Wish me luck. i'm cooking for Thanksgiving for the first time in years

Posted: Nov 19, 2010

I used to make Thanksgiving dinner for 15 people, friends and family, until the kids left home and mom and her boyfriend died, and friends moved away. Then there was just 2 of us. With my job, working Thanksgiving day was no big deal and I always worked that day, so DH would order takeout turkey dinners  from a local restaurant so I wouldn't have to worry about cooking.

This year, there was a good price on turkey. Since I am not working, I decided to make dinner.  I paid $.48/pound for one store brand and had a $4 coupon off a Butterball. So I have 2 turkeys, both 12 pounders. We are going to smoke the one turkey after hunting season but I'll be cooking the other one this year. (DH thinks I'm nuts for doing so).

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I remember how I used to make the dinner. I will pare down the menu, not making mashed potatoes or candied sweet potatoes (sniff) or 3 veggies along with potato filling and stuffing, just potato filling, a veggie and cranberry sauce, and I'm going to make an apple pie. (DH hates cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie. Pumpkin pie is the only thing I'll miss.)  Then I'll have the problem of leftover turkey since DH only likes it once a year (working on that-lol).

It may be a disaster or it may be okay. Only time will tell.  Wish me luck?!

It's helpful for me to prepare some things the day before, or even two days before, like the cranberry sauce, fruit pie, dinner rolls, dressing, etc., anything that will keep well. Ask your loved ones to bring different food items so you don't have to fix it. This frees up Thanksgiving day, you won't be slaving in the kitchen, you can relax and enjoy time with your loved ones. That's what I'm doing this year for the first time in many, and I can't wait!

Good luck! - Mmmmm

I am sure you will do just fine with whatever you make. Personally, I would be happy with just the yams and cranberry sauce. Yes, I'm weird. Since my mom and I like different pies, I am making 1/2 of a pumpkin and 1/2 of an apple--not at the same time--using a special pie pan with a divider. Best of luck with your dinner and all that leftover turkey you will have. : )

small children who will really only eat sweet potato casserole, bread and green been casserole (no turkey), my dad came to visit and said that he would rather have ham for Thanksgiving, so I think that this year, instead of the normal prime rib on Christmas, I am going to do a turkey for Christmas when there will be people around to eat it and a small ham for Thanksgiving. My favorite part of having ham is making homemade macaroni and cheese from the leftovers. I am really looking forward to it, but sad that I am missing out on leftover turkey sandwiches with stuffing and cranberry sauce all smooshed in with sourdough bread. Looking forward to Christmas for many many reasons this year. My best Christmas present is that my husband should be home just in time! :) Good luck with your Turkey, Backwards Typist, and I hope you have great holidays this year!

Kendra, that's my favorite part too--the sandwiches! - Hayseed

JUST like you described too! All the fixin's "smooshed" into the bread and washed down with a huge glass of milk or eggnog! Probably 5000 calories in one sitting but frig it!
:-D

I'll send you some turkey. I will have plenty left over. LOL - Backwards Typist

I checked the size of both turkeys and they're both 12 pounds. So, I'll probably be all turkeyed out in 2 days.

I AM looking forward to this year's dinner, but it will probably be my last. I don't know why I opened my big mouth because the local restaurant does a fantastic delicious meal including desert, for much less money than what I'm spending. I guess I just wanted to do it one more time to see if I could.

choirboy face for the cameras. In a televised meeting at the White House with President-Elect Donald Trump, Obama engaged in his usual kabuki theatrics, fooling no one. We have become so accustomed to Obama's passive-aggressive antics that it wasn't even surprising that he and Michelle skipped the traditional photo op featuring the outgoing and incoming first couples together. The pair proved once again they are small, petty people. Well, leftists are all about making statements vi ...

with the cooks tasting their dish and then using the same utensil again and again sticking back down into the food? So Bored With Cooking The Same Things Over And OverDec 18, 2010
Sad to say that I end up cooking the same five or six things every week. I think my taste buds have atrophied. Anyone have any ideas for something really good (also fairly fast and easy to make)? My husband doesn't like things that are too spicy (100% Norwegian--family story was that his mother still had the same spices she got for her wedding 50 years on the spice rack ) but I'm looking for a change. ...

director for a time, and finishing a distinguished career as the Agency's Deputy Director. There are few truly "must read" books out there, but along with Lawrence Wright's The Looming Tower, Morell's new The Great War of Our Time is one of them. Combine Wright's and Morell's books and you have a history of the rise of Islamist fanaticism vis-a-vis the United States from the end of World War II to the present. Everyone running for president should read both books, but ...

Cooking Shows, Who Do You Love? Hate?Feb 14, 2013
The Pioneer Woman is my favorite. All her foods, casseroles, desserts look absolutely delicious, full of flavor, rich and wonderful. All her shows have some sort of fun theme and she just looks like she really enjoys herself. I also love her ranch, her family, and her life-style in general. A very comforting show about simple pleasures of family and good food. My least favorite is Trisha's Southern Kitchen. I have seen her cook with Paula, and I enjoyed her then, but when she spun ...

ThanksgivingOct 10, 2011
I know it's a little early but i'm a planner.  What do you usually do at Thanksgiving?  This will be new for me as it is now just me and my 10-y/o son.  In the past he'd usually go hunting with his dad and I'd cook/bake all day.  They'd come home with any "wayward" buddies for dinner.  My parents live 4 hours away and I'm not really too keen on just sitting around staring at eachother or the TV (as what happens with any other visit). Any id ...

So How Was Everybody's Thanksgiving?Dec 01, 2013
On Thanksgiving I cooked for my cats, then worked and ran out of work after 4 hours and watched TV and took PTO.  We got together the day after and I spent the day with my sister's family.  I can't believe how big my great-great-nieces and nephews are getting.  The oldest is 4, the youngest is just under 7 months.  I have a hard time believing how grown up everybody is and realizing we (my sister and I) aren't even the old ones anymore, the kids ...

If you're spending it with your relatives (as you might do every year and sometimes dread doing so), try to look at them in a new light and be grateful you still have your family. If you have no family, cook a meal and invite a neighbor or someone who also has no family to share your meal with you. It might wind up being your best Tha ...
