I'm writing a novel - need suggestions

Posted: Nov 24, 2012

I'm participating in NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month).  The idea is you write a 50,000 word novel in the month of November, good, bad, or ugly, just get the words down.  My main character is an MT and she and her co-worker are talking about bad dictators.  I could use more ideas.  What is the funniest/strangest thing you have ever heard a doctor say while transcribing?

;

Are you looking for what they should be including - IAMT

[ In Reply To ..]
in the actual medical report or perhaps what they say that is not to be included in the medical record? Got some real dandies from the side bar comments if ya want them;-)

I have a couple, as well. feel free to email me. - anon

sounds interesting and fun. Is there a prize for this "novel?" just curious.

Here are plots I thought would - be interesting...

MT overhears doctor murdering patients, spouse, business partners, or whatever and lives in fear of being discovered. Kind of like "Rear Window."

MT steals identities from patients and eventually has to track them down and murder them.

MT gets fed up, flips out and starts tracking down rude, nasty dictators and ensures they meet grisly, horrifying deaths. (I'm thinking a la "Saw" series.)

The last one is actually my favorite. LOL!
Heres the most interesting story line ever - see message

A girl puts out thousands for an education, works 17 years in the business, has a decent income, supports her 2 kids alone, pays her taxes, and along comes a wicked squid (MModal) and drops pay, ships work to India, thousands of employees are unemployed, all of those thousands are now not paying taxes in the US, the MT loses her home, now lives in a shelter, getting food and medical care through the county, cant afford anything. The whole country stands by and sees this happening everywhere, in lots of other jobs and no one does anything about it. The government has a huge deficit, people have no jobs, living off the counties they live in, no one pays taxes to help pay down the deficit, and the government keeps borrowing money from China, and suddenly, the US as we know it is GONE.. SOLD TO CHINA.

The End
Sounds amazingly like "reality." - anon

Really... This one sounds more - like a

documentary than fiction!
an awful lot of "death" involved in all of these suggestions - anon

make me wonder and a little bit frightened....of you.
I love murder mysteries and - unfortunately...

cannot think of any way to inject *sex* or even glamour into this occupation. LOL
Sex is easy to incorporate - Nancy
[ In Reply To ..]
Just have someone under the MT's table performing various acts while she tries to keep up her line count.
ewww....yuk! - ann
[ In Reply To ..]
just the thought gives me the creeps! couldn't you have kept this one to yourself?
Your imagination did you in... - Nancy
[ In Reply To ..]
...because I did not specify what acts. Your thoughts betray you. It could be as simple as kissing her toes.
I love a good bodice-ripper, but... - RC

Combining sex and MT is enough to make me frigid for the rest of my life.
for once, RC, you and I agree on one thing at least. - anon

just trying to stay off the politics board. It really Ps me off, most days. Otherwise, you are okay, I guess.
You are okay too - RC
[ In Reply To ..]
It really IS safer on this board. Is it just me, or do you get a physical reaction on the political board? Sometimes I swear I can feel my blood pressure soar. Then I'm grumpy for a few hours. My poor husband. :(
very much so.... - anon
[ In Reply To ..]
I get very angry on that board and it carries through to everything I do and say to anyone over the rest of the day, and maybe for several days. I don't have a husband, but I would feel quite badly for him if I did. My children are all grown and do not live with me, but they mostly get the brunt of my anger through emails and such. I am trying very hard to stay off that board. Most of the discussions, although informative, have no pertanance to life or reality, anyway. Things will be the way they are going to be, and nothing one can say or do, unless you are a member of a political team, is going to change that at all. For me, it is best just to not "get involved" in any of the conversations on there. :-)
I'm sorry if I contributed to your misery - RC
[ In Reply To ..]
I truly don't want to upset anyone, and I think half the time my own distress comes from the fact that I think I've upset other people, and the other half of the time, it's from the fact that other people have upset me!

I think it is healthy to stay away. It helps that the board is slower these days. I still stop by, but I'm trying not to get caught up in anything.
I will admit - anon
[ In Reply To ..]
that you did get under my skin a few times, but so did many of the other "regulars" on there. It was not just you, by any means! I need to learn to not get involved in any conversations, even if I feel someone else is being "ganged up on," or if I feel that someone is just plain wrong in what they are posting. I am just plain happier if I do not even go on the board and read anything...I guess I get "sucked in" way too easily. But that is my problem. There are times when even the other boards have posters that can irritate me too. Guess one of my lessons in life is to gain some self-control and stay out of it. :-)
I feel the same as you. - RC
[ In Reply To ..]
I get sucked in way too easily and it only makes me miserable. And again, I'm sorry to have bugged you like that.
That's okay....my fault too... - anon
[ In Reply To ..]
If I LET it bother me, then the other poster (not just you) controls me. I really do not like being angry all the time, even though there are parts of my life that would justify me being that way, but as you said, I am the one who is miserable because of it and only I can change that. so, I am working on it. :-)
I'd like that - teehee

