Why is Media Matters a nonprofit organization? They evidently lied on their application...
Here’s how they classified themselves to the IRS to get their 501(c) (3) status in 2003:
Yet, on Wikipedia and probably their website, they post this:
Media Matters for America (MMfA) is a politically progressive[1]media watchdog group that says it is "dedicated to comprehensively monitoring, analyzing, and correcting conservative misinformation in the U.S. media".[2] Set up as a tax-exempt, nonprofit organization, MMfA was founded in 2004…..
FOUNDED IN 2004???
So, Media Matters, by their own admission above is what they do…but in reality, Does anyone here see the IRS definition on their website? How is MM's definition comparable with the classification and tax code designation when they applied in 2003?
What and where was the last, or most recent, sports competition they fostered? Nope, not seen anywhere and even on their tax return for 2010 – their program services $$ amounted to $0. So, sometime after they received their 501(c)(3) status, they changed their “activities and governance” section on their tax return to “a web-based not-for-profit progressive research and information center.”
IOW, they are no longer, according to their own definition and explanation, a non-profit service for "religious, educational, charitable, scientific, literary, testing for public safety, fostering national or international amateur sports competition (as long as it doesn’t provide athletic facilities or equipment), or the prevention of cruelty to children or animals" and should LOSE their 501 status.
;
Service organizations are not political.
The IRS designation/definition is what they filed under so they could get their 501(c)(3). That is NOT what Media Matters is doing. Shall I repeat it?
Classification (NTEE) Education N.E.C.
Nonprofit Tax Code Designation: 501(c)(3)Defined as: Organizations for any of the following purposes: religious, educational, charitable, scientific, literary, testing for public safety, fostering national or international amateur sports competition (as long as it doesn’t provide athletic facilities or equipment), or the prevention of cruelty to children or animals.
Did they help any children or animals last year? Did they do anything charitable last year? Not according to their taxes...unless Obama is a charity that they donated campaign funds to.
They gave $0 for program services for any of the definitions above in 2010, so their 501(c)(3) status should be taken away.
