Been there. Direct from psychiatrist: Sit. Put your hands on your knees and breath as deeply as you can. Take in a very large breath through your nose and let it out slowly through your mouth. Do this 3 times as deeply and as slowly as possible. Helped me a lot. Then, if your are Christian, say the "Our Father." Helped me immensely. And remember, this too shall pass. It will.

Grounded to your inner self. Exercise, stretch, breathe. Distraction comes next for me when I'm in that situation. Call a friend, watch a movie, read a book....it will give your mind a reboot. Hang tight, it will pass.

Ideas from an anxious woman - inside

Calm your environment with candles or cinammon in water on stove to scent air. Dim lights. Soft music or silence. Take a bath if you are in position to do so. Think of the fondest memory you can conjure up and relive it with focus on all details (weather, who was there, what you had on, who said what and remember how you felt on this spectacular day). When lying down to bed, try to lie flat on your back touch your feet together, clasp your hands like in a coffin or in a prayer - this is calming and I reason it due to energy flowing from one extremity to the other. But it works, and I think praying with hands together has a reason and this is it.

Thank God for internet!

When night I had issue with anxiety and a stranger and I spent 2 hours in an instant message as he was talking me down. I was so grateful for him and how kind and thoughtful he was, never considered me a looney tune and just said good-bye and good luck at about 4 AM.

Hang in there, dear.

Could be a rebound effect. - sm

"A rebound effect is what happens when the body tries to bring itself back into balance -- homeostasis after a drug has been taken by pulling in the opposite direction of the drug. One of the ironies of addiction is that the rebound effect causes the user to experience the very same effects they were hoping to escape through drug use."

Anxiety - Linda Nitzschke

Sorry you are having a hard time. To prevent future problems, check out the Hallelujah Diet at hacres.com. It isn't an easy lifestyle change, but the most powerful part of the program is the carrot juice that you make fresh with a juicer, not a blender or VitaMix, etc. The trick is to remove the fiber, as then the carrot juice is able to go so completely into your system cuz it requires very little digestion, and you will get way more bang for your buck...I mean carrot...than if you were to eat the carrot whole or blended (all the nutrition is in the juice, not the fiber). Juice veggies, and eat your fruit whole (fruits, these days esp., have too much sugar, making them not the best for juicing). You can juice other things with the carrots (even just a little bit of fruit), but make sure each serving contains 8 oz. of carrot juice. The stuff is amazing...great power to heal. I'll bet it would help you in the future to get rid of these anxiety attacks. Start reading at www.hacres.com, tho. Pretty impressive program, and any change you make will help, even if you don't go whole "hog" on the program. Good luck!

Been there - maybe this will help

Our mind actually listens and responds to what we are telling it. One of the most helpful things I learned was to simply say, "This is not an emergency." It will help set off the "calming response," that inevitably (eventually) follows an anxiety attack. Just calmly remind your mind that this is not an emergency. (From "Don't Panic," by Reid Wilson).

I am so sorry you are going through this... my husband has severea anxeity with panic - I know how it feels

I used to have panic attacks when I was 21. So, I know how you feel. Currently, my husband is on disability due to severe panic attacks. I am so sorry you are going through this. Just know you are not alone. I will be keeping you in my prayers.

I hope you are feeling better but I am - been there and back

sure you are as it probably has passed. I have started taking generic Zoloft for panic attacks and it has really worked. It is sedating too. I started at 25 mg and I am now at 50 mg. Your regular doctor can give it to you. Please keep us posted and e-mail me if you need someone to talk to.

Thanks you you who have responded to my plea. I was finally able to sleep some but becasue of the meds I took I'm a bit groggy today. I need to work to make up my time or lose the OT I had accrued. I get these things 4 or 5 times a year and they suck. Because they only happen that little my doctor and I decided to just have meds on hand. I taken enough daily medications that I don't want to add more to it. I will take everything you all have provided me into consideration, and I really do appreciate your responses. I was desperate last night and didn't know where to turn. Just typing that short amount took me 10 minutes to get it right and then I see this morning I missed a comma. Again, thanks to you all.

I'm late, but in a case like this, don't post on a msg - board, get medical attention.

If she were to get medical attention, they would - been there and back

tell her she is having a anxiety/panic attack and probably give her meds which she already has and send her home. Coming to this board was a great help to her and I am glad she came here. Besides, I have anxiety/panic attacks too and I learned a lot from the people who responded to her post, especially reading a book while working through it.

It took 3 days but I made it through, thanks - again for everyone who responded

Try Yoga breathing--ancient techniques to calm you. One I remember is: Breathe in to a slow count of 7, hold for a slow count of 7, breathe out to a slow count of 7, hold breath out for a slow count of 7. Repeat as long as necessary.

Best to all with anxiety. - Been there, done that.-nm

Don't know how much Xanax you normally take, but missing it for 3 days or coming off is very dangerous, can cause seizures and put you on the mental ward. Have to taper correctly. Neurologists give seizure meds for anxiety and can help you taper from Xanax properly.

Depression And AnxietyJan 13, 2011
Has anyone been actually treated for depression and anxiety?  I have been going to a psychologist, but it seems like it's going to take forever to make any progress!  I get just as frustrated and panicky knowing I have to go to an appointment as I do sitting at home wishing for work! Just wondering if anyone has had any success with therapy, or if anyone has any real life suggestions or stories about how they overcame this illness.  I've been feeling helpless and at the ...
