Anxiety/panic attack techniques

Posted: Aug 8, 2013

I've had medication and it works, but I don't want to go down that road again.

After 3 years of not having any attacks or problems, they're back. :(  I don't know why, but I thought the problem was gone forever after I left a troubled relationship.  Something went wrong last month and I've been teetering on the edge ever since.

I'm thinking of buying a biofeedback machine. Has anyone tried it?

I've been trying to do meditation and I know it's good for me, but to be honest, it doesn't get me through an attack.

Sorry, no. - sm

I have had panic attacks for 18 years and I have tried, it seems like, EVERY possible treatment, from medications to therapy, to exposure therapy, self-help books, Lucinda Bassett, etc and absolutely NOTHING has worked for me. I will also stop having them and thing "great, that's over" and may not have another issue for a year or two and then they are just back, no rhyme or reason. The ONLY thing that I have found works for me, slightly is just a "who cares" attitude. The anticipation seems to be the worst, so I just tell myself I don't even care if I have a panic attack, it will go away and I will be fine and that sometimes works. Another thing is I started exercising and in exercise, I NEED my heart rate up, so I just tell myself that when my heart rate goes up during a panic attack, just maybe I am burning a few calories, lol. That's all I got though, panic/anxiety is a very cruel illness for sure.

Me too. - panic

I tell myself "so what if I pass out" "what will happen?" People will help me and then it's over. Although I have never passed out. If I dwell on the anticipation of an attack it is waaaay worse and lasts longer. I too have taken the Xanax and that did help me but don't want to be dependent. I do use valerian root 1 to 2 caps when I feel anxious in the morning or know that I will be in a situation that is anxiety producing and that does seem to help me relax. The pills smell bad but that's the only negative. They take the edge off.

I almost picked up valerian today, but - got gaba instead.

I've also been taking kava a few times a day and adrenal support.

I actually resorted to taking a pain killer this morning, just to take the edge off. Of course, that made me feel like a total heel. But the panic did go away. Obviously, that's not a solution. It was an act of desperation. :(

I had a panic attack last week, just before visiting family. It came out of no where, I really thought I was having a heart attack and was ready to tell my hubby to take me to the ER. I popped a beta blocker and a Xanax. This happened during PMS so it was probably worse. Its my first panic attack in years. No amount of self talk really helps, just pills. I only take them as needed though, so as not to depend on them.
Oh yea, I forgot about propranolol for anxiety - sm

My psychiatrist prescribed me that and she said taken daily you almost can't have a panic attack cause it keeps your heart rate low. Me, well I tend to have a bit of a hypochondriac component to my anxiety, so I was certain if I took it my heart rate would be TOO low, but it does sound like it could work for those of you who may wanna try it.

I have never passed out either - sm

I'm pretty sure that passing out isn't even a common factor with panic attacks, so not sure why we panic ourselves into thinking we are going to pass out. Only ONE time ever did I have a panic attack so bad that my heart rate was 140s for more than an hour, couldn't get it down. I had to go to the ER and even after there, my heart was beating so fast my body was jumping off of the table and they could only make me better with IV Ativan. BUT, even with all of that, I never passed out....so I think it's pretty safe to assume we won't:)

I'm sorry about your attacks. - "who cares"

[ In Reply To ..]
I'll try to have that attitude, but as I'm sure you know, it's not easy.

My husband is very understanding, but I worry about how my anxiety is affecting our relationship, and of course that brings on more attacks.

has anybody tried - ashwaghanda?

[ In Reply To ..]
it is a pure herb from Himalaya and it is an anti-stress herb. started taking them a few weeks ago and I did start to feel calmer inside. puts me in a better mood, too. less angry, less irritable. it won't hurt to at least give it a try! It surprised me, as I never truly expected it to work either.
Yes, I've tried ashwaghanda - sm

I take it daily in an adrenal supplement that also contains holy basil. I think it, combined with kava, helps a little bit, but the holy basil tends to make me too tired about an hour after I take it.

I was taking plain ashwaghanda for a while, maybe I'll go back to that and leave out the holy basil.

Surprisingly, kava does not make me tired. It does help, but it wears off in a couple of hours and I don't exactly want to take it a million times a day.

I noticed favorable effects within 2 days. I was so surprised at how much calmer I was feeling, my better mood, less anger, less irritability. I stopped taking it for a few days just to be sure. Went right back to the way it was before, so taking it daily now. I can tell when I do not take it or miss a day. The effects are subtle...kind of sneak up on you. Like I said in my first post, I was not expecting a change...did not look for one. maybe that was why it came as such a surprise when I told myself..."hey! I feel better! I am not angry!" and narrowed the change down to that. I am not saying it will work for everyone, but it surely worked for me! and I was a hard case, I thought. :-)

So glad you posted this OP. No longer feel alone. - :) No message

Panic/anxietyJan 19, 2010
Years and years ago, during my horribly traumatic and ugly divorce, I developed panic/anxiety disorder and was treated with medication and counseling.  Lately I feel like I cannot manage my stress and am getting headaches, sensation of painful lump in the throat, racing heart, insomnia, all the old symptoms of panic again.  I want to go back to the doctor, but there are sooooo many symptoms I don't want him to think I am "crazy" (haha...).  How can I address these issues with ...

I am wondering if anyone else out there has suffered from crippling panic attacks.  I can get them in crowded places, escalators, etc.  My biggest issue comes from driving.  I can't handle lots of traffic but sometimes even in light traffic is becomes a problem.  I've tried counseling with no progress and tried medication, but I don't like to drive with some of the meds the prescribe as they can be dangerous as well.  I avoid interstates at all costs.  ...

Depression And AnxietyJan 13, 2011
Has anyone been actually treated for depression and anxiety?  I have been going to a psychologist, but it seems like it's going to take forever to make any progress!  I get just as frustrated and panicky knowing I have to go to an appointment as I do sitting at home wishing for work! Just wondering if anyone has had any success with therapy, or if anyone has any real life suggestions or stories about how they overcame this illness.  I've been feeling helpless and at the ...

Semi-controlled on medications.  Nothing like this has ever happened to me before.  I had to go to the ER because I had so much anxiety I thought I would have a heart attack.  They just gave me Zofran and valium and sent me home, telling me to follow up with ENT and/or neurology.   I had a CT (negative) and an MRI, which I had to repeat because they wanted to get a closer look at my pineal gland.  Now, I'm terrified I might have some kind of a brain tumor becau ...

Cat AttackMay 18, 2012
What would you do?  Our cat attacked my husband tonight, and now he wants to get rid of the cat.  We found the cat seven years ago in a park.  He was really dehydrated and had an injured leg.  We took him home and brought him inside.  The vet thought he was probably around a year old at that time.  He also was not neutered.  My husband refused to get the cat neutered because he was not a kitten, so he said it wouldn't help with spraying, etc. and it would ...
