10 killed - shooting at Oregon's Umpqua Community College

(CNN)Preliminary information indicates 10 people were killed and more than 20 others injured in a shooting at Oregon's Umpqua Community College on Thursday, said Oregon State Police spokesman Bill Fugate.

Douglas County Commissioner Chris Boice told CNN that the shooter is in custody. It was not immediately clear whether the shooter was injured.

ATF agents were on the scene and canine teams are en route to search for explosives, fire arms casings and ammunition, a spokesman said.

TOO MANY GUNS! People in the 60s didn't have this many guns. My father had guns and frankly, he was the only parent I knew that did.

Perhaps if you lived out in the boonies you had a "gun club" and carried them around on the bus. The rest of the citified folks didn't carry their guns around and for the most part didn't have near the number of guns and accessibility and "gun culture" as there is now. It isn't evil, it is availability....unless you consider the NRA evil...yes, they are evil.

They used to have shootings from towers in the 60s.

There was a school shooting in my state and in fact was the father of a classmate of mine who moved to another school and his father was principal there.

Most didn't make the news in those days. They are so common place now, but I think it does not help to have ISIS to worry about. Life seems not to mean much to people as it used to.

I just hope this is not a way of life and that we cannot go out and feel safe even in a small town like this town was

and I think his wife. There was an incident back around the turn of the 20th century where a guy dynamited an elementary school. Those things happened but were rare. Not like today. I think it's spiritual.

near where I lived, a mall I went to from time to time, Springfield Mall, October 30, 1985.

On October 30, 1985, Sylvia Seegrist, a 25-year-old paranoid schizophrenic, went on a shooting spree in the mall, killing three and wounding seven others until she was disarmed by other shoppers.

We were all shocked needless to say, very scary, I was 19 then. When I was 17, (11/1983)outside a mall in the parking lot, North Philadelphia (Cheltenham Mall) I witnessed a man kill his girlfriend (shot her in the head) then then kill himself, so it was happening back in the 80s for sure, not as prevalent as it seems to be today but it still happened, just did not have the exposure it has today due to the internet.

Forgive me for saying this but too bad the shooter is still alive. Now the government gets to spend money on his incarceration. Wondering what the story is here. If you want to die, fine. You don't need to take out innocent people with you.

People just started school September 28th.

We have to find a way to stop these things from happening. I don't have the answer, however.
