And don't put words in my mouth. Did I say anything about banning all guns or that guns are only a murder weapon? No, I did not. However, universal background checks, licensing for gun owners, and reinstitution of the assault weapons ban would be a start.

In any case, the shooter was apparently someone he counted as a friend, who was perhaps more unstable than he realized. A surprise attack like that, no, you are unlikely to be able to protect yourself, unfortunately.
Somebody breaking into your house, yes. You have time, usually, and having a gun might well save your life in that instance.
But the victim being armed and not having protected themselves certainly doesn't prove that no one should have a gun, or that guns are no use in personal protection. If they aren't any use in personal protection, then we really should disarm the cops, too. They shouldn't need guns, either, I wouldn't think.

Australia and England's murder rates may not have been influenced by their gun restrictions. The article linked below is an opinion piece, but the stats check out.

If someone is looking to kill someone for some perceived offense, then it's between those two people, and the weaker of the 2 will be killed. That's a fact of life with or without guns and we can't do anything about it. But that's no excuse for allowing a maniac to get hold of a military style assault weapon and shoot indiscriminately, killing hordes of innocent people in an instant... that's what I have a problem with. Gun toters or 2nd Amendment rights fanatics can kill each other off one by one for all I care, but leave the rest of us alone... especially the children. They have a right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness too, which by the way is a right that supersedes the 2nd Amendment.