I'd love for someone to come clean out the dust bunnies under my desk.. that would be sexy.
Sexiest thing a man can do for a woman... - Nancy
[ In Reply To ..]
Exactly. I once read the results of a survey where women were asked what would get them "in the mood." The overwhelming response was their partner having cleaned the house. I have a hubby who cooks, and does the dishes and the laundry while I do MT. I make sure he is aware how much I appreciate him.

can't decide if this was funny or ghastly - x-ray MT

NaNoWriMo - Nancy

[ In Reply To ..]
You go girl. NaNo is great fun. I have done it and won it 6/7 times. You are getting down near the end. Keep going and pass that finish line.

I'm not taking part this year because I have 2 full-time jobs and do need to sleep once in a while.

Nancy, It seems like - Cooper

[ In Reply To ..]
If you have won so many times, shouldn't you be a published author instead of an MT? You must be a darned good writer.

Good?!? Writer - Nancy

[ In Reply To ..]
Thank you for the compliment.

"Winning" NaNoWriMo requires writing 50,000 words in 30 days. The quality usually sucks and nobody reads what we have written.

I am a mediocre writer at best. I just had a lot of stories to tell. The scary thing is that being an MT pays better than being a writer unless you are someone like Stephen King or JK Rowling. That's pretty disheartening for budding writers.

I Can Not Take Credit For Writing This But I AmJul 23, 2010
I know that it will be followed by another silly tit-for-tat argument instead of some real, honest, self reflection, I am sorry to say.    I find it sadly humorous that a certain official increased the national debt from 5 Trillion to 11 Trillion dollars in 8 years, more than any administration, basically bankrupting the Treasury and adding a tax burden of gigantic proportions to future American citizens. I find it sadly humorous that during the grounding of all aircraft just after S ...

Does Stupidity Run Among Nonthinkers? Writing Someone Else's VerbiageJul 01, 2014
as their own is not exactly thinking for themselves. After reading the same talking points from people on different sites, I saw that they aren't original thoughts...at least those against the Hobby Lobby decision...IOW, can't think for themselves?  Why do I say that? Suggestions WelcomeApr 11, 2011
There's a guy who I am just friends with (we all kind of hang out together at a local track).  We all walk together at various times sometimes in a group, sometimes 2 at a time or 1 at a time.  This guy and I usually have quite enough to talk about, but occasionally this guy will lapse into total silence.  I have seen him do this with just me, or with me and another person, or a group so it is not personal.  The trouble is, if it's just me and him, that I start feel ...

Need SuggestionsDec 07, 2011
Hi all- I am in serious need of Christmas gift suggestions, but not just your ordinary giving a gift.  We have some friends who are traveling to Ecuador for 3 months, starting in January. I am wanting to get them an International gift credit card, but I have heard that even using a credit card is a big rigamarole in that country, advance notice, etc. Does anyone know if getting an International calling card (when I'm not the one traveling) is a problem? I can't buy them somethin ...

Suggestions...PLEASE!!!Dec 20, 2009
Okay, so our new neighbors upstairs apparently brought a "gift" with them to share with all of the tenants... COCKROACHES. We've found two so far today, and have lived here for well over a year without ever having them before, so my assumption is the new tenants upstairs brought them with them when they moved in.  Now that I'm done panicking and gagging, I'm still mortified that I have these eight-legged filthy bandits anywhere near me, I thought I would ask on this board ...

Need SuggestionsDec 19, 2013
Okay, so this isn't earth-shattering, but I'm looking for a solution. My husband is in the retail business and he's always got a wad of keys in his shorts pocket (FL, hence the shorts as opposed to pants!). Anyway, the metal color or whatever it is from the keys leaves stains around the outside of the pocket area that I cannot seem to remove--the metal color like seeps through to the outside. I've tried all sorts of spot removers, leaving detergent to soak on the spot, etc ...

I really hate writing this, but I have nowhere to turn and thought maybe I'd get some suggestions of things I can do. Things are bad for us financially.  My husband was laid off from his job a couple months ago.  Within 2 weeks I got a layoff notice.  We were finally getting back on our feet after another financial crisis and then this happened.  He has not been able to find work (older worker) and I found a job, but it is PT and is making less than what I used to make. ...
