Math problem - calculating cost of apples

Posted: Mar 20, 2016

Trying to figure out how much this will cost me for my budget.

A couple weeks ago I bought 5 applies - they were 3.99/lb and came to $12. (eeks! - they were very good applies - Honeycrisp)

I am near broke (no rather I AM broke with a very limited amount of money), but I need to buy another 5 applies.  This time I see a sale for Pink Lady apples (another very good apple).  These applies are on sale for 1.29 a pound.  If I buy 5 of them can someone tell me how much 5 will cost.  Is that even possible to know?

Told DH (who did the shopping the last time) - No more 5 applies for $12!!!

I am so broke, but have to buy food.  Been scouring the sales ads.  So tired of living this way.  Lots of stuff on sale I can't eat cos I'm diabetic.  Cannot afford much meat either.  My job has really taken a downturn for the worse.  Wish things would get better.

Just thought I'd ask on the applies if anyone knows how much 5 applies at 1.29 a pound would cost.

Depends entirely on...SM - Old Anon

how much those 5 applies weigh. No way to tell ahead of time. It sounds like your original example of 5 applies costing $12 at $3.99 a pound that those 5 applies weighed 3 lbs. (3 x 3.99 = $11.97. Doesn't your grocery store have scales in the produce department? You must bag the applies and weigh them to get the total weight times the cost per pound.

Do you get out to shop much? - Depends on size/weight

You did not know this?????

Apply for foodstamps and educate yourself on how to calculate costs of food, particularly produce and meat.

Just want to say Pink Lady apples are my FAVE. So very - crisp and juicy. Yum. nm

If they weighed the same per apple as your expensive ones, sm - Budgeter

then your 5 apples would cost $3.90 or so.

If they are smaller than your extravagant ones, and they probably are, 5 would cost less. Small apples are about 4 to a pound, medium-sized apples are about 3, and large apples about 2 per pound. If your 5 apples at 3.99 a pound cost $12, then they were very large apples at only 1-2/3 apples per pound, and you should have been eating only half a one as a serving, especially if you are diabetic.

If your $1.29/pound apples are medium-sized, then 5 would cost you about $2.15.

But if you're really broke, what you need to do is learn to buy 5- or 10-pound bags of cheap apples and store them properly to last you several weeks--and make applesauce out of any that start to go bad. Even better, buy a bushel from a farm when they're in season and put those up for yourself. Or you could buy a case of the cored, peeled, and sliced dried apples that the LDS sells for food storage. A third cup of those equals a large apple, would cost you about $1.60 for the equivalent of 5 large apples, and a case of 6 cans would last you about 9 months at 5 large apples per week. At a more normal 1/4 cup dried apple slices per serving of apple, it would last you a whole year at 5 apples per week, and they would cost you just $5 a month.

FWIW, apples here in 3 to 5 lb bags run between sm - Budgeter

40 cents a pound for Delicious to $1 a pound for Gala, with Rome, Empire, McIntosh, and Granny Smith varieties at around 60 to 85 cents a pound. They're generally medium-sized apples in the bags, so 5 apples would cost from 65 cents to $1.66, with the intermediate-priced varieties at around $1.20 for 5, a tenth of what you paid for your 5 apples last week. If you like Delicious (I really don't), you could get it down to 1/20th of what you spent.

I Think The Cost Of Birth Control Is A Problem For Jul 01, 2014
I know when I was young and needed it most people actually had some money left over to pay for stuff like that after your essentials came out - can any of us MTs honestly say we could afford birth control today if we had to use it? And we are not the only ones who have been victims of corporations lowering and lowering your pay while prices in the real world went up and up. I do think free contraception is a good thing. Contraception stops unwanted pregnancy = prevents abortion. I think this ...

Good Old MathOct 16, 2013
Hey guys and gals.  I hate to over-simplify something so complicated but I am sure we have all learned, you have to have more coming in than going out.  If you borrow, you have more to pay, but you still have to have more coming in to cover that.  You have to reserve some in case of an emergency.  I think it is a matter of losing touch with reality and the basics that has landed us in hot water. ...

On Friday’s Morning Joe, MSNBC panelist Donny Deutsch pushed the typical liberal “tax cuts for the rich” narrative as he slammed the Republican health care reform bill: "The other side of the aisle will call this as a redistribution of wealth. Obviously, parties are given to hyperbole, but the reality according to the Center [for] Tax Policy is that 90 percent of the benefits in this plan go to families making $700,000 a year or more, the one percent. Cost Of Getting Braces Going UpJan 11, 2013
Obamacare Medical Device Tax: As of Jan.1, Obamacare imposes a new tax of 2.3 percent on medical device manufacturers, including those who make dental braces. The tax is imposed on gross sales -- even if the company does not earn a profit in a given year. While the tax will be paid to the IRS by the manufacturer, the tax will be passed along as a higher cost of the product, ultimately to be borne by the parent buying the braces for their child. With the cost of braces being as high as $7,625 ...

Tea Party Could Cost Republicans In CensusApr 06, 2010
By John ByrneMonday, April 5th, 2010 -- 9:00 am Republicans were thrilled when Tea Party-backed Scott Brown won a special election to capture Ted Kennedy's Senate seat in Massachusetts. But they're not quite as thrilled with the Tea Party now. Angst at the government in power may fuel some conservatives to boycott the US census, costing their party coveted seats in Congress for years to come. Republicans could also lose seats in state legislatures if districts are redrawn. The US po ...
