Mother-in-law spent 2 months in Cyprus visiting

Posted: Nov 1, 2013

My mother-in-law was born and raised in Cyprus.  She came to the United States 58 years ago and is a United States citizen.  For years she has visited Cyprus and they were known to an average country.  My MIL was known as rich when she visited and she would help them out.  Her family showed respect to the United States and thought it was wonderful to live in the United States.  The last time my MIL visited her family was 6 years ago.

She just got back from her trip.  Cyprus is an Island near Greece, Syria, Israel and part of Cyprus is owned by Turkey.  My MIL native language is Greek.  Her family has changed and so has my MIL.  My MIL was known now as poor and watching her money.  Her family is now rich and they drink more than ever, eat out all the time and have gained weight and are just fat people.  They are mean and self-absorbed and wave their money around.  All the cousins, nephews mocked United States.  They think we are joke and United States lost all respect in that region.  In fact, that whole area mocks United States and quite frankly, HATES AMERICANS.  They think we are joke and do not know what we are doing and the citizens are stupid while letting the government run citizens.  Cyprus and that region want nothing to do with Americans.  My MIL got in a physical fight with her sister over it and now my MIL will probably never talk to her relatives again, because there is nothing to say and MIL could not wait to get back home to the USA.  She vowed she will never visit her home life in Cyprus again for being attacked by not even the citizens, but her own family.

There has been a complete switch around, financially and respect wise in that part of the region and want to see United States fall down on their hands and knees.  That region is waiting for another country to take over the United States and be the power play in the world.  United States is officially out in their eyes.

No surprise, but I'm sorry about your MIL and family. Hopefully - the next generation will mend it.

For those who are offended that not everyone respects us, again, it's not enough for a people to just brand themselves as "great." Their behavior has to be great, and we ourselves have become rather fat and mean and self-absorbed, too often thinking we can somehow both destroy the achievements of our fathers and just coast along on them too. FT

Sorry to hear her experience - not surprised

[ In Reply To ..]
I am sorry for her experience, I know that has to be the most hurtful experience for someone. But what should we as Americans expect? Our government sticks their nose in everyone's business they have no business in. How can a government tell another government how to treat their people or what they can and cannot do when the US can't take care of their own. Our government and country is falling apart but yet we are still sticking our nose where it does not belong.

There has always been hatred for Americans for the way we live but I don't think it has ever been this bad. They don't believe in the way we live our lives, so why do we continue to stick our nose in their business? We can't even fix our own problems or take care of our own people let alone fix other countries problems. No one comes to the aid of the Americans and probably never will, but we have to try to fix everything for people that don't really want our help or hate us.

America government is America a huge target.

why the dislike for this. This was a first hand experience. - are you kidding

[ In Reply To ..]
Love to hear the reason for the dislike here.

Actually, no, it was secondhand - not first hand

[ In Reply To ..]
First-hand would be if the poster herself had experienced it. She's repeating what her MIL said, therefore it's second hand.

Alot of countries hate America because of Obama you know. Our allies don't trust us too much anymore because they can see what he is up to.

There are so many evil things going on right now, from the death panel philosophy of Ezekiel Emanuel to the evil religion of extremist Muslims. It is closing in on us here in the US, and all the republicans are worried about is who is responsible for the stupid O-Care Website not working. They should be pointing out to America that it's not constitutional and its time to impeach the Obama. And we can try to regain some trust and respect in the world with a president who has morals.

Please define "not constitutional" - because

[ In Reply To ..]
In the USA the SCOTUS is charged with determining what is and what is not constitutional. They did rule the ACA constitutional and the law of the land. Whether or not we agree with rulings, this is the way our system of government is set up and what makes us a civilized nation.

I disagreed with the Bush V Gore ruling, but my sadness and disdain with the ruling did nothing to change what followed (see link) and Americans were *lawfully* stuck with it. I don't think anything under the ACA rises to the destruction, illegality, and unethical nature of a war bestowed upon us by the Bush administration.

You may *think* the ACA is not constitutional, but it is as per the SCOTUS. To reject that notion is to reject the foundation on which our country is built.

Did her family ever care about her and did they really love America or where they just happy for the handout? And now they don't need the handout and therefore don't need or want your mother?? They don't sound like nice people to me.

Family loved my MIL. Cyprus used to love - America.

[ In Reply To ..]
For years, my MIL's family raved on how they had a family member living in the United States. It was such a big deal. My MIL visits her family every 4-6 years. It costs a lot of money to visit, around $5,000 each trip to Cyprus and that is a lot for a retired, single, old lady.

Cyprus NEVER received a HANDOUT from United States. Cyprus is an island and the culture and customs are pretty much the same as Greece and people speak Greek. Then Turkey saw how the island had wealth and many Turks moved on the island and took over about half of it. Cyprus is a prestige island and there used to a be an American Military base on that island.

