Rude rude people on the phone

Posted: Oct 4, 2010

I stopped answering my phone years ago, because I was tired of the sales calls and the collection bureaus calling trying to get in touch with anyone that has the same last name as I do.  I have caller ID and I only pick up when I know who is on the other end.  Well recently my sister called and said someone was going to be contacting me in regards to something to do with my mom's health.  So I said fine.  Figured I'd start picking up again until that was done.  So...I picked up and someone asked for me.  I said this is she and he told me his name and what company was from (my sister never did give me the name of the company), and he proceeded to tell me he was calling about an outstanding balance of over $400 to some credit card.  I said you have the wrong number.  His words were "No, you are --- and you have an outstanding balance on this credit card".  I told him no I don't, I don't have a credit card with that name, and my name is very common and he has the wrong person", and I said it as rude as he was talking to me.  He then proceeded to tell me, "No, you owe this money".  I ended up hanging up on him.  I was so ticked.  Now I know why I don't answer the phone unless I know who is it.  Going to tell my sister she better take the information because unless I know that name and number of who is going to call I'm not answering my phone.  Don't these people realize there are other people out there with same names and when you have the name of Smith, Jones, etc (the common ones, chances are there are more than one person with that name).  If I had thought of it I would have asked him where the charge was made to verify it wasn't me, and if he was nicer I would have explained that I know at least 4 other people with the same name as me.  But he was rude so he got back that same rudeness. - Okay, just had to vent.  That really bugged me.

And about the people with the same name, it's not even just the common names like Smith and Jones. My maiden name is a pretty uncommon one, but with the Internet search capabilities I have seen that there are several with my same first and last name, even same middle initial in some cases. Reminds me of a friend who had some concern, about what I don't recall, but stated, "There aren't that many Travis' in this state," which was funny in itself (because he was not including his last name), but I later found I think it was about six people (maybe more) in this state with the same first and last name as him, in which his name is not a super common one like Smith or Jones, but also not as rare as my maiden name.

How 'bout this for same name game - 1mt

I do not have a common last name at all and my first name is not spelled as common as some. I use yahoo for my instant message and will occasionally, but not often, get yahoo mail. So the couple times I got yahoo mail, I glanced at it and just deleted it. Well, one day I got 2 messages that I looked at closer before opening and it looked like a normal e-mail from an individual who was sending these e-mail messages to several people, as if sent from their address book. So I decided to open and read one and that's exactly what it was...someone sending this personal message to me and several others about a school copy machine or something like that. I responded to her informing her that I didn't know why she was sending me this message and I didn't know who she was. She replied back saying that it was my mother and I better adjust my e-mail settings. Well, my mother passed 5 yrs ago so I knew it wasn't her. I, of course, responded back to let her know that she most certainly was not my mother and she had the wrong person. Come to find out, her daughter has the same married name as I do and lives in another state, but obviously had the same yahoo address as me or something. How weird that was!! She apologized and I never got another e-mail from her.

Debt collectors - have some borderline illegal practices

[ In Reply To ..]
With what has happened to the economy lately, there have been a lot more debts that have gone unpaid and the bottom feeder debt collectors have come out in droves. They don't care at all that they might have a person with the same name. All they know is they have SOMEONE with the correct name and they are going to call and call.

One thing I would do for sure is get a copy of your credit report and make sure that everything on there is something you recognize, just to be on the safe side to make sure that they don't have the rest of your information somehow and they don't put something on there that doesn't need to be on there.

I abhor debt collectors whether I owe the money or not! - SM

They are just rotten to the core. My ex-brother in law went to prison and left some unpaid credit card bills. I had a very unique last name when I was married so it wasn't hard for a creditor to do a little investigating and find my number. One particular creditor could not grasp the fact that while I had used to be related to my ex-bil, I was no longer related to him, he had NEVER lived with me, and that he is in prison. This creditor was relentless, telling me he didn't have to stop calling until I proved that my ex-bil was in prison. He would call me by my ex-bil's ex-wife's name to see if I corrected him. I finally called the attorney general and basically said if a credit card company can investigate enough to come up with my number in trying to locate someone, they can get on the department of correction website and verify if someone is in prison. It's FREE! The calls stopped.

When I divorced, my ex had an outstanding credit card bill in his name only that I was refusing to pay. The creditor would call me and try to scare me saying I was responsible for my spouses bills and I could be sued and I said "I'll take my chances." He then wanted my work number and wanted me to "verify" my address. I said I don't work. I said "I don't work." And he very rudely said "how do you people live?" I said "If I told you, I'd have to kill you." and hung up.

I do everything I can to mess with creditors. They are the dregs of humanity.

You made me laugh with the "if I told you I'd have to kill you." - Happy MT Robin

I think it was a scammer...sm - my 2 cents

[ In Reply To ..]
I read about this kind of con. They try to high-pressure people into paying this so-called debt by credit card or bank account over the phone. They push really hard, hoping someone just gives up and gives them the info the scammer wants. Apparently they hope to get a senior citizen, who tends to be less confrontational and willing to do whatever it takes to keep the peace. FYI: If anyone gets a call like this, get the company name that has the outstanding balance and tell the person you will call that company yourself, then hang up.

My mom is not doing well.  I hope she makes it through the winter!  All my siblings know, so when they come to visit, it's only for a few hours (like 1 hour and 59 minutes, I mean, not very long!) at a time, they come in the morning, then again in the evening, and even then, my mom will excuse herself and go upstairs and lay down and take her blood pressure.  Because "it's too much excitement."  You can look at her and see she is all stressed out and tense and has a ...

My Mom And Her Cell PhoneJan 07, 2015
