McConnell: May I Have a Plausible Explanation From Those in Transcription?

Posted: Nov 6, 2014

As I mentioned yesterday (and from what I have read from others since my last visit), I, too, have become an independent because of the nonsense I have seen from both parties. That in no way means that I am for the abolition of parties, because I do believe one party often reins in the other, when the other goes "whack :) In fact, I believe we may need MORE parties for those of us who don't agree with the whole kit and caboodle of a single party. However, I think the problem today is that both parties need to go back to at least giving the outward appearance that they care about their party platform and debating the actual issues, rather than character assassinations, digging up dirt on one another, or finding a vulnerability they can capitalize on and hope these things will distract from the actual issues. In my mind, that's not exhibiting strong leadership, that's cheating, done by people can't otherwise win based their own merit or ability to debate the actual issues. Sure, "sweeping the leg" may work to win, like in the movie "Karate Kid", but didn't we all boo the guy who did it? So why is that suddenly "cool" rather than nasty? Which brings me to my question... As transcriptionists, we have watched our jobs be outsourced overseas repeatedly for the past 10 years, sometimes without warning, or lost our benefits in trying to compete. As American outsourced workers, now mostly ICs, making at most 12 an hour with no HR departments to mediate and virtually no regulation, our only recourse is to get an attorney if we're not paid or if something else goes wrong, which they know we can't afford. So they get away with it, and most of us who aren't nasty people will just take it, walk away, and move on. We all know this has gone on in this field for too long, now, so I truly want to understand how any transcriptionist could vote for or cheer on the re-election or a career politician like Mitch McConnell, a man who voted 3 times for tax breaks for companies who outsourced overseas and himself a government pay raise 6 times? Now I can understand how Obamacare is a concern, but at the same time, I also haven't had health insurance in 10 years in this business and I paid my taxes. I understand your immigration concerns, but that's not really a concern for our particular field, now is it? The problem in this field is outsourcing TO other countries. I also understand and agree Obama was not qualified for this job, not a strong enough leader, and that his ideas at turning the economy around were weak. However, the ads for Mitch McConnell in my state were originally melodramatic and laughable, written with the maturity of a 5th grader, until criticism came from his own party and he toned it down. Even afterwards, the only point his ads made were trying to tie Alison to Obama at every turn, literally calling her an "Obama Lover", although it was clear she didn't agree with him on every issue. (And we all know what "Obama lover" is a pseudonym for, ladies and gentleman, especially in a Southern state, and for those who say their hatred for Obama isn't about race, how do you explain THAT one?) In fact, his "Obama-lover witch hunt" became literally scary, here, like people with torches and pitchforks ready to run you out of town. Are we really going to penalize people for freedom of speech and vote now? This last month, he turned to some positive ads, yes, but for me it was too little too late, So I'd really like to know, and feel your fellow transcriptionists deserve, an honest answer from transcriptionists who are cheering this on: How DO you justify voting for/cheering on the re-election of a 30-year career politician who pushed for outsourcing of our work overseas, for his own government pay increase 6 times, and for lack of regulation in our field or provision of insurance for us? I refuse to believe it's simply because you were blinded by your hatred of Obama and/or bought the "Obama Lovers!" speech, there's got to be a better answer than that. So I'm looking for more rational explanations than that, if you please? Thanks :) ;

Many, especially in the south, are one-issue voters...sm - oldmt

and their votes are totally focused on pro-life candidates. Churches preach to their congregations that they should vote republican based on this one issue.

unfortunately true, along with gay marriage and guns - Kentuckian

[ In Reply To ..]
Yes, it's sorta like "I'm in the poorhouse, but thank God gays can't get married and we've outlawed abortion. But lemme keep my guns so I can shoot somebody, b'God."

;)

These are all petty distraction issues to justify you being robbed blind.

Now - having said that, I AM a strong supporter for upholding the second amendment, but I do believe we need stronger gun laws.

I believe you should have to have licensure with an age requirement like driving a car, with a minimum age of 18 and "learner's permit" for at least 2 years, first, under the instruction of a team of instructors, not just one; thereby, proving yourself responsible with a gun, having been trained well and having truly earned your license and right to bear arms - because let's face it, many died earning that right, but it actually a privilege that not every citizen has in every country - it was earned by the deaths of thousands of trained soldiers on our behalf.

This sort of "probationary learner's permit" would at least prevent 9-year-olds from accidently shooting their irresponsible instructors with an Uzi and still leave us with the right to bear arms and defend ourselves :)

Voting for the lesser of the 2 evils - ProMT

[ In Reply To ..]
I am not sure if there is a plausible answer. Just like my subject line states, a lot of Americans feel We, The People, have no representation any longer. As far as elections, someone has to win and someone has to lose. We just have to hold our nose and choose which candidate we like a tad better than their opponent. I believe a strong third political party might squelch the status quo, and I believe we are trending in that direction, but not as fast as some desire.

Ah, so you did respond directly; after you posted "looking for answers" above ;) - Kentuckian

[ In Reply To ..]
I appreciate that sentiment of picking the lesser or two evils, we can all relate to that.

