So I changed my phone number to get away from all the

Posted: Jul 18, 2014

spam calls (a lot of those 100222 type numbers) and I get 3 in 2 days from Midland!!  I have had my number on the Do Not Call list, which of course does no good.  I have a net10 phone and wonder if anyone knows of an app or something I can get to stop these irritating, harrassing calls!!  I guess I may have to bite the bullet and get a more expensive phone that blocks those calls.  I sure will if I have no alternatives!

;

I just hang up on them. They are invading YOUR space. - burns me up

[ In Reply To ..]
I sometimes will say this:

"Please do not take this personally, but I am going to hang up now." I don't wait for a response. I just hang up.

It's very freeing.

Many times, there is a pause after you answer the phone, and that is your sign that your voice is necessary to trigger a connection. The pause is when I hang up. I immediately do a *69 (land line only) to see if it was someone I really know, and call them back if so. I don't have a cell phone. My number is supposed to be unlisted. HAHA. I get 3 telemarketers a day.

If I am in a really peeved mood, I will politely say, "I'm sorry I don't have any extra money. In fact, I can't make my rent. Can you help me out?" That's enough to get them to hang up on YOU!

Turn the tables and see how they like it.

I actually purchased an airhorn and have used it until - sm -OP

it is about empty. They call right back. I would hope busting their eardrums would help, but I guess nothing will. I have told them I am going to sue if they call again, I am having the calls traced, everything and STILL they call. *&^%!!!

I have a scripted answer for those times when - I forget, and pick up the phone during - sm

the daytime. As soon as my sales call radar kicks in, I just say, as fast as humanly possible:

"Thanks-but-I'm-not-interested-'bye!" and then hang up as they're saying, "But....!"

that's awful - nm

What's awful? I wish their eardrums would bust. - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
It would serve them right. They stop at nothing and deserve nothing less.
wishing physical harm to someone is more awful - you are wrong
[ In Reply To ..]
They don't deserve the physical harm you wish upon them. You deserve to be re-educated about your desire to physically bully someone because they irritate you.

punishing and harming others is ill - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
So...let's get this straight. INSTEAD of not answering numbers you don't recognize, and INSTEAD of just hanging up, you went out and PURCHASED a device to intentionally harm another person? Hon, that's ill.
Dear Abby suggested this 30 years ago. sm - Feather Tuscadero

Although it may have been a whistle rather than an airhorn. I remember reading it as a kid.
Dear Abby was not wishing to burst someone's ear - as the other poster did

Umm, Yeah, she was. She suggested blowing a whistle into the phone. sm - Feather Tuscadero

That's totally the same to me!
I'm not advocating either option, but it sure isn't anything new. Abby was a bit of a kook herself.

When I answer the phone, I usually say "Sargent so and so State Police" how can I help you. They hang up so fast, the phone is smoking. Also many years ago, I was at a rooming house with other women and a friend of mine who worked night shift, got woken up with one of these calls. Now the woman who ran the house had a poodle named George. When the caller asked to speak to the man of the house, my friend said hold on and then called, George there's someone who wants to speak to the man of the house. Well, the dog started barking and friend said her ear hurt the caller hung up so fast! Needless to say, we really didn't get any more calls after that. State police barracks works real well too. or the state morgue: Which stiff do you want to speak to.

I set the phone down. Let them continue their spiel. - In about 5 minutes or so I hang it up.(sm)

[ In Reply To ..]
Sometimes I pretend "she no live here no more" or pretend I no speak Inglais. Sometimes I bark like a dog. Sometimes I yell, Honey, it's for you, then set it down. Let them wait. They waste my time, I'll waste theirs. At least I can have some fun doing it.

I have done EVERY conceivable thing - to stop these calls

[ In Reply To ..]
and it doesn't seem possible to get rid of them. It's awful. They call all day and evening. When I worked a night shift and slept during the day, I had to take my phone off hook so the calls wouldn't interrupt my sleep. Everything about technology seems to have drawbacks.

It's happened to me, lasted for weeks! I set the - ringer on the lowest type

Has opened the door and given an invatation to scammers. I have been the victim of identity theft twice in the past 14 months. The first time was someone using my information including SS # to file a fraudulent tax return, which profited them over $2,000. The second time in June was a person in Tampa Florida (never even been to Florida), who opened an account at a furniture store in Tampa using my info. I saw a documentary once on TV about a year ago and the guy was laughing, talking about how he made $16,000 in one morning with fraudulent tax returns on his lap top, while he watched cartoons with his kids. You are correct. There are definite drawbacks. All they have to do is hack into major corporations, health care facilities, etc. to get personal information, and go from there.

