Wouldn't it be great if this played out peacefully as a result of patience and communication. ... and of course Military USA in the ready.
Saddam Hussein might have taken the same peaceful option had he been given the chance.
I could be incorrect in my recollection (I'm kind of pressed for time and can't do a lot of citing), but during Clinton, Saddam kicked out UN inspectors. Then Bush Adm accused Saddam of mushroom cloud WMDs. I remember Saddam all but begging the inspectors to come back to prove he had none, when there was no doubt in his mind that America was about to pay him a very viiolent visit. Too bad Haliburton and a bunch of other muck (including assurances of a presidential legacy) was the true motivation for war and in turn prevented a conversation that could have saved a lot of sorrow, lives, and money.

More and more this reminds me of the First Gulf War and how nations around the planet stepped in to impose peace when Iraq invaded Kuwait and was headed for Egypt. President H.W. (the first one) had his name on the Gulf War settlement. This time it looks like Russia is being assigned credit for leading the way to peace after we waved the big stick. Russia deserves credit. It could have refused to join the international community and and backed Syria all the way.
I don't know how China would have gone in that case as it was only officially, but coolly even then, supporting Syria, but now these two huge, official allies of Syria are unofficially working with us and others to stop use of chemical weapons.
Once again, the international community seems to be working together the way it should.
Just as First Gulf War coalition probably made this - one easier, this may lead to more

Note that international sanctions also caused Libya's Muammar Gaddafi to finally ask to cooperate with the U.N. to give up his nuclear weapons materials in 2003. He wanted business investment from overseas and other benefits that had been blocked to an outlaw nation.
