Does anyone use solar panels or wind turbines?

Posted: Jun 13, 2012

We are planning to build a tiny cabin in the woods and I would like to stay "off grid".  Not to say I do not want some conveniences.  We plan to use propane for cooking and we have a generator.  I am interested in using some solar panels/and or wind for basic lighting, radio, whatever.    Any experience and/or advice?

Congrats to you. I am not "off the grid", but I applaud your efforts and wish you success! There's some cool info on individual wind turbines. Here's a link to get you started:

I can get to be sort of a geek, so I am excited about this. I am reading Solar for Dummies as a staring point. There are many projects in the book that cost perhaps $50 for building a solar preheater for water, a solar oven. My climate does not make a lot of this real practical but it will be fun to experiment.

If you are going to have a cabin off the grid my hat is off to you! I wish I could live that way. Here's a few resources you might be interested in...a magazine called Mother Earth News has lots of articles on building your own solar panels, wind turbines, solar ovens, etc. If you can't subscribe most libraries have issues that you can check out. Also take a look at the catalog at Lehmans.com. They have some really great books about living off the grid, solar power and wind turbines. They also sell propane refrigerators and incinerator toliets and such that you can put into your cabin so you don't have to have a nasty outhouse! HA! They also sell a lot of stuff to the Amish and have been in business for decades, so they know their stuff. Good luck to you!
Thanks, I had forgotten about the Mother - treehugger

I hate to disappoint you, but I will just be roughing it only in the summer and on weekends, but I hope to bring back some of my new "off the grid" knowledge to our city house, too. I will check out Lehmans. Thanks so much for the link and reminder.

Fox News Claims Solar Won't Work In America Feb 09, 2013
"Thanks to Fox News and its expert commentators, millions of Americans now understand the real, hidden reason why Germany's solar-energy industry is so much further along than ours. Turns out it has nothing to do with the fact that Germany's government has long supported the industry far more generously, with policies like feed-in tariffs that stimulate investment in green technologies. No, the real reason is much simpler, explained a trio of journalists on Fox & Friends: It's alw ...

'Death Panels' Debate Returns To Congress: Congressman Building Support For Proposal Apr 29, 2010
The House health care provision that Sarah Palin warned would lead to "death panels" never made it into the final bill, but its backers plan to resuscitate it. Rep. Earl Blumenauer (D-Ore.), who shepherded the amendment through the Ways and Means Committee, is building House support for stand-alone passage of the legislation that would allow Medicare to reimburse health care providers for consulting with patients about end-of-life decisions.