Me two, I've been the victim of identify theft 3 times, - once someone used my SS to

I'm not in a position to change phone numbers now - but there is one that calls daily for like the last YEAR - WHY????

They have a long spiel about credit card rates and I practically have the whole thing memorized, that is, at least the beginning part, before I delete their message.

There are 2 others that are pretty regular also, for MONTHS, even though I have told them "not interested."

I googled a bit for you. I have an android and cant live - without my call blocking feature. sm

[ In Reply To ..]
I'm not going to post the forum website and get banned, but will cut & copy some of it for you.

go to google play store, download something called easyblacklist?

or another called Advanced Mobile Care?

Mr. Number may help as well.

or "AVG Antivirus FREE app. It has a Privacy feature which allows you to block selective calls. It can block/quarantine text messages too, but from my testing you still get charged for them with the TF Androids."

I can try to send an email response to you with this website.

Or, call your carrier and ask if they have a way to block numbers. Verizon only allows 5 at a time and they expire, so I said screw it and bought an app with unlimited numbers.

Turning ringer down or changng the tone did nothing to help or stop the calls. Blocking app is the answer to my prayers. I now have peace of mind, privacy and sanity, and control over my phone that I pay for.

Good luck.

Thank you!! I checked and my net10 does not have - sm

anything to block numbers, but I am going to check into an app to do it. I bet it will save my sanity. I would love an email, too:) Thanks again!

of checking google play. I got a new free app so hopefully that will help:)

During the day when I'm working, there's really - no one I want to talk to anyway, so - sm

I screen all my calls using my answer-machine. The cool thing about that is that most sales and robo-calls will automatically hang up as soon as the phone is picked up by your machine. ;)

Not a problem here - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
I put my phone numbers on the federal Do Not Call list. It is free and it works. The only calls you will get after that are political announcements, charities, and maybe a couple other things, but no marketing. When you do get a marketing call, you can report them. If it is a human on the call, just tell them the number is on the federal Do Not Call list and they will hang up.

Many callers now use predictive autodialers (robo dialing). When you answer, it knows the number is a real, in-service line and it calls it more often. Some companies sell lists of "good" numbers, making your problem worse.

In many cases now, you aren't even annoying a human with your air-horns and yelling, because the calls are handled with very realistic voice technology.

Changing your number is dandy, but you will be in the same boat within a month if you do not take appropriate action. Register your number (bothland and cell lines) on the federal Do Not Call list at https:// www donotcall gov. After 30 days, begin reporting any marketing calls.

You will need to subscribe to caller id to do this. When you have that, do not answer any call from an unknown, unrecognized, or id-blocked number. Ever. Answering them just confirms that you have a real number.

Seriously, if you cannot stop yourself from snatching up the phone, you will continue to have a problem. You have to stop answering it. If you get a call you recognize, fine, otherwise wait and call them back.

There are also telezappers. Look up the wikipedia entry on that. There are some for sale on Amazon. I had one for years. It worked. Their effectiveness with robodialers may be less effective now, but if you are being tortured, it might be worth a try.

I think you will have good luck with the national DO Not Call list, though.

Another possible ploy to use with local companies like cruise and travel agencies is to warn them that you will bill them if they call again, send them a letter informing them of your rates, and then do it. Yes, send them a bill for the call. List the calls, the duration, the charge for the call itself (cell minutes, etc.) and your time, a service fee, etc.

Not sure what makes you think I have not registered - sm

I have a landline and was on the Do Not Call List. I finally had to change my number, it was the absolute best thing I did. I'm not familiar with Net 10 but some things I learned - when you get a nuisance call, request to have your number removed from their calling list. If they continue to call, you can report them to the FTC. Be careful when you sign up for stuff on line and they ask for your phone number, many places sell your info and once you are on one list it seems that everyone has your phone number, use a bogus number or one of your old numbers if needed. I don't know if this helps but it worked for me.

The only thing you can do is put a restriction on your phone to only receive calls from people who are listed in your phone book. So make sure the person who keeps calling you is not listed in your phone book.

This will work. But if someone wants to call you that you do not have their number listed in your phone book they will not be able to call you either.

Go to the Settings
Then Phone settings
Then Security enter in your unlock code( usually the last 4 digits of your phone number, unless you changed it, or 0000 or 1234)
Then Restriction
Then Incoming and press on or phone book only or what ever else is listed there.

When the person stops calling you and you think they are going to stop permanently then you can go back threw the steps and turn the restriction off.

Thank you, but my specific phone does not support that - nm
