Do you like where you live?

Posted: Jun 30, 2010

Reading the post below about called Born and Raised got me to thinking of this question....

Do you like where you live?  If you could live anywhere in the world are you where you want to be?

I'm just curious.  If I could live anywhere in the world it would be Switzerland.

;

While I do like where I live (Ga), I don't love it. (sm) - anon

If I could live anywhere in the world it would be England, simply because my heart is there.

I LOVE where I live! (Maine/New England) - Hayseed

It's wicked hard here, mentally and financially, but my husband and I were talking that even if we won the lottery, we'd still be New Englanders. We LOVE the ocean, love the farm land, love the smell of pine trees mixed with ocean smell, and even oddly enjoy the people that may seem cold but once you get to know them, most of them would give you the shirt off their back.

I think though, if we were filthy rich, we'd be dreaded "snow birds" and winter on the southern coast and summer in New England, because that would just be freakin' awesome. :-D

Sounds wonderful! - Christine

I was thinking about a drive to the New England States this fall, and I think you just convinced me. you took me there already with your post! Thanks.
Fall is THE best season of them all! - Hayseed

Absolute best time, bar none. No black flies, no skeeters, pumpkins and apples are ripe, lots of country fairs, and of course the foliage!

We discovered that up to Bar Harbor/Acadia National Park, they have these outdoor fire pits, you know to boil up the lobster and steamers, that are run by wood fire. So, not only do you have the awesome saltwater seafood-ie smell, but you also have the smell of burning wood which is just magical, especially when combined with the crisp ocean air.

You would probably love the Coastal range of Oregon - sm

The scenery seems very similar, but I'm sure the people are different! I've never been to New England, but whenever I see pictures it reminds me of Oregon. Absolutely gorgeous, true seasons, cute little towns (though I would love to come see the old architecture in New England - the closest thing we have is the Wild Western-y towns)
Beautiful! - Christine

Thank you so much for this! Fall has always been my favorite time of year since I was a young child. I must take after my dad. He always loved it so much. Like you, I love the smell of a wood fire, the crisp air, the gorgeous colors of the season, etc. Thanks again! Now you've got me excited. I think the national park you are speaking of was just featured today on the Today Show. It was spectacular!
northeast only place I've never been... - sooo want to go in the Fall!

The foliage you speak of is something that I literally just picture as being gorgeous... I don't know why but that is the one thing I think of when I think of NE, I may be way off but oh well!

I imagine those changing colors!!
So how is the Summer weather there? you mentioned above being snowbirds (I was JUST on the phone with the BF saying the exact same thing about where we live ONLY IF WE COULD RIGHT!! haha).
Summers have been weird lately! ;-) - Hayseed

Right now I have the windows open, it's a cloudless night, and the temp is 58 and dropping and I'm donning sweats and a hoodie! It was about 75 in the sun and dry and breezy today. I could take this year round. BUT the majority of summer is usually muggy.

At least with these cool nights, the mosquitoes and "no see ums" aren't that bad at all, the windows can stay open to cool the house at night in prep for the hotter days when the windows will be shut and shades drawn to keep the cool air in, and I have a luna moth sticking to my screen window for company right now, so that's kinda cool.

So, nope, I can't complain about this summer at all so far. It is New England though, and the weather changes on a dime, but that's half the fun. At least we all have something in common to chat about at the local watering hole. :)

You are living my DREAM, hayseed! - Lucky gal!

[ In Reply To ..]
You just described the dream life of my husband and I. In fact, just the other day we were talking about trying to find a time share in Maine/New England for at least 2-4 weeks out of the year, preferably in fall or spring.

You're a very lucky lady...Enjoy that life, because you have a California girl out here who'd love to trade you spots for a couple of weeks, lol!

I ask myself every day in the winter why I live in Upstate NY! I hate the cold, but stay here because of family, my job and because there are some pros for me. The worst we get is blizzards. I wouldn't want to have to deal with tornados, hurricanes, floods, earthquakes (well, we've actually had some of the above, but nothing like the devestation you see in some states). If I had to pick the perfect place, it would be Hawaii or Australia.

I live in a very different California than most envision. In far northern California, we are surrounded by mountains to the north, east and west, have many lakes and rivers to play in the summer, tons of forest land to hike in, places to play in the snow in the winter, and are a quick drive to the ocean (the place I love the most). We experience 4 distinct seasons and while it may get a little hot here during the summer, I think it is the greatest place to live.

really.. what part of Northern California - are you talking about?

