Need some book suggestions! Whatcha reading?

Posted: Mar 15, 2012

I need some reading suggestions.  I have been stuck reading the same author because I love her writing style and her stories, but she doesn't have anything new out right now and I am dying for a good read.

I love mystery novels with some romance mixed in.  Tami Hoag is my fave and is the one that doesn't have anything new out.  So any suggestions?

Have you read Steig Larsson's The Girl with the - sm

Dragon Tattoo trilogy? If not, they are better than the movies (Swedish version anyway) and they are absolutely compelling .

I was considering The Girl with Dragon Tattoo. I haven't seen the movie - Stuck in a Rut!

yet, and always like to read the book before seeing the movie so I can pick apart the movie :)

You've talked me into it!

Great book and movie! - jojobell

This is a very good book, but the crimes in it a pretty horrific so just be prepared. I thought the movie definitely did the book justice which I don't think usually happens when they turn good books into movies. If someone didn't read the book first and saw the movie I don't know how they would know what was going on.

You will be hooked and unable to put it down. - sm

Also the other 2, The Girl Who Played wtih Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets Nest. They were actualy written (the 3 of them) as one book but it would have made it waay to long so it was broken down into 3 books. One picks up where the other one left off. I did the same thing...read them before seeing the movie. Netflix has the trilogy and they now have an expanded version..and it is broken down into 2 parts for each book. I would read the book, then see the move, then read the other one and so on. Of course, these are the original Swedish moves so they are subtitled.
Agree...I'd def read these in order - Loved them, too.

Haven't seen the movie, yet, and I posted to OP below about Repairman Jack and Jack Reacher series. Repairman, I'd try to read in order, but Reacher has a little more laxity.

The Gulag Archipelago by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn - PassingThru

[ In Reply To ..]
This is REALISM and REAL HISTORY, not escapist fantasy. It is a glimpse into how we serfs will be treated once the roundups begin and we find ourselves in FEMA camps. History DOES repeat itself.

I may check this out too, although may be a bit heavy - Stuck in a Rut!

for vacation reading. But I do like to throw in some books with substance every now and then.

Janet Evanovich Stephanie Plum Series - super good

[ In Reply To ..]
And theres 18 of them, so you wont get bored fast.

Going downhill - anon

[ In Reply To ..]
The first 12 were hilarious, the last few were as if they were written by someone else and the last one where Ranger hires Stephanie to find out who is hacking into his computer - really?? Does JE have amnesia about who Ranger is and what he is capable of? We sure don't. It was so totally implausible as to be laughable. I swear someone else wrote it - which is the general concensus of most everyone who reviewed the book on Amazon.com. Stick to the early numbers and you won't be disappointed.

Another possibility - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
JE's early books, from before Plum, were so different from Plum that I often wondered if JE wrote the early ones and had help writing the Plums. The writing is completely different. Perhaps the ghost author quit and JE wrote the last one herself.

I love this series, too :) - nm

Try some of these for a mix of mystery and a little romance.

Margery Allingham
Lisa Gardner
Lisa Unger
M.M. Kaye
Deanna Raybourn

I also love all the Vince Flynn political thrillers.

I haven't read any Tami Hoag (I don't know why), but I'll definately check some out at my next trip to the library.

Greg Isles (Could be Ilses -not sure of spelling) Great great books with "heft." Get started and don't want to put them down. By heft I mean not a light read. Good luck to you on this. I love books and reading.

No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency series by Alexander McCall Smith - Delightful

[ In Reply To ..]
Really excellent . . . read slowly and savor. Full of insight about people and quietly funny. Wonderful characters.

Hunger Games - Angie

[ In Reply To ..]
My daughter read it and I didn't think I would like it, read it, loved it. The 1st and 2nd, couldn't put down, the 3rd kinda dragged. I read same authors over and over too. I rcently read TR Ragan Lizzy Garder Series. Now reading Barbara Freethy a brother series...jake and dylan and Mr. and Miss Anonymous by Fern Michaels, yes, these are older ones, but I've read all the new releases. LOL. Hope this helps! (BTW I have a kindle, thats how i know they are old).

Love Ann Patchett - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
My favorites include Bel Canto, as well as her most recent, State of Wonder.

what I'm reading - Ayn

[ In Reply To ..]
Not sure any of these fit your mystery/romance genre, but I just finished War & Peace and several other "classics" (because they're free on Kindle).

Have recently discovered Kristin Hannah and LOVE what books of hers I've read so far.

Now getting ready to read from something on this list: Hiding My Candy (autobiography of The Lady Chablis from Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil), The Maeve Chronicles (series of 4), The Wolf Gift (new Anne Rice), Atlas Shrugged (for about the 7th time), and eagerly awaiting June release of next Laurell K. Hamilton Anita Blake book.

Also just hit the HalfPrice Bookstore last week and picked up books by: Dan Brown, Kay Hooper, Clive Barker, and Greg Iles.

