Pot Luck Dinners - bring the food back home when you leave?

Posted: Dec 16, 2009

When you go to a pot luck and bring something, do you bring it home when you leave?

I am from LI originally and I never saw anyone bring their food home. I originally lived on the east coast of FL and never saw people bring it home but I am on the west coast and it seems I am the only one that leaves the food for the host.

Wondering if it is a regional thing. On the east coast most people are from NY or NJ and on this coast most of the people I know are from MI or IL.

Potluck - me

I usually take a crowd-pleasing dessert, and there is rarely any left, and they are asking for the recipe. If not, I usually take it home with me because I want to make sure I get all my dishes/flatware back. I might ask the host if they want the leftovers first. I grew up in IL and now live in GA, and this is always the way I have done it no matter where I lived.

I always leave the leftovers, also. - sigh

Like the above poster, though, I always gather my dishes on the way out unless I've used disposables. I'm in eastern NC.

I don't believe region is a factor. It's the host/hostesses call. You should simply ask if they want you to leave it or take it back home.

I would worry that with a big potluck, and everyone leaving the food, that there may not been enough room for all the leftovers in the fridge, so just ask.

What we do is DIVIDE all the leftovers among everyone.

I feel like I am just leaving the host something to clean up if I leave it there. Never thought of leaving it :) I am from east coast Florida.

One thing people have done to me several times in the last few years that drives me nuts is to bring food to me when I am hosting and give it to me unprepared/uncooked, for me to cook!! I have some people bring me two cans of baked beans for me to put in my own pan and cook for the party and someone else brought me a bag of froze appetizers for me to bake! I don't see how that helps the hostess by giving her more work to do :(

How do you feel about it - as the host?

Would you want people to leave the leftovers or take them home?

I would want them to leave the lemon meringue pie, but take the green bean and dried onion casserole with them.

That's silly, to say the least, rude at best. I agree with the poster above that said divide everything up for everyone to take home.

You don't get to keep all the treats and sweets because you don't like veggies... we're not 6 anymore!

ask Santa for a sense of humor - it was obviously a joke

geesh.

Anyone Watch $10 Dinners On Food Network?Mar 09, 2012
Would this $10 meal really feed your family of 4??  I know it would not feed mine!  And where does se get these ingredientes so cheap?  Not even at our local low level food store.  And one thing that really bothers me is she says buy a bag of dried beans and cook them yourself and freeze them in portion sizes.  It is cheaper than buying the canned beans.  When once you pay for all those high prived small freezer bags, it is a lot more expensive than just buying a ca ...

So, Is Trump Going To Bring MT Jobs Back?Dec 04, 2016
He keeps bragging about manufacturing jobs, how about our jobs.   Every MT needs to send the Orange Buffoon a letter to bring our jobs back and stop off-shoring Medical Records.  Personally, I think it's all a big publicity stunt, but hey let's get him to pull one for us too.    ...

Bring Our Work Back, Trump!Jun 30, 2017
So I went to the White House website today and sent an email to President Trump regarding the predicament of MTSOs outsourcing OUR jobs to India, Pakistan, and the Philippines.  Couldn't actually include the "What is wrong with outsourcing?" post with this letter as only 2500 characters were allowed, so I did a little explaining and referred him to this website and the post in question.   If we ALL took 5 minutes out of our day to do this, do you think he'll hear us?   ...

only to find none at all on the shelves.  "WTF?" I'm thinking.  Maybe I had somehow ended up in the Twilight Zone. At the 6th store I went to, I asked what the deal was with Excedrin.  Where was it? Nobody knew or could give me an answer.  So I come home and type "Excedrin" into Google, and was shocked to learn that it's been recalled! (Along with 2 other, can't-do-without staples, No-Doz and Gas-X). Apparently it was recalled a month ago (something about t ...

I know it is the most common complaint doctors hear - and for years I have had the stressed-tired-overworked fatigue - I know how that one feels.  But this has been going on a couple of months.  I am bone tired even after I sleep a lot.  My blood work showed I am hypothyroid so I started on medicine and also some supplements for that.  But nothing seems to be helping.  I have pain/fatigue across the area of my back right at the braline.  My arms and neck feel heavy. ...

Wish Me Luck. I'm Cooking For Thanksgiving For The First Time In YearsNov 19, 2010
I used to make Thanksgiving dinner for 15 people, friends and family, until the kids left home and mom and her boyfriend died, and friends moved away. Then there was just 2 of us. With my job, working Thanksgiving day was no big deal and I always worked that day, so DH would order takeout turkey dinners  from a local restaurant so I wouldn't have to worry about cooking. This year, there was a good price on turkey. Since I am not working, I decided to make dinner.   ...

REBUTTING OBAMA’S ** ABOUT ENERGY President Obama’s discussion last night of “energy” was dishonest even by his standards. After briefly citing the nation’s energy gains under his administration, he turned to “climate change,” using a few quirky weather events as the springboard for advocating more federal regulation of the economy. Ben Cole of the Institute for Energy Research has offered a forceful and, I think, largely meritorious response to Obama& ...
