Please don't say "Happy" Memorial Day
Posted: May 30, 2011
This is a pet peeve of mine. Memorial day is to honor those who have fallen in combat for our country. It is a solemn day that demands respect. There is certainly nothing "happy" about it. I will get off of my soap box now.;

In my opinion there is nothing disrespectful about saying \"Happy\" Memorial day. We all know...your hubby is in the service, as are/were many of my relatives and friends. I am HAPPY to live in a country that people are HAPPY to serve, and many die for. It is a day to remember them, and they should be respected and I am HAPPY to do that. We are celebrating them, and celebrations are happy. So get off your soap box. Thanks for you input on EVERYTHING!
Wow--you are certainly entitled to your opinion... - Kendra

I have no issues with the barbecues, etc (there are usually veterans at the get togethers I go to who share stories), but do have a hard time with the phrase "happy" memorial day." Having been born and raised on military bases during the Vietnam war, I was exposed to the more solemn messages of the holiday. After my dad retired from service, it took a while for me to get used to the celebratory mood. My dad had to teach me that celebrating was okay, too. It still is a solemn day for me. I prefer to celebrate on Armed Forces Day.
Thank you for not attacking me personally, - Kendra

as did the poster above. I certainly have no issues with the barbecues or whatever else people want to do with the day. We are barbecuing ourselves. I, like you, only struggle with the phrase "Happy" Memorial Day. I guess that I should not post anything because whatever I type seems to anger someone, simply because it was me who posted it. I am proud of my husband and will continue to be so and I am sorry that I offended people, as it certainly was not my intent.
Keep posting. - sm aka Rainy

I do not agree with *everything* you post (that might be kind of creepy for you in a stalking kind of way), but you are certainly entitled to your opinion. You are very active on this site and I for one would miss your posts.

your thoughts on here. I've come to the conclusion that it doesn't matter what you say on here, about 95% of the time you will get negative feedback or bashing. It's sad that there are so many people in the world who like to hurt other's feelings.
I understand what you say, but I've never heard anyone - Former US Army Sergeant

say Happy Memorial Day. I'm sure they do, it's just a slip, like when I say Merry Christmas to Mr. *** and my mom says "he's jewish". I think it's just a habit. I just always hear Have a nice weekend. But then again I don't get out a lot, but emails telling me to have a nice weekend.
Totally understand what you say and agree with you. Nothing happy about it. To me Memorial Day is a very personal thing. All the soldiers who do what they do to protect our great country. My heart goes out to them and their family's and wish them well.
Thanks for posting.
I take that back - see message - Former US Army Sergeant

My dad called me tonight (he is a retired SSG) and said "Happy Memorial Day". I instantly thought of your message. Hope all went well for you today and didn't let that bother you too much. You and your husband serving are in my mind often and I wish you all well and your fellow service members and their family. I want to thank your husband for doing such a noble deed as to protect citizens like myself.
P.S. - Please don't stop posting. I have always enjoyed your posts.
Take care. I am a former Sergeant that served in the US Army. I understand your feelings very well.
Thank you to you and Rainy above. I think that - Kendra

maybe I was wearing my heart on my sleeve a little. I am not sure why I let some random stranger hurt my feelings. I don't really know why I care what this person, whoever she is, thinks of me or my opinions.
And thank you for your service :D - Kendra

and for some reason all the schools don't even recognize it as a holiday! sm - RoadRunnerMT

That just urks me so bad. All the schools in our area had school. No it wasn't make up days, it was originally planned day of school. We let our kids go until counted there for the day and then I checked them out personal reasons. Sad when they get out for other holidays such as MLK day but not Memorial Day.
re: Days off - momma

It doesn't irk me much, our district gets to decide the year before what days they are going to select to be off, and if the weather required that any days were missed during the winter, they go to class on Memorial Day or Martin Luther King day or Cesar Chavez day. It's not very fair, but I guess they have to watch out to get all the school days accounted for. Lol!
My kids did make memorial banners and flags and sent them to the veterans and to our local military cemetary for their ceremony. I thought it was really awesome that the 5th and 6th grade teachers did this for our servicemen.
How can a school not recognize a federal holiday? - it is not a choice