[ In Reply To ..]
What do you think most people invision? LA or SF?
sounds like you are probably in Sonoma or Mendocino counties to me...?

Loving the Philly burbs! - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
I live just outside of Phila, and I love it here. It's so easy to get to all the action on the east coast. A short car or train ride, and I'm in NYC or DC. I can be on a beach in the summer, or the mountains in winter. I also love living in a town. It may be a bit congested at times, but I can walk to everything from the post office to the grocery to the library, even the ER if I had to!

I grew up in a rural community, and I loved that, too. But these days, I prefer the convenience of town living without all the taxes and close quarters of city life. I think I could live happily in other places. I'd love to have a rustic cabin in the woods somewhere or have the canals of Venice at my feet! But, this is where I'm planted, and I'm quite happy.

Upstate New York - I wouldn't live anywhere else! sm - NYMT

First of all, I'll take cold over heat anytime. You can always put on more clothes, but there's a certain point past which you can't get cooler unless you sit in water. I'm proud of our town,Saratoga Springs, its charm, the excitement of tourists coming, the relief of them going, the preponderance of weird intersections. I love how safe I feel from natural disasters - no tornados, hurricanes, earthquakes, forest fires, and, at least in my neighborhood, no floods.

We moved away briefly 17 years ago, came back after 16 months, and to this day I can top a rise coming into town and feel such relief that I'm home! I'm so proud to be a Saratogian!

I absolutely despise being COLD!! - LOL

[ In Reply To ..]
Too funny cause I'd take hot over cold any day! Then again when it was hitting 110 in Vegas I was like UGHHHH. but I feel different than you, you can totally turn on the A/C right! oh yuck I just hate being cold it makes me rigid and actually I think I have seasonal affective disorder! haha.

I do want to go to New York so badly though.... some day I will!

just a side question being that I was in a forum and said Cali and got BLASTED by someone that thought he was "more" California than me...
it was too funny.

The people seem nice and I like the warm climate. It's a little humid, but at least the sun comes out :) I say this now because I have not yet been through a hurricane, so I might have a different answer if you ask me after hurricane season.

I do like where I live...BUT I loved living in the south more... - ahhh miss it!

[ In Reply To ..]
I live in Reno NV and I actually really really like it here. Been here about 5 years (gone last year for a year to the south)... Reno has such an amount of outdoor activities... including the truckee river running down the center of it that in the summer people float in intertubes down (can't wait for my first time to do that this year!)...

I do not like the winters here though... I am not a snowboarder or anything with the snow and I really hate being cold so I'd rather be elsewhere but it's the pay off. Our summers are gorgeous... it cools down just enough in the evening to have an awesome bbq. We don't have fleas, we don't have mosquitos... I love the spring/summer/fall here :)

BUT I lived in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina for a year... the beach is something that I miss DAILY. sounds crazy yea... but it was just so awesome. The problem was the humidity UGH... we have a nice dry heat in Reno. But nothing tops that beach... the town of Myrtle itself leaves much to be desired but it was awesome to live somewhere where thousands of people save all year to vacation you know? And all around the south... the carolinas... Georgia... etc... people are so amazing. I do believe that southern hospitality exists.

I'll never forget reading a postsecret and someone saying "when you call me ma'am, you lose your tip"... and I just thought WOW... in the south that's how people learn to respect one another, and I totally picked up on that while living there and find myself saying ma'am and sir a LOT and just thinking that offends someone is SAD!!

Anyways... I miss it tremendously, but I do feel lucky that I live in a place that I still enjoy!!

Senate Democrats have not figured out a way to get around Republican opposition to reauthorizing extended unemployment insurance for the long-term jobless. The benefits are set to expire at the end of the month, jeopardizing a lifeline for two million people during the holidays. But it's not likely the benefits will be reauthorized before they lapse, since Congress will go home for Thanksgiving next week, meaning this week is the last chance to prevent an interruption in benefits. Live In A Red State And Think You May Not Qualify ForOct 22, 2013
Including those who once applied for Medicaid, did qualify, but were denied. Unfortunately, thanks to the Supreme Court decision, states don't have to extend Medicaid health insurance to fill the gap between those doing okay and the really poor, but the Obamacare does include some important presents for red state residents anyway. It's really bad to just assume, like those people on Hannity -- the free experts Obamacare provides are there to answer questions. This is important stuff. ...
