Atheist group wants to stop World Trade Center cross

Posted: Aug 8, 2011

Trying to use the World Trade Center as if it were a christian tragedy rather than a human tragedy is wrong. Not only did Christians die that day, but so did a lot of Jews, Hindus, Muslims, Buddhists and yes, Atheists and Agnostics.

No one group has a monopoly on the site, nor on the suffering and pain the event caused. You would think a religion founded on brotherhood, tolerance and inclusion would try to understand that- but once again, American Christians have forgotten Christs message, and are trying to use CHRISTIANITY AS A CONSERVATIVE BULLY PULPIT. Shame on them.

====================================

(CNN) -- A group of atheists has filed a lawsuit to stop the display of the World Trade Center cross at a memorial of the 9/11 terror attacks.

The "government enshrinement of the cross was an impermissible mingling of church and state," the American Atheists say in a press statement.

The group says it filed the lawsuit this week in state court in New York and posted a copy of the lawsuit on its website.

The lawsuit names many defendants, including the state of New Jersey, the city of New York , New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and New Jersey Governor Chris Christie.

The World Trade Center cross, two intersecting steel beams that held up when the twin towers collapsed on September 11, 2001, is seen as iconic to some.

The cross was moved Saturday from near a church to its new home at the 9/11 Memorial and Museum. There was also ceremonial blessing of the cross in a service led by Father Brian Jordan, a Franciscan monk who ministered to workers clearing the area after the 9/11 attacks.

Joe Daniels, 9/11 Memorial president, said Saturday that the cross is "an important part of our commitment to bring back the authentic physical reminders that tell the history of 9/11 in a way nothing else could.
"Its return is a symbol of the progress on the Memorial & Museum that we feel rather than see, reminding us that commemoration is at the heart of our mission."

But the atheist group says the cross sends a symbol of something different.

"The WTC cross has become a Christian icon," said Dave Silverman, president of the atheist group. "It has been blessed by so-called holy men and presented as a reminder that their god, who couldn't be bothered to stop the Muslim terrorists or prevent 3,000 people from being killed in his name, cared only enough to bestow upon us some rubble that resembles a cross. It's a truly ridiculous assertion."

I am a Christian and my husband is an atheist. I don't make him go to church and he doesn't make me not celebrate Christmas, etc. We coexist peacefully in regards to are differences spiritually. I don't get why others can't. If God doesn't exist to them, then the cross is a meaningless symbol. I guess I don't understand why atheists are so threatened by a being that they believe doesn't exist.

It's not just about atheists - sm

and it definitely is not about their feeling "threatened" by the Christian symbolism. I think that divisive statement in and of itself illustrates why the WTC cross (or any other potentially controversial installment) should not be a permanent feature of that site. I would go so far as to reverse the question and ask why it is that Christians feel so compelled to mark this particular site with a towering, in-your-face, burned out, cross-section of blackened steel girder remnants that happen to be cross-shaped? For me, it would invoke images of the planes, fires, falling buildings and rubble.

The first 2 paragraphs of the OP say it better than I ever could. The issue is about a memorial marker that for some denotes exclusion and would visibly give deference to one religion over all others. The act of placing such a symbol smack dab in the middle of the plaza is NOT a meaningless gesture by any stretch of the imagination. You might be able to understand it better if you would take a moment and just imagine how you would feel if they decided to display a solitary Star of David, a single Islamic Crescent, an obelisk inscribed with a Hindu Aum or a Buddhist Dharma Wheel, or a sculpture of an Atheist Empty Set or Agnostic giant question mark.

People of all religious faiths (or lack thereof) died there that day. It is THEIR memorial. I think it is inappropriate to erect ANY religious symbol there, for the sake of a more inclusive spirit of peace and harmony you speak of in your post, especially since people from all over the world will come to that place to remember them and to pay their respects, along with non-Christian family members who lost their loved ones that day.

"I absolutely agree that it is okay for those of the Left to critique, mock, [and] deride Christianity, but Islam gets a free pass," Zuckerman told CNSNews.com. Unbalanced Trade With India?Nov 06, 2010
Is India going to be the 'new China'? It sounds like it with all the CEOs wanting to do business there with low labor costs. I'm thinking outsoursing MT work was just the beginning and we can yell all we want about it but our voices will be ignored. EU And US Free Trade TalksFeb 13, 2013
It will be interesting to see how this affects the US economy--here's a little of what we are looking at:   One aim of the free-trade agreement would be to eliminate or reduce tariffs - taxes that apply to imported goods. For both the EU and US average tariffs are already low, below 3% on one measure. But further reductions could nonetheless stimulate additional trade and there are some areas where tariffs are much higher, notably food. Beyond that, the negotiations would try to re ...