All these books -- I can't decide which to read first!!

had to check your list - ...

[ In Reply To ..]
because of your moniker! It's about time I re-read Atlas Shrugged - such a gorgeous book!

I'm definitely picking up the Lady Chablis book. Loved that character! - Stuck in a Rut!

[ In Reply To ..]
I haven't seen that book before. Loved Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.

Love Hoag, too... - my suggestions

[ In Reply To ..]
F. Paul Wilson writes the Repairman Jack series. I was hooked on them, but you have to be open-mined enough to enjoy a bit of sci-fy (I don't do the heavily SF stuff).

Lee Child's Jack Reacher series. No sci-fy but a bit of romance.

Anything by Tess Gerritsen (sp?, think it's correct). Not a bunch of romance but keeps the pages turning.

If you find anything else good, let us know, please.

I read the Gulag Archipelago years ago. Currently I am reading "My Antonia" by Willa Cather and love it. I'm actually revisiting books that I never read in high school, too young to appreciate them then, I guess. I also like Edith Wharton ("The House of Mirth," "The Age of Innocence.") I also recently read "Out of Africa," Izak Dinezen's (sp?) memoir of her years running a coffee plantation, I'm sure many of you saw the movie. None of these are mysteries of Sci-Fi, I know, but good books all the same.

Three of my Faves - PI addict

[ In Reply To ..]
Don't know if you consider private detective novels "mystery novels", but three of my all time favorites are

1. The Sharon McCone novels by Marcia Muller and there are a ton of them - 20+ or so but you need to start at the beginning with Edwin of the Iron Shoes. What I like about these is that they are set in San Francisco, so she's always mentioning places you know about.

2. Jane Whitefield novels by Thomas Perry. The character of Jane is VERY interesting, she's Native American and she's a one woman "witness protection program" - very skilled, very lethal to anyone who goes after someone she's protecting - fabulous novels. Not like anything you've probably read.

3. John Marshall Tanner novels by Stephen Greenleaf. Also a San Francisco PI. A real Dashiell Hammett kind of PI. You also need to start them in order.

And I can't pass up this opportunity to tell you about my all time favorite group of books - the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon. There are seven books so far and I've read them all multiple times. They are not in the mystery category - truth about it is that they would fall into the - God do I dare say it - "romance" - category. Now don't be turned off, there is a very interesting "twist" to this series. I can honestly say I have suggested these books to at least 10-12 other women, and after they have read the first book "Outlander", they have come to me and profusely thanked me for the most thoroughly satisfying book they have ever read. This is the honest truth. I myself had read the first book six times. If you have already read these books, then you know of what I speak. If not, you will want to tell every woman you know about them. TRUST ME!!

Hope you like my selections.

Huge fan of Gabaldon too, but... - sigher

I just remembered these since it is St. Patrick's Day and I'm Irish..."Angela's Ashes" by Frank McCourt (don't waste your time on the movie, IMO) and "Trinity" by Leon Uris. Have a good day!

There's a guy who I am just friends with (we all kind of hang out together at a local track).  We all walk together at various times sometimes in a group, sometimes 2 at a time or 1 at a time.  This guy and I usually have quite enough to talk about, but occasionally this guy will lapse into total silence.  I have seen him do this with just me, or with me and another person, or a group so it is not personal.  The trouble is, if it's just me and him, that I start feel ...

Hi all- I am in serious need of Christmas gift suggestions, but not just your ordinary giving a gift.  We have some friends who are traveling to Ecuador for 3 months, starting in January. I am wanting to get them an International gift credit card, but I have heard that even using a credit card is a big rigamarole in that country, advance notice, etc. Does anyone know if getting an International calling card (when I'm not the one traveling) is a problem? I can't buy them somethin ...

Okay, so our new neighbors upstairs apparently brought a "gift" with them to share with all of the tenants... COCKROACHES. We've found two so far today, and have lived here for well over a year without ever having them before, so my assumption is the new tenants upstairs brought them with them when they moved in.  Now that I'm done panicking and gagging, I'm still mortified that I have these eight-legged filthy bandits anywhere near me, I thought I would ask on this board ...

Okay, so this isn't earth-shattering, but I'm looking for a solution. My husband is in the retail business and he's always got a wad of keys in his shorts pocket (FL, hence the shorts as opposed to pants!). Anyway, the metal color or whatever it is from the keys leaves stains around the outside of the pocket area that I cannot seem to remove--the metal color like seeps through to the outside. I've tried all sorts of spot removers, leaving detergent to soak on the spot, etc ...

I really hate writing this, but I have nowhere to turn and thought maybe I'd get some suggestions of things I can do. Things are bad for us financially.  My husband was laid off from his job a couple months ago.  Within 2 weeks I got a layoff notice.  We were finally getting back on our feet after another financial crisis and then this happened.  He has not been able to find work (older worker) and I found a job, but it is PT and is making less than what I used to make. ...
