Oh, those good ole days of high school detention. Spent a lot of time there.

Posted: Feb 3, 2011

The post below made me think bad, and every time I do I laugh.  Now, I was not a bad kid but I spent more than my fair share of time in detention for the least little thing.  I would go to sleep in class and get detention.  Then I would go sleep in detention.

Our high school in Atlanta was grades 8-12, very large.  So you may have had 50 or more kids in detention.  Usually, the teacher monitoring detention did not even know you.  Sometimes I would have someone answer roll call for me in detention, or I would answer and then when the teacher was not looking I would leave.  Got caught for that one time too.

We could look at a teacher wrong and get detention.  So, I served my time many many days.  Never did anything serious enough to get suspended though, just had fun.

Always for skipping class. - Fun times. nm

Oh the good ole days for sure... - Patricia

I and my future husband got caught cutting class a few times. We always went to the lake but someone would always see us and back in those days (1969), there were detention officers who paroled the streets and would turn you in. Punishment was always an hour on the dreaded "blue couch" after school. Never did seem to hurt.

I only went to detention for one reason - Talked in class!

I was always talking in class. I never really understood why that was a problem, and I got straight A's. Years later when I became a scout leader and had to keep the attention of 30 little boys, and now as a hiking and backpacking instructor to adults, I totally get it! There are times I'd like to send some of the adults back to detention.

At times I got detention for things I did not do, but wanted to go. - Hung out with friends!! nm

I got suspended for chewing gum... - Kendra

[ In Reply To ..]
I was a straight A student and really was a good kid, but I did get suspended on time for chewing gum. The funny part was that although I did chew gum often and it was against the rules, I was not chewing gum on the day I got suspended for it. My dad took me out to lunch and then we went shopping.

The times have gone - 1mt

from getting suspended for chewing gum to getting suspended bringing a gun to school...or drugs. If only it were as simple as it was back then. Nowadays, kids are allowed to chew gum in school. Still, even back then that was a silly thing to get suspended for.

So true. It used to be... - see message

The only thing you ever heard of anyone being suspended for was fighting.

I am telling my age here, but in elementary school the boys brought guns to school during hunting season and kept them in their locker. It was okay.

Our principal was allowed to paddle unruly students (usually the boys). They got 1 hit across the backside with a board. (not so sure I agreed with that one though).

The girls were not allowed to wear slacks of any kind.

By the time I got to high school, our sister school actually had a smoking section outside for kids. (did not agree with that one either).

The things I got in trouble for constituted washing the black-board after school, and then later in high school - detention. They don't do these things anymore.

Chewing gum, talking in class, skipping class, etc. was all part of growing up. Now all of these normal things are treated like major crimes. Heck, my daughter skipped school on "senior-skip day," and was so scared of getting in major trouble that she turned herself in and went in to school!!!! I do understand the concerns with drugs and weapons at school nowadays though. It is so sad how we have come to this.
My high school too had a - 1mt

smoking area out the rear doors where kids could go to smoke during their lunch hour. They certainly don't have that now.

I hate to say it, but I was a goody-two shoes! One time I had to stay after school because I was in a study period (got released from Gym class due to hip surgery). The guy in charge of study hall was also the guy who monitored detention. Anyway, one gal across from me kept talking and goofing around. I asked her several times to be quiet. She reached across the table and slapped my arm in fun, resulting in a loud cracking noise. Guess who got detention? I think this is called guilt by association!!

My 18yo Son Wants To Drop Out Of High School And Get His GED.Mar 10, 2011
I understand why he wants to drop out.  He and his girlfriend of nearly three years broke over the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays.  Basically, he found out that she had slept with two of his supposed good friends and also tried to get with a third.  I'm not sure why she did this as my son treated her like gold.  He followed her around like a little puppy.  Did everything she told him to do.  He all but stopped attending family functions because she wa ...

My 40th High School ReunionMar 26, 2012
I haven't been back to a reunion since my 10th one. Now, I'm debating whether to go because so many of my classmates are successful, two published authors, military officers, doctors, lawyers.  Very small graduating class.  Many of them have taken early retirement, live on Hilton Head, SC, etc. I don't want to tell them my pay has been cut in half and I work for an Indian company. Is that pathetic? I would also add that I was the geeky, awkward, nose-in-a-book, dateless, ...

WASHINGTON—Senate Republicans' ban on earmarks -- money included in a bill by a lawmaker to benefit a home-state project or interest -- was short-lived. Only three days after GOP senators and senators-elect renounced earmarks, Arizona Sen. Kyl slipped the measure into a larger bill sought by President Barack Obama and passed ...

Anita Hill/Clarence Thomas--the Good Ol' DaysOct 20, 2010
Wow!  Surprised this has come back from 1991.  My impression back then was that Anita Hill was very level-headed, was consistent and detailed with her story, even though the questioning went on and on and was quite brutal.   Even though I believe he exhibited disgusting behavior, he was still confirmed as a Supreme Court Judge.  What do you think would happen today if it was a similar situation? ...

Bush creating a constitutional right for Guantanamo Bay detainees to challenge their captivity," according to the SCOTUS blog ...