Just a few months ago, Cyprus had a problem with their banking system and the blame was targeted to America.

The people think Obama is a weak president. He says one thing, but does not mean it. The people think citizens of America are stupid and hold no clout. Cypriots are very angry with the United States and the language that comes out of their mouths about USA citizens are so bad that my MIL had to leave the room because she could not take it anymore and just cried and wanted to leave. My MIL knew this was her last time visiting her home country again.

Just to think that I was going to allow my son to visit Cyprus with his grandma and meet his relatives for the first time for a visit of 3 weeks. My GOSH what that would have done to him mentally for the rest of his life listening to his relatives cut down the USA and how we are pretty much trash in their eyes.

United States is not powerful anymore in the last few years and other countries are trying to look toward someone who is more powerful in the world.

That's odd. Cyprus economy is still in a tailspin - 6 months after its EU bailout

[ In Reply To ..]
it being one of the European nations that went belly-up like Greece, Ireland, Portugal and Spain. Cyprus banking-based economy took a real haircut after the Greece debt crisis and as a result, their economy was downgraded to "junk status" 2012-2013 by Moody's, Fitch and S&P...as low as a country can go in the downgrade bingo game with the Big Three all in subterranean alignment....after its debt essentially consumed its entire GDP while uninsured depositors had their funds frozen until banks could be recapitalized with bailout funds not released until Summer 2013. That was a 10-billion Euro rescue, a huge amount for a country of 1.1 million population. The cash-flow freeze was only about 4 months ago.

Meanwhile, as a result of bailout and unprecedented austerity measures unemployment rose by 40% over the past year (15% in the second quarter alone) and working Cypriots took 20%-30% pay cuts. It's interesting you should bring up the eating and drinking thing and how your relatives are getting "fat," since the folks in the second linked article said exactly the opposite, that "frugal get-togethers" had replaced their nights out at the bars and that the job situation is so bad that many are trying to leave the country. Makes me wonder if their obesity is more attributable to having to eat cheaper more unhealthy high-carb foods than resulting from land-of-plenty feasting with wild abandon....kinda like what happens to our own SNAP recipients who will be taking substantial cuts in benefits starting today. Less than $1.40 per meal stretches further with bread, rice, pasta and potatoes, doesn't it?

The Cypriot economy is expected to shrink by 13% over 2013 and 2014, according to the latest report by the European Commission. It's the only Eurozone state expected to see a decline in GDP in 2014. Many blame their own system, but their leaders blame US CAPITALISM (not specifically the current administration) for their woes, so it's not really all that surprising that Cypriot family may have been fired up over economic issues and just MIGHT have been covering up their own bleak situation during a visit from an American in-law, ya think?

My MIL took travlers checks with her. Once - she was there, could not use them.

[ In Reply To ..]
The country stopped taking travelers checks and we had to send her $500.00. She could put the travelers checks in a bank, but it would be on hold for over 30 days and then take out some of the interest for it. Many Cypriots were taking out money in the ATM machines because they knew the banks were going to crash. Americans even have money in hostage in the Cyprus banks.

In the last 5 years, the Cypriots have been getting rich, way more than the Americans. The family members have changed in my MIL's eyes and only care about themselves and are selfish and turned to greed. They completely cut down my MIL's clothes, her hairstyle, shoes.

My MIL family would have loved to visit the USA, but now instead, they love Canada a lot more and one cousin bought a place in Calvary for a summer home (because in some areas of Cyprus it is too hot in the summers) and most would pick Canada over United States.

To be honest, this whole story just seems to be a tale spun to grip about Obama... I am not buying it.

They love your MIL but treated her badly because they hate America? What did her clothes or hairstyle have to do with the economics of America? They prefer Canada? Fine, let them go to Canada.

And your son will learn that many countries hate America, nothing new about that.
Yes, my son may have to learn many countries - hate USA, but these are RELATIVES.
[ In Reply To ..]
These are his relatives. What does clothes and hair have to do with it? EXACTLY! Why! We can only figure out that they are self-absorbed and many became wealthy and feel the USA citizens have lost money and going downhill.

a month traveling around Europe (England, Italy, France, Spain and Portugal). It is true that the people in these countries are incredulous as they watch us from across the pond. Without exception, everyone I spoke to expressed that they could not believe that a small minority of wingnuts had such a strangle hold on all US legislation to the detriment of its citizens. Most sympathize with our president and think Obamacare is a step in the right direction and long overdue. They don't understand why health care for our people is such a big deal. I had some very interesting conversations.

Cyprus is in shambles. I guess mocking us - makes them feel better
