There's a guy who I am just friends with (we all kind of hang out together at a local track).  We all walk together at various times sometimes in a group, sometimes 2 at a time or 1 at a time.  This guy and I usually have quite enough to talk about, but occasionally this guy will lapse into total silence.  I have seen him do this with just me, or with me and another person, or a group so it is not personal.  The trouble is, if it's just me and him, that I start feeling ill at ease and am more likely to just babble something silly, then feel like a big goofball.  Have thought I could either ask him something about himself, his family or whatever, or perhaps just move on and leave him alone if that is what he wants.  Don't know what the etiquette is on this - tired of feeling like a big doofus.  Thanks in advance for any opinions.

Just enjoy the silence. Some people are just quiet. - Silence is good

I'm like you. I can always find something to say, but there is nothing wrong with a little bit of quiet. See if you can get comfortable with it. It takes practice.

Sometimes people don't need to be talking all the time and its just nice sharing quite moments together where neither of us feels the need to talk.

Strangest thing. My boy is the quietest kid you would ever meet. Just like my father and my brother. Still waters run deep, I guess. I am a huge extrovert, great big personality, and I thought I wrecked him by being overbearing, but it's really just who he is. At baseball, after 2 years of being on the same team, one of his teammates came running up to me stating, "Eddie just talked, I didn't know he could!" Absolutely amazing. Teachers just love him. Makes my friends and family nuts, but he is very thoughtful, extremely intelligent and has many friends. Girls are really drawn to his sincere, kind, quiet nature. All you can do is wait for them to speak their usually profound, well-thought-out statements.

thanks - and further thought - Ang

I appreciate the thoughts. I think this guy (he has mentioned this) kind of goes out there to de-stress from his job and probably needs the silence, although that is not exactly the place to find it . I don't feel I know him well enough to talk about things that are necessarily all that important to me, although we have occasionally. What bothered me was my nervousness and tendency to rattle when he shuts down. I agree, practicing silence is a good skill - or I could walk alone or join some of the other more consistent people out there. I was being really hard on myself - I think we all come from the point of anxiety once in a while and say something silly.
Thanks for the thoughts.

His and Her Diaries!

Her Diary :

Tonight, I thought my
husband was acting weird. We had made plans to meet at a
restaurant for dinner. I was shopping with my friends all day
long, so I thought he was upset at the fact that I was a bit late, but
he made no comment on it. Conversation wasn't flowing, so I
suggested that we go somewhere quiet so we could talk. He agreed, but he
didn't say much. I asked him what was wrong; He said, 'Nothing.'
I asked him if it was my fault that he was upset. He said he
wasn't upset, that it had nothing to do with me, and not to worry about
it. On the way home, I told him that I loved him. He smiled
slightly, and kept driving. I can't explain his behavior I don't
know why he didn't say, 'I love you, too.' When we got home, I
felt as if I had lost him completely, as if he wanted nothing to do with
me anymore. He just sat there quietly, and watched TV. He
continued to seem distant and absent. Finally, with silence all
around us, I decided to go to bed. About 15 minutes later, he came
to bed. To my surprise, he responded to my caress, and we made
love. But I still felt that he was distracted, and his thoughts
were somewhere else. He fell asleep - I cried. I don't know what
to do. I'm almost sure that his thoughts are with someone else.

My life is a disaster!

Boat wouldn't start,
can't figure it out, at least I got laid.

Hi all- I am in serious need of Christmas gift suggestions, but not just your ordinary giving a gift.  We have some friends who are traveling to Ecuador for 3 months, starting in January. I am wanting to get them an International gift credit card, but I have heard that even using a credit card is a big rigamarole in that country, advance notice, etc. Does anyone know if getting an International calling card (when I'm not the one traveling) is a problem? I can't buy them somethin ...

Suggestions...PLEASE!!!Dec 20, 2009
Okay, so our new neighbors upstairs apparently brought a "gift" with them to share with all of the tenants... COCKROACHES. We've found two so far today, and have lived here for well over a year without ever having them before, so my assumption is the new tenants upstairs brought them with them when they moved in.  Now that I'm done panicking and gagging, I'm still mortified that I have these eight-legged filthy bandits anywhere near me, I thought I would ask on this board ...

Okay, so this isn't earth-shattering, but I'm looking for a solution. My husband is in the retail business and he's always got a wad of keys in his shorts pocket (FL, hence the shorts as opposed to pants!). Anyway, the metal color or whatever it is from the keys leaves stains around the outside of the pocket area that I cannot seem to remove--the metal color like seeps through to the outside. I've tried all sorts of spot removers, leaving detergent to soak on the spot, etc ...

Help, Please. Need Suggestions.Dec 12, 2016
I really hate writing this, but I have nowhere to turn and thought maybe I'd get some suggestions of things I can do. Things are bad for us financially.  My husband was laid off from his job a couple months ago.  Within 2 weeks I got a layoff notice.  We were finally getting back on our feet after another financial crisis and then this happened.  He has not been able to find work (older worker) and I found a job, but it is PT and is making less than what I used to make. ...

My father-in-law is coming over this month with his family, and then next month my mother-in-law is coming over with her family. They don't come over to our house much, and I wanted to cook for them. I was wondering if anyone had any good ideas for company dinners that is kid-friendly. I'm not afraid of cooking, I enjoy it, but usually it is only for my husband and daughter and me. I don't cook for large groups very often. There will probably be about 6-10 people each group.  ...

No Judgments, Please, Just Suggestions Or AdviceDec 29, 2009
Without going into any details, I've been having to take an enormous amount of pain medications for the past couple of years just to be able to function in my daily activities. Halloween Is Coming! Any Suggestions For Sep 27, 2014
stays on and doesn't sweat off after a night of dancing and partying?  (My face will be painted like a skull).  The costume store paint is greasy and smears off easily.   Right now I'm experimenting with white eyeliner (the stick kind you use on the lower lid water line) and so far, it stays on, but isn't as opaque as I'd like.  Have any of you done a successful skull-face makeup job that stayed on and didn't smear?   ...

I Am So Frustrated With My Neck Pain! Any Suggestions?Oct 30, 2010
I have been dealing with my neck issues for 20 years.  I've been in to MVAs where I was rear-ended by someone traveling pretty fast and I had whiplash injuries both time.  Add the whiplash to what I do for a living and you have a recipe for a chronically painful, stiff neck.  I've now graduated into shooting pains up my neck to behind my left ear and of course those fun tension headaches from the back of my head up to the crown. I went to my doctor last week and got the ...

"How To Read In 2013." Some Specific SuggestionsDec 30, 2012
"COME what may in the next 12 months, 2013 has this much going for it: It’s a year without a midterm election, and a year that’s as far removed as possible from the next presidential race.
