worry that Obama will repeat Bush's mistake by limiting the troops to support roles, such as conducting surveillance and installing lighting, rather than letting them make arrests and confront smugglers. They also believe the scale of the force — one-fifth of the size of the one sent by Bush — is too small to make a difference along the length of the 2,000-mile border.

Cochise County Sheriff Larry Dever, whose jurisdiction includes about 80 miles of the Arizona-Mexico border, said 1,200 soldiers might make a difference in a smaller portion of the border. "But if you spread it across the border, it's like spitting into the wind," Dever said.

Under the Obama plan, the troops will work on intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance support, analysis and training, and support efforts to block drug trafficking. They will temporarily supplement border patrol agents until Customs and Border Protection can recruit and train additional officers and agents to serve on the border. Obama also will request $500 million for border protection and law enforcement activities.

So what this article says is that they are afraid that Obama will screw up as bad as Bush did, right? LOL

Short of pulling all our troops out of the middle east, putting them immediately on the border and ordering them to fire on site of an illegal, they ain't never gonna stop it.

We created the economy that brings them here by assuming that our people were too good to work at the menial jobs, now we're crying about it.

Ah, remember the Alamo?

well - done

Do you remember San Jacinto?

You sound like a card-carrying member of the blame America for all her ills crowd. Think maybe Mexico creating an economy where it is impossible to make a living in their own country might have contributed to this at all?

What created the idea that people were too good to work at menial jobs WAS created by the liberal side of our government whose bright idea it was to make a welfare check a better deal than a "menial" job. If they had tied those welfare checks to some of those "menial" jobs perhaps we would not have this issue. You think?

I think it is time for Americans to stop blaming America for all the problems and start developing a sense of individual responsibility again. What a concept!!

Have a great day.

I actually agree with most of what you wrote. I do not blame our country for this. How about industries who refuse to pay acceptable wages, bring on the illegals! Specifically the agricultural and domestic industries, not to mention rich folk who need nannys, gardners, maids, etc.

When I was a teen I worked two summers picking beans and strawberries for peanuts, something you'd have to hold a gun to an adult American to do I'm sure. Then I worked as a maid in a hotel - the dirt in the fields was better than the dirt left behind by humans, but hey, I was making 75 cents an hour and I managed to buy my first $200 car!

Somewhere, I think after moms were forced to go back to work, kids began to feel entitled (guilt on parents behalf?) I stayed home with my kids, I was lucky to have a DH. We didn't have much, but I was there. The kids had to get jobs if they wanted the extras in life. Now I see my grandkids acting like litte princesses with their I-Pods, cell phones, etc., and it makes me angry that they feel entitled to these luxuries.

Yes Mexico needs to do something. The Catholic church needs to back off on their stupid birth control ban, etc, etc. We can blame anything we want. I feel it's too big to stop, and the Mexicans aren't our only immigration problems.

Y'all have a good day too.

I do believe it.... - sam

I still feel that welfare check should not be a freebie. I do not mind giving someone a hand up, but I think that someone should be willing to to be a gardener, clean up public parks, pick up trash on roadways, or any other job that illegals are doing.

I also think that companies and/or private citizens who knowingly employ illegals should pay stiff pines and/or do jail time.

I realize Mexicans are not the only problem, but that Mexican border is a huge one. It is not only Mexicans coming across that border that worry me.

Thanks for your post!

Those are the wages I worked for and that was in sales in department stores.

I did hear that the workers now make around $10/hour. I can't verify it or tell you where I heard it, but if it's true, well, gee, those aren't bad wages. That's top rate for most jobs in my area -- and that's why everyone travels 30 or more miles to work.

Great post, Alamo - sam! - vicky

"Mexican President Calderon was right.
Those 1,200 National Guard troops who are being sent to the border⦠Will not be used to curb illegal immigration.
The AFP reported:

US National Guard troops being sent to the Mexican border will be used to stem the flow of guns and drugs across the frontier and not to enforce US immigration laws, the State Department said Wednesday.

The clarification came after the Mexican government urged Washington not to use the additional troops to go after illegal immigrants.

President Barack Obama on Tuesday authorized the deployment of up to 1,200 additional troops to border areas but State Department spokesman Philip Crowley told reporters, âItâs not about immigration.â

He said the move was âfully consistent with our efforts to do our part to stem, you know, violence, to interdict the flow of dangerous people and dangerous goods â drugs, guns, people.â

He said the extra troops would be used to free up civilians engaged in support functions so that law enforcement personnel can be increased along the 2,000-mile-long (3,200 kilometer) border.

Nearly 13 million Mexicans live in the United States, more than half of them illegally.

âWe have explained the presidentâs announcement to the government of Mexico, and they fully understand the rationale behind it,â Crowley said.

Oh⦠And, the National Guard troops will not be armed."

This is too little too late (sending troops to the border).... - sam

...because of news about to break that several hundred Somalis have been brought across the Mexican border (with terrorist ties) who are now happily scattered throughout the good old US of A...sleeper cells sound familiar? DHS gave a heads up to Houston that they should be on the lookout. So, when these folks get together and blow something up or try to, Obama is going to say hey, I sent troops to the border.

Too little...too late.

Didn't hear that but you're probably right. Otherwise - Backwards Typist

why did he do an about face all of a sudden after fighting against sending troops to the border?

Or is it because that's what he's best at doing? I'm really getting disgusted with the government.
