Question about new fish

Posted: May 21, 2011

I just got a fish today.  I haven't had fish since I was a child.  It is one of those Siamese fighting fish.  My problem is this:  I just got a little fishbowl since I wasn't too sure how great I would be keeping a fish alive.  I have a cat who for the most part just looks in the bowl and watches the fish.  But my husband has watched him stick his paw in the bowl a few times.  Will the cat's paw contaminate the water?  Should I change the water since the cat has put his paw in it or am I being too paranoid?  He is an indoor cat but I am still not too sure.  Obviously we are putting the fish somewhere out of reach when we go to bed, but I just dont want to wake up to a dead fish because my cat put his paw in the bowl and I didn't clean the bowl.

Thanks!!!!

Try cat-proofing the fish bowl by placing a circle of cheesecloth over the bowl and securing with a big elastic band. Or, use Saran wrap with holes punched through.

Also, add a solution that dechlorinates the water and then add your fish.

A mini-aquarium with a pump that oxygenates the water extends the life of fish.

Fish are so restive to look at. I had beta fish, which need to be au solitaire, and one of which I managed to keep alive for one and a half years. One evening, he was swimming like an Olympian, so fast, and around and around. The next morning, I found him belly-up. I cried.

I don't think you need to worry about the water being dirty from your cat's paw - I think you need to worry about him catching the fish. I do believe he's "goin' fishin'.

LOL, I'd worry more about kitty going fishin' than kitty's dirty paws.

Wall hanging beta bowl - RubySoho

I bought a beta a few years ago and found the most awesome "bowl" for it. It was a half-round and actually hung on the wall. It came with a little set of rocks and I think a couple of little plants. Anyway, I think I got it at PetSmart or PetCo. Greatest thing ever, because I could hang it up at eye level and not have to worry about the bowl getting knocked over or Mr. Kitty deciding to go fishing. I don't know if they still make them or not, but I loved mine. It was a great conversation piece, too.

Anyone Taking Fish Oil? How Much Is Too Much?Jan 11, 2011
Anyone know about fish oil?  I have been taking it 2 gm a day for awhile, but been reading about autoimmune issues and inflammation.  A book on a Paleo diet suggests 15 gm a day to help with inflammation and this just seems like a lot.  I have gone up to 3 tid and feel better, but afraid to go higher.  Anybody taking this much?  I also take vit D and magnesium 200 bid and nothing else. ...

Teach A Man To FishAug 26, 2012
Give a man a fish, you feed him for one day. Teach him to fish, you feed him for life. Destroy the economy and make him desperate enough for a job and he will gratefully work at minimum wage in your fish cannery for life. Destroy the public education system and you'll have his sons and daughters, too. Forever.   Quote from a friend. ...

Any Fish-cooker-uppers Out There? HALP!Mar 05, 2010
Here's the deal. I'm a part-time Mr. Mom. My wife and I both work and we split the household chores down the middle even-steven. Cooking, cleaning, whatever. We each take care of laundering and ironing our own clothes, etc. (It's the way I was raised by working parents, if you think this is odd.) So, the way our schedule works out, I'm off work earlier and cook dinner most of the time. Nothing fazes me except FISH, and my wife doesn't do it any better, but we bot ...

Poor Renal Patient Smells Like FishMar 05, 2013
He said: "She has a fistula in her left upper extremity." VR wrote: "She has a fish odor." Can you imagine if that wasn't corrected and left as is, and another doctor comes along and says, "Tell me about your fish odor." I had another report today where the dictator had momentarily stopped speaking, and VR just threw in, "He was born skinny." ...

I am making a blueberry pie to take to my stepfather tomorrow, and I thought it would like nice to use a cookie cutter in the shape of a bell and apply that piece of crust to the top of the pie.   If I use a little bit of water to attach it, will it bake to the top crust securely?  A lot of you sound like you are pretty handy in the kitchen!   The lemon sponge pie I made for Thanksgiving was wonderful.  Thanks to the person who suggested the allrecipes.com webs ...

I'm always facinated at some people who think all social problems and situations are so black and white.Abortion is here to stay, whether it's legal or not, just like it's always been an option when a woman finds herself facing the impossible situation of an unwanted pregnancy. Wishing it wasn't an option has never worked. However, when a discussion comes up about abortion, we women are strictly divided. Black and White in our opinions. This is a complicated issue. It doesn ...

Cat Question Aug 05, 2011
Don't know if you remember my last posts awhile back about a stray cat we started feeding and took care, gave her shelter for the winter and she had kittens.  We've taken the kittens in and adore them all.  Now...here she is 3 or 4 months later, every once in awhile I'll get a glimpse of her nursing them.  Vet told us milk has to be dried up before they can fix her.  However, she is a stray and she has been going out walking around the neighborhood like she has ...

QuestionMar 22, 2010
Okay, here is a question that I have not seen come up here.  While watching news today this just crossed my mind.  If the government sets an insurance rate you have to pay based upon what you make per year, do they take into account all your other bills, and that sometimes as ICs we don't get any work coming in at times, and then what they set is more than what you can afford (i.e. more money than your paycheck and you still have to pay all your bills).  As ICs I'm sure ...

May Be Having A TAH-have A QuestionJun 23, 2011
Due to huge fibroids, bilateral ovarian cysts, and a myriad of symptoms, I've been told I need a TAH.  Doctor tells me I'll be out of work 6 weeks but as I'm an MT and just sit at my desk anyway, I don't see a 6-week absence as being necessary.  Has anyone here had a TAH as an MT or with a desk job and how long was it necessary for you to be off work?    ...

Cat QuestionJun 06, 2012
One of my 2yo males has a cyst on the side of his head.  I just noticed it this morning, it's about the size of a golfball and underneath his ear.  Its not in his mouth.  He is eating and drinking fine, doesn't seem to be in any pain.  How could it have gotten this big without me seeing it? Anybody have any experience with these?  I called the vet and waiting for a call back.  I did some research and found out it is most likely benign, soft ...

E-Bay QuestionNov 19, 2013
Hi everyone, I absolutely love Swarovski Crystal, in particular their earrings. I have a couple of pairs that I paid full price for, but they are too expensive. (Earrings run from $60-$300+.) I saw that E-Bay has a really nice selection, and you can just do a Buy Now for way under market price--I'm not into the bidding thing, BTW. Thing is, how do I REALLY know it's Swarovski? Some of their jewelry is signed, and some of those posts say so, but not all their jewelry is signed ...

My family and I are selling our house and moving out of state, but our house is going to sell before we actually move, so we have to rent a house for about 6 months.  So, I went to look at a house over the weekend and was amazed!  For $1300 a month, it was a 3 bedroom house, very old, and a total wreck.  I mean, dirt everywhere (did they ever clean??), cats roaming and the smell!  Just amazing what a dump it was, which is a shame because it could be a gorgeous house.  So ...
