I am hoping that somebody can help me understand panic attacks. Literally 1 month ago I started having severe panic attacks that lasted about 3-4 hours and outrageous crying that I could not stop wtih killer chest pain, to the point of feeling like I was being shocked right on my sternum. I have ended up in the ER 3 times in this time frame and I have no idea what the ___ is going on. I have NEVER had panic attacks before and I am completely confused. Any ideas would be great. I have started on Lexapro and that was the reason for 1 of my trips to the ER since it made my entire face numb all the way to the top of my chest and I felt like I was having a hard time swallowing from 1, yes 1 and the very first one of the LExapro. I was cut back to 1/4 of a 10 mg tab of Lexapro and it si still causing the left side of my face to go numb from my ear to my chin. It does help the crying but not so much the panic attacks. I am lost for sure. My doc has now said I need to go on Celexa and get an MRI too to see about the numbness in my face. I am not understanding the onset of alll this. I have been under a lot of stress but I have been under more than this in the past. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Has your doctor or psychiatrist tried clonazepam or another anti-anxiety drug to go along with the Lexapro? It sounds like you need something to stop the panic attacks from occurring and keep the anxiety level down. Lexapro only helps generalized anxiety and depression. It takes a while for Lexapro to kick in. Sometimes it takes two drugs (antidepressant and anti-anxiety) to work. If you can, go to a psychiatrist because he/she knows the medications and how they work better than a family doctor. Sounds like anxiety to me. Keep at it until you find a drug that works for you. There is hope!

Been there, done that also, but also doing that still on occasion. The only med that curbs the panic and anxiety for me (and my MDs have tried many, many) is over-the-counter Estroven. It contains black cohosh which I find kills the anxiety. This has been the answer to my prayers and is for me my ticket to feeling "normal." Best of luck to you. Panic is a terrible beast to live with.

Thank you both so much. I am hating this not myself feeling. I do know that it came on hard a month ago right after my cycle ended. It has flared up again this week as my cycle has started again. Does the Estroven also have estrogen in it? I am at a loss right now completely in how to handle this anymore. I have no idea if I need a secondary drug on top of the Lexapro. I am a very "light weight" in terms of drugs and effects of them. I can't even take meclizine for nausea or vertigo because it knocks me out for at least 3 hours. Benadryl is a guaranteed night night for me for at least 10 hours. I have a son that has autism so I can't be "out of it". I am hoping that new ideas would help me handle this. Sorry for length jsut desperate.

You said it all when you described it as the "not myself feeling." I remember when everyting felt strange and scary and different. Even light looked different to me. My hearing was affected. It felt like the words people were speaking just bounced off my ears. Nothing was sinking in. All I could do was hang on and try to survive. If one has never experienced severe anxiety with panic there are really no words to describe the feeling. I take Xanax for anxiety and for sleep, but I only take it when I feel I need it. I had four years of counseling, even though the worst was over. I just needed to know that someone was there for me. The emotional support was worth everything. I am not able to tolerate most meds, but Xanax literally saved my life during the worst times. Good luck to you.

I had to change jobs and started working at home. The office I worked for was "the office from hell". Sometimes a change will help. If you can afford it take some time off and see if that helps. Good Luck - you can get through it - it may not seem like it but you will.

I just wanted to let everyone know thanks for all the great advice and to give up a site that has actually helped me. It is called Ilovepanicattacks.com
Amazingly it has helped me to understand it all and help me deal with it better. I am just hoping that if anybody else has trouble too, then see what you think. I am getting better about recongnizing the the first signs of attacks coming on now after watching some of his vidoes. Thanks to you all so much.

I am wondering if anyone else out there has suffered from crippling panic attacks. I can get them in crowded places, escalators, etc. My biggest issue comes from driving. I can't handle lots of traffic but sometimes even in light traffic is becomes a problem. This is very serious to me and is beginng to affect my everyday life. Years and years ago, during my horribly traumatic and ugly divorce, I developed panic/anxiety disorder and was treated with medication and counseling. I've had medication and it works, but I don't want to go down that road again. Was anyone able to catch the House Intelligence Committee testimony yesterday? It was pretty fascinating... and civil!! None of them seemed impressed with Snowden, and if the testimony was correct, there's really no way a lot of what he said he could do was true.
