Definition for LeonaG who thinks the term assault weapon

Posted: Dec 16, 2012

I agree with you that there is nothing "magical" about these guns and that all guns can kill.  However, the "assault weapon" term is as real as real gets and is specifically defined in the Assault Weapons Ban that expired 8 long years ago:

Semi-automatic rifles able to accept detachable magazines and two or more of the following:

  • Folding or telescopic lens.
  • Pistol grip.
  • Bayonet mount
  • Flash suppressor, or threaded barrel designed to accommodate one
  • Grenade launcher (more precisely, a muzzle device that enables launching or firing rifle grenades, though this applies only to muzzle mounted grenade launchers and not those mounted externally).

Semi-automatic pistals with detachable magazines and two or more of the following:

  • Magazine that attaches outside the pistol grip
  • Threaded barrel to attach barrel extender, flash suppressor, handgrip, or suppressor.
  • Barrel shroud that can be used as a hand-hold
  • Unloaded weight of 50 oz (1.4 kg) or more
  • A semi-automatic version of a fully automatic firearm.

Semi-automatic shotguns with two or more of the following:

  • Folding or telescoping stock
  • Pistol grip
  • Fixed capacity of more than 5 rounds
  • Detachable magazine.

The Brady bunch, lol. Welcome!

As I explained more than once and slowly, THIS rifle did not have special characteristics that made it appreciably more deadly than other semi-automatic rifles. It is, essentially, a visual copy of a military weapon, but made for the civilian market.

I have previously mentioned the Assault Weapons Ban a number of times. A number of the items that were banned were merely cosmetic and did not really add to the "deadliness" of the weapons involved. I mean, seriously, bayonet holders? Pistol grips? Folding/telescoping stocks?

Flash suppressors and silencers are mostly illegal, separate from the old AWB (assault weapons ban). The expiration of the AWB did not result in carnage in the streets over and above the usual number of murders; that's why it wasn't renewed. Look up the stats.

People on this board have been talking about this gun's "military capabilities." It had none, essentially, that mattered, other than the usual capability of every gun, that of firing bullets.

The fact that its original model - the real military weapon - was made to kill people doesn't mean the civilian copy can ONLY kill people, or that people who buy it are compelled to run out with it and kill people. Every gun that fires bullets can kill people. You can buy a pretty pink shotgun at Walmart that can kill people. There are certainly more powerful guns on the market than the AR-15. It is used for a number of legal activities that the Brady bunch on here seems to think don't exist or are actively mocking.

Out here in the Real World, farmers have to protect livestock from coyotes and semi-feral dogs that city dwellers drop off and abandon. When you call the cops, they might not get here for an hour or more. Injured cows and hogs sometimes need to be dispatched humanely on the spot (or slaughtered for food). Feral hogs, which are an invasive species that cause millions of dollars worth of damage, can be hunted where I live at any time.

And finally, back to the shooting sports (not including hunting), which I refer to as target shooting, which are enjoyed by over 15 million people in the U.S. I suppose you'll be locking them up first, before moving on to the rest of the 80 million gun owners.

FYI, I'm acquainted with a young man on full college scholarship - for his rifle shooting skills. Nationally ranked and will probably get picked for the next Olympics.

Although discussion seemed to quickly degenerate into largely irrelevant arguments over the proper terms to use (as far as I read), her initial offering was not troll-like. She was leaped on because she seemed to be arguing against gun control in a room full of people with a different mood.

I'm for stricter controls and will argue for those all day, which is why I posted, but let's not attack people for offering INFORMATION or refuse to accept valid information because it's offered by someone who disagrees with us.

This applies to her first post only, BTW. I stopped reading what had happened soon after that for the same reason I usually abandon those discussions that angle sharply toward the right margin. :)
Info like the assault weapons term is a scare tactic, to which OP here - replied with factual data, and
[ In Reply To ..]
which in turn saw responses aimed at the hubris behind that wholly opinionated statement? When a contributor here spends inordinate amounts of time trying to reduce any important political issue down to an easily dismissed, worn-out catch phrase, given the "mood," not only on this forum, but across the nation, I think comments that take aim at that are entirely appropriate and are to be expected. Anger is a MAJOR component of grief, particularly for those who have suffered past gun violence tragedies, gravitate toward political solutions and are burdened with the utter frustration of lack of Congressional political will and its NRA-driven intransigence. It is beyond the pale when they then turn around and try to float the notion that the NRA and its supporters are innocent bystanders in this who bear no direct or indirect responsibility moving forward. Along those same lines are having lectures on the "ethics" of DARING to discuss gun control at this juncture, and suggestions of child exploitation which, I might add, in no way qualify as factual input.

IMO, most of these types of threads are taking issue with the style of her posts, which comes off as not terribly mindful of that "mood" of grief, and not the information content, which typically draws an informative return volley. It doesn't take long for the garbage-in-garbage out axiom to kick under such circumstances.
Only read your intro, and yes: Precisely. OP offered - factual information, thus worth consideration.nm
