Question about "post neutering" a cat and acceptance

Posted: Oct 29, 2011

We took our male kitty in to be neutered.  Before he went in he was a "mammas boy".  Mom loved him, cleaned him, played with him and he still was nursing.  He has 4 sisters.  He went in a couple days ago, neutered, rabies shot, vaccine, etc (which we hated to do, but thought it would be best for him).  He came home that night and it was like watching the movie "The Thing".  All his sisters and mom hissed at him.  2 were afraid and would not go near him.  We figured it was all the smells of the place and the vaccines.  Poor little guy was so lonely.  Yesterday they still hissed at him, but by afternoon he was playing and a couple joined in playing with him and one wrestled around last night with him, but not too hard.  Mother still hissed.  Today all the kittens are okay with him.  Still not like before he went in, but they are all okay with each other, but mother is still hissing and growling at him.  I feel bad for the little guy cos he keeps trying to be with his mom and she wants no part of him.  Does anyone know if she'll finally be accepting and start playing and cleaning him like she used to or how long or if there is something I can do to help her get to be with him again.  I've been rubbing his fir with cat nip (wet my hand and rub the plant leaves and get my hand full of the smell and rub his fur and massage and pet him hoping the mother will smell him and start caring for him again.  of course he just loves to be pet and massaged :-)  I just wanted to know if things will go back the way they were.  This is the second full day of him being home and just don't know how long it will take or even if it will go back. Anyone have any experience with this?  Hope I didn't drone on.  I just feel so bad for the little guy.

Does he have the cone on? - lovemykitties

I have a brother and sister. When they came home from being spayed and neutered with those cones on, they hissed at each other for a few days. Then, when we finally took those cones off, they eventually went back to loving each other again! :)

Don't worry. It's normal. - sm

There's a saying: Dogs remember; cats forget. I'm not a vet, and I don't know how true it is, but whenever I take 1 cat to the vet and bring them home, the others usually seem quite displeased to see them return. I think it's a combination of the various smells as well as their short memory, and they start to get a little used to things at home without the other cat around... it's almost like a reintroduction process (with someone they kinda remember but they smell pretty funny). Things should be back to normal anywhere from a few hours to a few days depending on how high strung the other kitties are. I've been through this many times with my cats over the years... they get over it.

As far as the mom, she may be starting the weaning process. This sometimes can be really hard to watch, but again it's normal. The poor little kitties will try to play or nurse, only to get swatted and hissed at, or mom will just get up and walk away. If your little guy is old enough to be neutered, he's old enough to be weaned. You just have to let it happen... they'll wind up getting along, but it will just be a different relationship.

And don't hate the fact that you had him neutered... you did the best thing for him and probably increased his life span. Neutered cats tend to stray less or try to escape the house if they're strictly indoor cats, and every male cat I've had became complete lovebugs once "snipped." You'll probably find him being much more affectionate with people. Plus, their urine doesn't stink as badly as if left un-neutered.

Good luck.

Awww.. how about putting some vanila on both - him and his mama? SM

I have heard of this working when introducing new kitties. Other than that, you already mentioned every I would have suggested could be causing the problem, the smells from the vet, etc. Please post again when things hopefully get better.

I have never heard of neutering a cat - while still nursing

could using catnip be part of the problem? - sereneone

We had a BIG tom once that had sired all of the cats we had except the mom of course. They only had the 1 litter before we got them fixed, thought both of them were still too young, surprise, surprise. My mother had gotten the female kitten for our daughter and the male was a stray bundle of fluff that wandered into husband's workplace. Anyway, we couldn't let any of the kitties have catnip because every time Dad would get catnip (tried several times just in case it was a fluke), he'd turn from a sweet loving boy into Mr. Hyde and beat the you know what out of his boys.

I am surprised that he was neutered while still nursing - never heard of that

My vet wouldn't neuter our male or female before the six-month mark. Their little gonads are way too small prior to that.

I got a male kitty from the Humane Society - anon

He was neutered and microchipped before we got him at 6 weeks old. He was teeny then. It did absolutely nothing to stunt his growth or adversely affect him. He is the biggest lovebug ever.

We do have barn cats that will nurse until their mothers absolutely forbid it. We have had barn "kittens" that were close to a year old trying to nurse off of another barn mama. Some will let them, some won't. It's always the males that try too.

I am on a job search (or was until last night). I had been trying for FT, PT, whatever comes along for the time being until I can find something stable outside the home. I received two invitations today to schedule interviews for FT positions. Now I need to know how to politely decline these so I'm not burning any bridges in case I end up needing them again. Now the reason I need to decline and my question. Last night I found out that I will be moving my grandmother into my home to take ca ...

After Reading The Jesus Is Coming Post And Then Hare Krishna Mantra Post...Apr 21, 2010
I was wondering exactly what kind of "faith" board this is. The poster, Catherine, in the Jesus is Coming thread felt this was the "wrong forum" for posting one's religious beliefs while another posterior in that thread says that this "faith" board is meant to be all inclusive meaning persons of all faiths can post their beliefs here. I guess I wrongly assumed that the use of the word "faith" meant Christianity as it is my belief that Christianity is the only valid belief system worshiping ...

I'm always facinated at some people who think all social problems and situations are so black and white.Abortion is here to stay, whether it's legal or not, just like it's always been an option when a woman finds herself facing the impossible situation of an unwanted pregnancy. Cat Question Aug 05, 2011
Don't know if you remember my last posts awhile back about a stray cat we started feeding and took care, gave her shelter for the winter and she had kittens.  We've taken the kittens in and adore them all.  Now...here she is 3 or 4 months later, every once in awhile I'll get a glimpse of her nursing them.  Vet told us milk has to be dried up before they can fix her.  However, she is a stray and she has been going out walking around the neighborhood like she has ...

QuestionMar 22, 2010
Okay, here is a question that I have not seen come up here.  While watching news today this just crossed my mind.  If the government sets an insurance rate you have to pay based upon what you make per year, do they take into account all your other bills, and that sometimes as ICs we don't get any work coming in at times, and then what they set is more than what you can afford (i.e. more money than your paycheck and you still have to pay all your bills).  As ICs I'm sure ...
