The Skin Tone Advisory System

U.S. District Judge Susan R. Bolton delivered a clear and legally compelling decision last week to block several measures of Arizona's new immigration law from going into effect.

Evidently, aside from the profiling potential, the law - has jurisdictional and

[ In Reply To ..]
Constitutional problems. We have become very accustomed to seeing the wingnuts mumble one thing out of one side of their mouths and another out of the other when it comes to the Constitution, a document they would just as soon burn as look at when it gets in the way of their partisan agendas, not confined to immigration, I might add.

THERE's your clue. Guess that threat alert chart message flew right on past you. Ever heard of ethnic cleansing? It's decidedly UN-American.

Ethnic Cleansing? Because ILLEGAL aliens are illegal? - Backwards Typist

[ In Reply To ..]
Where in the law did it state anything about 'ethnic cleansing' and where in the law goes against the Constitution?

This is a serious question. Care to answer it?
Racial profiling does not distingish between illegals and - citizens, legal residents,
[ In Reply To ..]
naturalized citizens or varying degrees of olive, tanned, or dark-skinned people, which the so-called threat level chart in the cartoon illustrates beautifully. For those folks, this is clearly a 4th amendment issue and has the potential to clog the courts with 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th amendment challenges.

You are asleep at the wheel if you think the AZ immigration law will not give a light stuck on green for racial profiling to become institutionalized. This is a slippery slope indeed. We are already hearing from SP's wing-nut camp about national identity cards. Lindsey Graham and John Kyl think nothing of pushing for the creation of a brand new class of refugees, that being childen born here to whom they would deny citizenship, never once stopping to consider the problems that would arise for them in establishing national identity. It is not a foregone conclusion that Mexico or any other foreign country for that matter would automatically extend citizenship to them if they were born here just because WE say they should.

There are forces in this country for whom these practices would never go far enough. Whether you want to recognize it or not, these are the elements of ethnic cleansing that have no business whatsoever being encoded into our laws or implied by relaxed enforcement practices that allow physical appearance to be the sole factor that determines "just cause." These proposals represent a TREMENDOUS step backward for the hard-won civil rights OF OUR OWN citizens.

Your short answer is that immigration law cannot begin and end with turning a blind eye to citizens, whether naturalized or native, legal residents and those born on American soil, all of whom enjoy equal protection under the Constitution.

Cooler heads must prevail. It is inappropriate to institute such measures in the absence of comprehensive immigration reform that addresses and places equal emphasis on streamlining the various avenues toward legalization and also recognizes and honors the history and traditions of our nation as one of immigrants.
"Cooler heads must prevail".. OMG. How about rational ones? - Your posts reminds me of why an

organizaton like NAACP or ACLU have become a total joke.. they go way overboarding in assumming everyone is out to get them. Illegal immigration is a huge problem. If a state like Arizona is not able to get the help they need from the Feds, what do you want? I have relatives there, and they state that overwhelmingly, people there were FOR this bill. If you have the paperwork, you dont have to worry. Some people may be inconvenienced temporarily by the law, but it is time to start putting country and safety of LEGAL citizens over this politically correct nonsense!
OMG. What about educated ones? - George Bush on racial profiling....
[ In Reply To ..]
"Racial Profiling is wrong and we will end it in America." Ummm, W seems to think profiling happens, as does

AG John Ashcroft: "Using race as a proxy for potential criminal behavior is unconstitutional, and it undermines law enforcement by undermining the confidence that people can have in law enforcement." Cooler heads.

About that anecdote. AZ has 380 miles of border with Mexico. Texas has 1254 miles of border with Mexico. Current Mayor Annise Parker of Houston dead-set against AZ-style law for Texas. Former Mayor of Houston and gubernatorial candidate Bill White is dead-set against AZ-style law for Texas. Even the Village idiot, Spanish-speaking Governor Slick Lets-Succeed-From-The-Union Perry has the sense to be dead-set against AZ-style law for Texas...of course, he is probably just throwing his tpot compadres under the bus temporarily for the sake of the Latino vote, without which his reign would come to an abrupt halt.

If you have papers it shouldn't be a problem. Through what looking glass, Alice? Some people have been inconvenienced temporarily from the law, have they? That Constitution sure can be a pesky little document when it gets in the way of conservative political agendas, huh?

Here is a reading list so you can become more educated on the reality of racial profiling. Of special insterest is the Arizona report link below. Maybe once you take a peek, you will summon up the courage to address the subject more directly, but I won't be holding my breath.

is most definitely about racial profiling. Don't take my word for it. Thirty percent of the population in AZ is Hispanic or Latino, with approximately 6.9% of them being illegal. Ask the 23.1% of them who are there legally of are citizens if it is about racial profiling. Ask the 30% of legal Hispanic or Latino immigrants or citizens in Texas if it is about racial profiling or the 44% in New Mexico or the 35+% Hispanic or Latino legal residents or citizens in California. Ask the American Indian populations in those states. Ask legal residents or citizens from the Middle East, Iran, and even Pakistan in those states if it is about legal profiling.

And by the way, it is also about the CONSTITUTION, lest we forget.

Okay.. you asked what an illegal looks like...its YOU - that do the assuming, not us!.nm

[ In Reply To ..]
You yourself already know what most illegals in Arizona would look like, so dont act all holier than thou about it. Most illegals there come from Mexico, duh, so what do you THINK they look like?. Be realistic. There are millions of Mexicans who do this, so sorry if you look like a Mexican and get asked for papers. We have to do SOMETHING... your suggestion would be to do what?? Have them volunteer to turn themselves in? Have you EVER answered that question?
AZ Atty Generals 16 page plan to address ongoing racial profiling - No assumptions needed.
[ In Reply To ..]
Read it and weep. Link below. Think that is going to disappear should they enact that law? Think again.

No, I do not know what they look like. I live in Houston, where 43% of our population is Hispanic or Latino and of those, more than 400,000 are illegal. I will be darned if I can distinguish between those with papers and those without on sight based on physial appearance. Racial profiling (which happens here all the time, especially in the notorious Bellaire subdivision) eliminates the requirement to even try. Our H-Town economy would collapse right out from under us without them. Get real about that, why dont you?

I dont DO holier-than-thou (though I suspect you are quite good at it) and I do not walk down the street preoccupied with which do and which do not have papers. They are my neighbors, my friends, my coworkers and my fellow Houstonians. I am also married to a foreign national who can easily be mistaken for illegal by folks less sensitive to ethnic distinctions, so I absolutely ABHOR racial profiling.

In Arizona, the American Indians also bear strong resemblance, dont they? They are more legal than you or I. Can you tell the difference between them, legal/citizens Hispanics and/or Latinos? Really?

Dont foget about the 4th and 14th amendment while grousing about what we do and do not have to do about this.

racial profiling. I can't remember the law myself at this moment, but I read it and I think, but not sure, charges can be broought for profiling. They cannot just stop someone because of their color, etc.

Google AZ Law. Every law in the state is online. Read it again (which I will do tomorrow-it's late and I've got an early start) and then tell me if you still think it's racial profiling.

RP is already a documented problem in AZ - according to its own reports.
[ In Reply To ..]
See post above (George Bush on racial profiling). The law as it would be applied sanctions the practice whether it actually states it does or not. Its only enforcement requirement/criteria for probable cause is physical appearance. Tell me, BWT. What does an illegal look like?

the crime, murder, drug problem they have created? Sure, legal citizens commit crimes, but stats prove in AZ for example, overwhelmingly they are committed by illegals. It is out of control. How would YOU solve this??
