my wonderful eggplant

Posted: Jul 27, 2010

It was worth it-- all the watering and bug-picking and waiting-- I just ate the first eggplant off my first eggplant bush ever! Sauteed in olive oil, basil, salt and pepper, and then simmered in tomato sauce. Yummy! I love my garden. Next year I'll have two eggplant bushes!

could you teach me to garden? - I failed

I planted 2 tomato plants, one kept turning yellow and the other grew rotten tomatoes. They were still green and had soft brown spots.

Then, I tried 1 strawberry plant and it produced only 3 strawberries about the size of a dime. Super little.

My pepper plant only gave me 1 pepper, about the size of a ping pong ball...

What am I doing wrong?

Patience and keeping your eyes and ears open, I guess? I've had laughable results for two years, this year is the first time my garden has actually DONE anything! But over the "bad" years, I learned about compost, too much rain, blossom end-rot, flea beatles, not enough rain, not enough sunshine, soil deficiency, pH testing, transplanting mistakes, and pruning! My "gardener mentor" was never very concerned about my garden disasters ("those things happen"). I kept reading and researching here and there, and finally had enough know-how and the cooperation of the weather, and now oh my gosh, an actual EGGPLANT!! My first peppers are doing horribly, but I think their container is too small, and I used cheap potting soil. That's a lesson for next year's planting! Just keep at it. Get a good, basic gardening book to read during the winter when you are not stressed about garden results. Google "yellow tomatoes." A green thumb is not an inborn talent, it comes with time!

We had tomato blight for two years and lost all our tomatoes. - Backwards Typist

This year we have blossom end rot. We never used to have these problems. DH planted 70 tomato plants this year.

Last year, we had so many jalapenos and other hot peppers, but this year he didn't plant any. Regular peppers didn't do well last year either so DH didn't plant any this year (wish he would have). Onions didn't fare well, but radishes and carrots did okay.

Our yellow beans aren't looking as good as last year. Seeds in the beans are really large. Onions are looking decent this year.

First year I planted an herb garden. Basil (3 kinds) looks really good. Sage is okay but half didn't germinate even though they were new seed. Parsley looks wimpy as does the dill. Nothing else came up...cilantro, coriander, savory, chives, and others.
tomatoes - what do you do with 70 plants?

Sell, give away or can them?? I had blossom end rot last year (no, not me personally), because of too much rain. I've heard low calcium also causes the problem. I was told to rotate the plants this year, but I only have a few spots in my yard that get enough sun, so I dug loads of dirt and replaced it with new dirt, including lots of veggie compost. Lovely tomatoes this year!

My Most Wonderful Granddaughter's B'day PartyFeb 07, 2012
I can hardly believe my granddaughter will be turning five next month.  My daughter asked me what foods would be a good idea.  There will be ice-cream and cake, of course, but I've drawn a blank, as most kids won't eat more than 2-3 foods anyway, at least my kids wouldn't at that age.  Anyone with any suggestions would be most appreciated! ...

Wonderful Nature ShowNov 16, 2011
Tonight I just finished watching "My Life As a Turkey" on Public Broadcasting.   Anyone who loves animals and nature would love this.  It is about a man who found and incubated wild turkey eggs, raised them and lived with them in the forrest for 1 1/2 years.  This was truly an inspirational film and so beautifully demonstrates the bond between man and the animal kingdom.   I would be interested to hear what others thought of this wonderful story.    T ...

John F. Kennedy, from inauguration address:  We observe today not a victory of a party, but a celebration of freedom- symbolizing an end, as well as a beginning - signifying renewal, as well as change.  For I have sworn before you and almighty God the same solemn oath our forebears described nearly a century and three-quarters ago. You should really stop and think what he's doing to a lot of people OUT OF SPITE! Yes, that's what I said....you never saw this happen during shutdowns before. You know about the war memorials being shut down. Here's another spiteful nove that was made. Yesterday, I read that the park service was told they are supposed to make it as miserable as they can on the people. Well, they're doing a good job. Since they'are forcing people out of their homes, then what's goo ...

Real people and some animation. The Disney movie company just keeps churning out wonderful movies. I went to the show because I love bling of any kind, loved the color of Cate Blanchett's hair (really gold) and was totally amazed by the movie and loved it. I consider it more of a chick show, my friend and her daughter went with me and we all loved it. Check it out for a really good show for kids as well as adults. ...

Vent About My Hubby During This Wonderful Holiday Season ... (sm)Dec 23, 2010
Every year at Christmas my hubby is able to take two weeks off, which is wonderful for him but is beginning to stink for me.  By the time his vacation is over I will be extremely resentful towards him and I hate that.  In years past he has always done everything he can to help me out while I am working, cleaning the house, wrapping presents, picking up little odd and end gifts, etc.  However, this year all he has done is lay on the couch and sleep after sleeping until 11:00 every ...
