Memorial Day

Posted: May 29, 2010

President Herbert Hoover conducted the first national Memorial Day ceremony in Arlington National Cemetery, on May 30, 1929.  Every since our presidents have gone to Arlington National Cemetery in remembrance of those who gave all for our freedom.  However, our current president is not going to Arlington.  Instead the vice president will be going to Arlington while Obama goes home to Chicago.  Our president gives a speech telling us that Memorial Day is more than BBQs and spending time with family.  Just once....I'd love for this president to practice what he preaches.  I'm sorry but I find it offensive that Obama is going to take this holiday weekend to go home to Chicago instead of doing what every president since Hoover has done.

Please spare me the comments about how I will go after Obama for any little thing.  To me..this isn't a little thing.  Also, if Bush had done this, you guys would have been all over him...as would I.  I just think it is disrespectful for ANY president to blow off the tradition of going to Arlington for Memorial Day.  Just another example of the lack of respect our president has for our country and the brave men and women who have fought and continue to fight for us.

I think you should do some research on the subject. - Trigger Happy

There have been other presidents who sent someone else to Arlington instead of going. President Reagan missed four of eight ceremonies. President George H.W. Bush did not attend a single one. President Clinton had perfect attendance. President George W. Bush was there seven out of eight years.

So President Obama is NOT the first president to not go to Arlington for Memorial Day since President Hoover started the tradition in 1929.

I also understand that our president will be involved in a remembrance ceremony in Illinois.

With that being said, I do believe that any person holding the office of president should go to Arlington for Memorial Day. However, I'm not going to ridicule Obama for something previous presidents have done.

The important thing is the remembrance, NOT where that takes place. - NM

If I were the president, I would consider it my duty to go to Arlington on Memorial Day.
I hear what you're saying, but have you ever thought that those families-- - SM

national cemetery for vets in this country. Yes, we have other cemeteries with those who gave all for our country....not to mention those Americans laid to rest in other countries as well. I just think that since Arlington is the largest and it is so close to our capital....it just makes sense to have it there. BTW, I do have loved ones who served this country and aren't at Arlington.
Well, hopefully Obama will run everything by you for your approval from now on. - nm

Did I bash Obama for not going? No, I did not. I simply stated that I believe anyone holding that position should go and that goes for any pubs or crats that may hold the position of president during Memorial Day. Get a grip!

I give Bush 1 a pass. I think the problem is Obama's attitude towards the military in general, and golfing more than Bush did in his entire 8 years. He needs to quit vacationing so much and get on the problems in this country.

God Bless our Heroes (including my SIL and nephew, my two older brothers and my FIL, along with our deceased heroes).
Why would you give Bush 1 a pass for not attending even one at ARlington? - lala

With Memorial Day having just passed it brought to mind why our service men and women are fighting.  To preserve our freedoms and that includes freedom of speech and the freedoms to believe what we want.  Nobody should be cutting down anyone else because they don't believe a certain way (that is the way they believe).  Sometimes I am gone for days, sometimes work and family keeps gives me little time to come.  These past few days or a week or so of posts here on the boar ...
