Anybody had an NCV test?

Posted: Jun 10, 2011

Well, after putting up with this wrist/hand pain for way longer than I should have, I finally went in to see my PCP yesterday. She told me I would have to have an NCV of the upper extremities before she could advise me further on what could be done. I called the facility yesterday and was able to get it on Monday morning at 8. I'm a bit nervous as I've never had this done before. Is it relatively painless? What should I expect? They told me it would take about an hour and not to wear any lotion on my arms.

For those of you who have had an NCV, did you then go on to have surgery or have you been successfully managed wtih medications/splints, etc.? I am currently taking quite a bit of Advil on a daily basis and do wear both nighttime and daytime splints.

Thank you in advance for any input! Cool

I have had EMG and NCS, no big deal - cindy

they hook some electrodes to your fingers and arm and give you little shocks. They also stick a needle in your arm and measure whatever, but it is just a little stick. I only have mild CTS but never needed surgery. I type for orthos though and the patients usually recover pretty fast and do not have problems with this surgery. Good luck and let me know who you do.

thanks, Cindy! (sm) - dln

The test was pretty uneventful. I just wasn't sure what to expect. It wasn't really painful, just like you said "shocking"! The NCV guy did tell me that he has had people walk out on him because it was so uncomfortable, but he also mentioned that those were the cases that were really, really bad, had waited too long and had muscle atrophy, etc. Hopefully, I will get the results soon and get this pain taken care of once and for all. That's good that you never needed surgery. That's what I'm hoping for!

Thanks again for responding!

How Accurate Is The AFP Prenatal Test In Predicting Down's Syndrome?Mar 04, 2010
My niece is pregnant with her first child.  She is young, 19 years old, so she is not considered high risk.  However, in her prenatal screening, she had what her doctor called "a slightly abnormal" AFP test.  Everyone was pretty upset and I did a little research and found conflicting information.  Some say the test should stop being performed because it is inaccurate.  My niece has decided to forego having an amniocentesis because she says it will not change her mind.&n ...
