Excellent article on why assault rifles were invented

Posted: Feb 3, 2013

http://www.duluthnewstribune.com/event/article/id/257441/ "As we were finishing our basic training, we were briefed on new military research coming from data about soldiers in combat in Korea. The research found that most soldiers trained like me rarely remembered to fire more than one shot in a combat firefight. The brain freezes under high stress. Trained routines like aiming a gun and firing an aimed shot at an enemy rarely kick in. Young soldiers panic; they freeze. They don’t remember to even fire their weapon in self-defense. The military researchers said they couldn’t solve the problem of high stress and the brain freezing up in combat, so they were developing a new type of weapon that didn’t need an aimed shot or even to remember to pull the trigger more than once. It was called an assault weapon. All a soldier had to do was pull the trigger once and 100 rounds would go practically at once. No need to aim, just point in the general direction and fire." The entire article is worth reading ;

That is a military weapon - NOT the same as are - owned by civilians.

By the article you posted, then, an AR15 is therefore not an "assault rifle" or "assault weapon" - because it does not have selective fire and does not have full-auto capabilities like the military rifle described.

People have been posting similar information already on this topic. I hope attention is paid.

question - sm

So how many less people would be taken out in...let's say... 30 seconds? If that was the intention of a shooter with an AR15.

Feel free to compare AR15 assault on human life compared to an "assault rifle" or "assault weapon."

I'm sure we all would appreciate your expert input.

It's probably a moot point. - ..

If you can't get a Scary Black Rifle, you can get any number of loaded handguns instead and carry half a dozen or more of them, easily. You could have just as many bullets as the AR15, if not more. And the time to drop one gun and pick up another would be negligible, especially if you've got the use of both hands. Or you could go for the big bang a la Oklahoma City, instead. There's more than one way to murder a bunch of people at a time, and it can all be researched on the internet.

I don't live in a world where some murders are going to magically not happen because one type of gun is outlawed - especially one that is involved in so very few murders, relative to the total number.

The results of the former Assault Weapons Ban were equivocal at best. I don't understand why some think we'll get different results if we try it again. This is all so reminiscent of the brouhaha over "Saturday night specials" some years ago.
Relative to the total number says it all. - total number meaninging

HUMAN LIVES.

I'm sad anyone could equate a "relative number" to my neighbor, child, relative, or any human life on this earth.

Cold.
Yes it is. - ..

You aren't going to be able to magically disappear all guns from the U.S., since gun ownership is a right that is extremely unlikely to be rescinded.

We need to deal with reality and not emotion.
True. Let us all not be sad at senseless death - my family member is dead
[ In Reply To ..]
that is reality. I shouldn't cry. I shouldn't ask why. I should pursue the guilty. It's reality. I shouldn't cry.

When one mourns, reality doesn't matter. I hope you never "feel" reality.

Really good point about teachers being able to respond - to any armed assault

[ In Reply To ..]
I think that most teachers would NOT be heroes in a stres situation like that. Their instincts would be to protect the children, not find a gun and be able to shoot back while being fired on.

There could be deterrent value, though - ..

[ In Reply To ..]
There might be deterrent value in allowing teachers to concealed carry/removing the gun-free zone designation from schools. It would remove schools from the list of places where a shooter would be very unlikely to encounter effective resistance (until the cops arrived from offsite somewhere).

Mass shootings (more than 4 victims) often, though not always, take place where guns aren't allowed. If qualified people were *allowed* to concealed carry into more places, such as schools, that would make schools not an automatic "safe zone" for a nutcase to kill X number of guaranteed unarmed, unprotected people before the cops arrived. It wouldn't even matter if no teachers *chose* to become qualified to concealed carry. The fact that there might be someone on campus to counter a gunman would be enough, I think, to protect students in schools.

I would NOT want teachers with guns - RC

[ In Reply To ..]
Why not the janitor? Or the yard duty?

Come on...do we really want teachers doing double-duty as security personnel? Look at the statistics of people who own guns and how many of them are involved in accidents. Now we want teachers to carry? All that does is heighten the risk of an accident happening in a school.
Gee, diss the janitor too. Class-conscious much? - ..
[ In Reply To ..]
No particular reason a janitor or landscape maintenance worker wouldn't or couldn't qualify for a CCW. The CCW permit and testing doesn't have an income or job requirement attached to it.

Thanks very much for commenting about gun accidents. I'm sure that statistically it would be MUCH more common for an accident to happen than for a teacher or other personnel to have to defend against an armed attacker at a school.

Which does bring up the reality that these thankfully rare incidents are being used politically to try to ban guns - not to make children safer.
Are you offended I mentioned the yard duty too? - RC
[ In Reply To ..]
Just curious.
poster did not diss the janitor - you did - lol
[ In Reply To ..]
RC included all allied school employees together. YOU separated the teachers from the janitors. Why?
Because the teachers are in the classroom - with the kids, that's why. nm

..
The point is, NONE of them are professional - bodyguards.
[ In Reply To ..]
It doesn't matter if it's a teacher or a janitor or a yard duty, giving a gun to any of them is a risk.
Sure. Yet we are going to base legislation - on a very rare occurrence.
[ In Reply To ..]
Well, nobody said the gun-banners were logical.
Not sure who is banning guns. That would - be a whole different conversation.

Definition For LeonaG Who Thinks The Term Assault WeaponDec 16, 2012
I agree with you that there is nothing "magical" about these guns and that all guns can kill.  However, the "assault weapon" term is as real as real gets and is specifically defined in the Assault Weapons Ban that expired 8 long years ago: Semi-automatic rifles able to accept detachable magazines and two or more of the following: Folding or telescopic lens. Pistol grip. Bayonet mount Flash suppressor, or threaded barrel designed to accommodate one Grenade launcher (more ...

1. You support revisionist history. When I was in a high school history class, I’ll never forget one thing our teacher taught us: what you read in history books isn’t always accurate. The example she used was history books in the Soviet Union, now known as Russia. She informed us, to my shock and horror, that the Soviets pretty much included what they liked in the history books and left out everything else. As a result, she said, there were generations of Russian students who were m ...
