Sector: Health Care

Under President Obama's health care proposals, millions of additional people will have access to health care. Goldman expects this, along with advances in medical technology, will contribute to an "explosion of jobs" in all medical specialties.

Associated Majors: Biology, Public Health, Health Information Technology, Pharmacy, Nursing

What does this have to do with being an MT? These jobs are already in demand. Confused? Are you saying Obama is saving are field or creating new jobs, uhhh like the ones already in demand? Don't get this at all.

What is your problem? - This is good news!

Probably should be on the political board - anon

[ In Reply To ..]
As it sounds like it's a political discussion. Personally I don't know what to think. I've heard if the health care plans go through many physicians will be quitting, i.e. no jobs for our future.

I just don't trust anything until it has already happened in the news. There is no way anyone can plan for their future.
are you kidding me? Has nothing to do with politics...sm - reports
[ In Reply To ..]
More patients = more reports = more tanscriptions = more jobs.
Do you pay any attention at all to the political news? sm - Are YOU kidding us?
[ In Reply To ..]
This is MOST CERTAINLY a political issue. I wouldn't trust anything that comes out of his mouth - look how much he said during his campaign - "absolutely no pork belly projects," "I'll be bringing all our military home from the Mideast," and a multitude of other unkept promises just to get in there. And if he were really concerned about the jobs situation, he would have used the first stimulus (remember when he said that was the main reason for the stimulus????) to do as he said he would do instead of costing the taxpayers now and for many generations billions and billions of dollars so YES THIS IS A POLITICAL ISSUE. You'd best start listening to something other than the mainstream media and what's REALLY going on in this nation before you spout that it's not political!
As presented, this is appropriate MEDICAL news, but political argument of it - belongs on the Politics board.
[ In Reply To ..]
At present it does seem editors will be needed in future, so if that's the case more patients and reports will have to be good for the survivors.
Sorry but saying medical issues and political issues are...sm - The reality of it all
[ In Reply To ..]
issues are separated this year is just plain ludicrous. There is absolutely nothing going on without the political hand-holding. You just might want to do a little research to understand what I mean.
but even less pay - cj
[ In Reply To ..]
compensation rates to facilities and physicians will be cut so obviously that will be passed down to us, too. maybe more reports to type but less money for doing them. work more, work hard, earn less. that is my problem.
Tell me something, if physicians quit their jobs - Questions
[ In Reply To ..]
what kind of work do you think they might do, go to work somewhere like Walmart or McDonald's? I am so not worried about the doctors going out on the soup lines. People working in healthcare have pretty much always been in demand and I do not worry about what ifs. Having lived thru very scary things in my life, i.e. the threat of nuclear bombing in the late 60s, a health care plan is a cake walk.

what is YOUR problem? More patients = more reports!...nm - reports

But when doctors quit practice or retire early - because of the low reimbursement rates

[ In Reply To ..]
such as just happened at the Mayo Clinic in Arizona, who is going to see all these new patients coming into the system? No one has answered that. Yet. No one has yet proposed to REQUIRE that doctors stay in the system and practice medicine at a net loss.... I'd like to see them try it.

Doctors can't afford to practice medicine NOW with the low reimbursement rates by Medicare--it doesn't begin to cover the overhead. The only thing keeping docs in practice is the ability to charge more for patients with private insurance.

How do I know this? Because I am a recovering medical billing office manager, that is how. Fewer and fewer doctors have been accepting Medicare patients for many years now, and it's only getting worse. What good is coverage if there is no doctor available to see the patient?

So no, there won't be more work for the MT, because it's entirely likely even fewer patients will be seen if this abomination passes into law.
You have that right - if the docs do not get paid - we are not getting paid either
[ In Reply To ..]
I used to bill Medicare too and it made me sick the teeny amount the doctors were forced to accept and the nonsense the Feds put them through in order to get it. I can't blame them for refusing to do it - not much different than watching our own wages get cut. They realize they could make more at any other profession (or doing corporate research, etc.) and they get out - the piddling amounts Medicare arbitrarily decides to pay is even more insulting to them than 2cpl VR is to us! I wonder when people will just stop going to med school because the word will get out that there's no profit in being a doctor these days. Fat lot of good it will do to have "everybody" insured if there's no doctors left to treat them.

Another nail in the MT coffin. - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
Obama's a major proponent of EMR.

That means less dictation.
That means less transcription.
That means less work to go around.
That means less jobs available for MTs.

Sorry to burst your bubble.

The fact that the name "Obama" comes up does not turn this topic...sm... - reports

[ In Reply To ..]
into a "political" issue.

I just wanted to point out that if more people get health in surance more people will go to the doctors and this will result in

more medical reports and more medical transcriptions, needing more MTs.

If somebody is "allergic" to Obama, he/she will see in everything that comes out of O's mouth a hidden, negative agenda.

but like I said above.... - cj

[ In Reply To ..]
with reduced compensation rates to facilities and physicians, more reports does not equal more pay, just more work. And as another poster said, since Obama is a huge proponent of EMR, there won't even be more reports! so actually, we end up with less reports and at less money.
Wow, can you still think straight and simple?...nm - ??