What is their excuse or reasoning? How do they get away with that?
Kendra! I don't think one person means it as disrespect. (sm) - Debbie

And I do think most people know what the day is about. My dad was a Vietnam Vet, 2 tours, and though he didn't fall in service, he is gone now, and I love this day or any to honor him. Anybody that acknowledges my dad to me, whether it was the "happy holiday, daughter", or "thanks for his service" from another vet, wow it made me choke back tears. In a good way. Just to have him acknowledged.
I kind of think the whole BBQ thing, having a day off, celebrating, family, friends, fun stuff... that is honoring our servicemen and women! That is exactly what freedom is. Raise a glass to that!
Oh yeah, I'm Army National Guard, now IRR. Never went overseas, but have been deployed to New Orleans for Katrina and Raleigh NC for Hurricane Earl, and many many wildfires in California, my own state. It was my honor and pleasure.
One more thing...whether you know a vet or active servicman/woman or not...it is a day to remember anyone who you want to remember!
Just voicing my own thoughts, which I always have on these days. I'm a pretty patriotic girl and all. Born on Flag Day!
Thank you to you and your loved one for their sacrifice.
I don't think that anyone means it disrespectfully. - Kendra

As I said, it is just a pet peeve of mine. I certainly don't think anyone says it to be nasty. I am sorry I posted at all. And thank you for not getting all nasty to me. :D
And of course you can remember whomever you want to remember - Kendra

but Memorial Day is a holiday about remembering those who died in service to our nation.
You have done what you wanted, made someone feel badly. - Debbie

Maybe he didn't die in service, but he died because of his service. Absolutely. I'll keep honoring him on this day, whatever it stands for, hope that's okay by you. I wish I hadn't bothered checking back on the thread, your little contrary reply really got to me. I hope that wasn't your intent, but it appears it was. I tried to converse respectfully with you but I won't post a comment on your thread again.

I thank your father for his service. The part that I was actually replying to was where you said that it is a day to remember anyone you want to remember and I was only pointing out that it really is a day set aside for service members. I am sorry that I made you feel badly. I really did not mean to.

Memorial Day means different things to different people. Some people are happy because they get a long weekend. For some, it means summer is approaching and that makes them happy. A lot of people go camping. Many cities and towns have Memorial Day parades to honor veterans. My dad was a veteran and I honor his memory. People can be aware of the meaning of a holiday without wearing black or going around feeling sad all day. Perhaps they've prayed in private or visited a cemetery before going off to enjoy family time, the here and now are important too. I personally choose happiness over sadness but that does not mean I am not grateful for those who have served our country. If you want to be sad and solemn, that is your choice too. I've never heard anyone say "Happy Memorial Day." I hear "have a good holiday" a lot. If this bothers you, Christmas must really be difficult as many people don't honor Jesus' birthday.
Yes, do get off your soapbox. Is there anything - that is NOT your pet peeve?

In Honor Of My Son-in-law This Memorial DayMay 30, 2011We ride with an American flag on our bike
It waves on our Gold Wing behind us
Knowing our soldiers are fighting a war
In lands full of desert and dust
Our hearts are heavy losing a loved one so dear
Leaving behind two children and a wife
He gave his country the ultimate gift
For our freedom he gave up his life
I look at the flag now and know what it means
To have this freedom we share
No longer taking it for granted
And knowing that war isn't fair

Memorial Day And PeopleMay 30, 2012With Memorial Day having just passed it brought to mind why our service men and women are fighting. To preserve our freedoms and that includes freedom of speech and the freedoms to believe what we want. Sometimes I am gone for days, sometimes work and family keeps gives me little time to come. These past few days or a week or so of posts here on the boar ...

I Was So Happy To See This!Apr 21, 2011This story is one illustrates why government-controlled health care can be a dangerous thing. The doctors and the government took choice away from these parents and basically said "sorry, your child is just going to die, no tracheotomy for him."