I guess my question was meant for those actually cheering one of those "evils" on :)

I refuse to vote for the "lesser of 2 evils". Until - a viable independent runs, I plan

[ In Reply To ..]
to sit the rest of the elections out. Voting in this one was useless, because it'll just be more of the same. Two parties dividing America, each obstructing any progress the other might make, at all costs, regardless of how that obstruction hurts the country as a whole. The system is broken, and it needs to be rebuilt from the ground up. However, we said the same about the banking system, and Wall Street, and they just got bailed out. So by supporting either of these vile parties, we just continue to bail them out.

Sometimes... - NPC

[ In Reply To ..]
...it's a matter of believing in something bigger than oneself, i.e., America as a whole instead of medical transcription as a single entity. Maybe if the country gets back on track economically, the medical transcription field and other fields will get back on track as well.

Trickle-Down Theory only works locally; otherwise, spoken like national MTSO? - Kentuckian

[ In Reply To ..]
Although I could be wrong, it's happened before:)

I believe in "trickle-down theory", but only with local business.

As a matter of fact, until I entered transcription years ago (when I was young and could still change careers), I also was lucky to have a good experience with the companies I worked for, being rewarded for hard work. I could even politely ask a question or disagree with them and not lose my job or penalized for it.

However, with transcription, especially with national companies, it's a whole new world - ain't nothing trickling down on me other than fallout from the giant P-ing contests MTSOs have with each other over the best technology rather than investing in quality people to run it or manage the people who are running it.

In fact, the only people benefiting from our hard work were the owners and investors, and I hope they made a killing then, because they were also very short-sighted - because word gets around and technology is not yet at the point where it can run itself.

That's the second time you've accused me of being an MTSO. - NPC

[ In Reply To ..]
You are just looking for a fight and I'm not going to reward you.

I am not an MTSO. I am an MT. In answer to your other post, I do happen to have time on my hands today because the work is light.

With regard to your original post seeking "plausible explanations," I gave mine. You don't like it. Too bad. I am entitled to my opinion, as are you.

Now you go and have yourself a nice day, ok? I'm also done here.
Asked as a question, and I said "I might be wrong" - if I am, I apologize - Kentuckian
[ In Reply To ..]
Forgive me, but I have truly never heard, in all my years as a transcriptionist, any MT ever say they believe that when companies do better, we'll do better; at least since I was working in house - especially after companies have chosen to outsource overseas for cheaper labor.

You honestly believe that outsourcing to cheaper labor will result in better pay for us as Americans because the company itself is doing better?

Okay:)

Because even us who were initially cheerleaders for such companies, much longer than we should have been, don't believe that anymore.

So if you're not an MTSO, tell us all where you work as an MT, that you can still actually have that much faith in your company, I'd love to work there:)
She didn't accuse you, she just said it was - spoken "like" an MTSO.
[ In Reply To ..]
i.e.; What you said sounded like something an MTSO might say. She didn't say you WERE one.

If the country gets back on track economically, - we MTs still wont see a dime of it.

[ In Reply To ..]
Those at the top will just continue to pocket the extra profits.

My transcription pay fell 40% under BO. - His policies stink.

[ In Reply To ..]
He and his criminal cronies are the reason the country is in the worst financial shape ever. Big business got away with a lot of things because BO and his pals turned away to focus on their own leftwing extremist agenda. The country would have been a lot better off financially if Romney had won. A recent poll of soured Obama fans even showed that they agreed that they would be better off if they would have voted for Romney. But, hey, we all know, they didn't. They voted for Obama AGAIN. So, moral of the story, we have the commie liberal criminal agenda coming out of Chicago to thank for our financial woes. The good news is that we have only 2 more years left of his very, very long 8-year Boy King reign.

Again, fallout from the 2004-2008 push to outsource - Kentuckian

[ In Reply To ..]
If you go back and trace when the larger transcription companies began to outsource to India, as I did, you'll see outsourcing began well before Obama was ever in office - 2004 to 2008 - he just didn't do jack squat about it.

And it wasn't just India and transcription - the automobile industry to Mexico and China, textiles to Malaysia and China - even your pet food has been outsourced to China (check the company websites - most sent to China beginning in 2007-2008) and there's no regulation at all in China as to what goes in American goods, which is why pets have gotten sick and recalls happen regularly.

China practically owns us, dear, and that did not begin with Obama - he just didn't end it - but I'm not sure anyone could, it may be too late - we are in so much debt to China now

I don't know how old you are or how long you have been an MT, but...sm - retired MT

[ In Reply To ..]
I retired in 2009 because in the prior nine years I went from making a very healthy $40,000 a year to struggling to make 25,000 in 2008. This also included working more hours due to NJA. Experienced MTs are now hired by this same company for 20% less then what newbies were hired for 10 years ago. Our pain began long before Obama was elected president.

that has nothing to do with Obama - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
It has to do with the unfair labor practices of the MTSOs.

Your pay fell 40% because Big Business, - (which pays off ALL politicians), was - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
allowed to start sending work offshore. And I believe that started happening under a Republican reign.