My hospital has used EMR for YEARS now - does not make a difference at all
[ In Reply To ..]
in the amount of work we have to do, nothing changed. Maybe most clinic work will soon be done by the physicians attending there but I am telling you, not all EMR hurts the MTs.
true. I am thinking more clinic, office, etc, - cj
[ In Reply To ..]
I know that to be true in hospitals now. But I am thinking more of clinics and offices, and clinics do make up a large part of the MT field work right now. More and more are already transitioning to POS charting, which will eliminate those MTs. As the technology in that regard advances, I believe it will spread into the hospital world as well. I work as a coder for a very large teaching facility in the midwest. We have a level 1 trauma center, hospital with over 550 beds, a medical school, and rehab center, a mental health center, etc., etc., etc. Our hospital went EMR about five years ago, and our clinics are transitioning to POS charting in bunches of 15-20 at a time. Each time they add a new group of clinics, they eliminate positions in MT. I don't think that trend will reverse, only increase.

Ever hear of front-end SR? - No need for MTs there

[ In Reply To ..]
You've made a grave error in assuming that more people going to the doctor automatically equals more work for MTs. If the docs edit their own VR reports, no work for you. If they offshore even more to save a penny, no work for you. If it all goes through VR, you might get the editing "work", just no paycheck to speak of.

BTW - "access" to healthcare doesn't necessarily mean utilizing that healthcare. There will still be copays and deductibles, we still have a recession, and people aren't going to be in a big hurry to spend money on wellness care when they have so many other financial fires to put out. So don't assume that owning a health policy means they'll see the need to run to the doc whenever they get the sniffles, and don't assume when they do, the report will end up in your que.

I think its insane to force everyone to get coverage in order to make more money for the people selling insurance. That should NOT be what this is about - but it is. Expect the providers to make even less, and pass the lost earnings right on to the MTs! The MEDICAL industry will NOT be booming as a result of this - the INSURANCE industry will, and so will whatever agency will be monitoring who has coverage or not and penalizing people for not having it...legalized extorsion is what this is about - not the health of this nation!

Instead of lecturing me get out of this business and look into another field.

Spare your sermons and preachings.
Boo-hoo, everyone knows but me I guess - Questions
[ In Reply To ..]
What is front end, is there a backend as well?
Frontend = Docs do own editing - Backend=MTs do it
[ In Reply To ..]
With frontend SR docs are aware they are using speech recognition software, they are trained to edit and tweak the finished product themselves, and they are told how much money they can save by cutting out the need for MTs entirely by editing their own stuff. Quality suffers because we all know the kind of mistakes docs habitually make - and catching one's own mistakes is harder than catching someone else's. Their reports end up looking like crapola, but they don't care, they're saving moolah.

Backend = what is commonly called "VR", "SR", "ASR", etc. - Docs may or may not be aware their reports are being computer generated by VR. MT's receive the VR product, edit it, pass on the cleaned-up copy to the doctors to sign. The reports still look the way they used to look, but they're staring to get worse as MTs try to speed up and slam through as many reports as possible to get a decent paycheck.
I appreciate the information, not in the dark now NM - Questions

What a bitter attitude you have there, Reports. - Biz
[ In Reply To ..]
Who's saying it's "all so negative and dark and no hope in the future?"

Your belief that government-run healthcare will bring an "explosion" of MT jobs is simplistic, naive, and a bit juvenile.

If you don't want to know about reality, that's fine. But don't knock others who are posting with perhaps a little more knowledge on the subject at hand.
bitter attitude? I am the only one OPTIMISTIC here, read again my posts..nm - reports

[ In Reply To ..]
Be optimistic about whatever you please, but don't have a fit when other people are more grounded in facts and reality and expect a different outcome than you do.

You need to look at the big picture. - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
So your theory is this:

Somehow, the select few who are getting NEW insurance will all start going to the doctor. Somehow, all those doctors will buck the EMR system and make more work for transcriptionists, gladly paying out more of the money they themselves will be seeing less of.

Uh ...

What about the millions who are LOSING the health insurance they had and liked?

Do you know about the "Cadillac Plan" tax?

Do you know that discounts for low-risk people (ie healthy, nonsmoking, nondrinking, 25-year-olds) is going up 187%? Do you think they will still want to go to the doctor?

Do you know how many millions of older adults are being moved to Medicare and losing their private insurance?

Do you know the amount of the new taxes being levied to pay for the "free" healthcare?

Do you know the current rate at which these currently uninsured people use healthcare services? (Just because someone's uninsured doesn't mean they don't go to the hospital. It just means they don't pay for it.)

Do you know enough to discuss things like the new protocols for health screenings such as Paps and mammos?

Do you know the guidlines for limiting care to "prime" groups? (ie reduced care for the very young, the very old, and the mentally or physically compromised)?

If you don't know what I'm talking about on these issues, you have been duped by the rose-colored coverage of the issue and need to do a bit more investigating. Have you read the bill? Has anyone?

Or you can just keep believing that somehow there's going to be more MT work to go around. But be prepared to be disappointed. It'll be a very bitter wake-up call.

P.S. I'm not "allergic" to Obama. What I'm allergic to is ignorance and lies. If that's what you associate with Obama, that's not my problem.
Wow! Reading your post I might just shoot myself in the head! What negativity..nm - reports
