Anyone watching NFL playoffs?

Posted: Jan 9, 2010

Anyone into the games this weekend?  I am hoping for Dallas and GB to win.  I'd rather face either of them than Arizona or Philly in the divisional round next week.

My Vikings have caused me much Super Bowl and playoff trauma over the years and I'm not expecting much but hoping for the best.  Favre really gives us a good chance.  I'm anxious to see what happens today.  I'll be a wreck by next week (they play on my birthday - the last time that happened, they had gone 15-1 and lost to Atlanta in OT by a field goal.  I was crushed).  If they win, the go to the championship game and I'll be a pure basket case by then.  The rare chance that they do make the Super Bowl?  I may need locked up.  LOL.  I guess you'd have to have lived a life of so many disappointments by your team when it comes to the post season.  The life of a long time Vikings fan.

Though I'd be mad as heck to see New Orleans knock us out of the playoffs, I can't think of a more deserving team in the NFC to go to the Super Bowl.  They've had an awful history.  But they're a lot like the 1998 Vikings, who went 15-1 - flashy offense, porous defense.  We'll see what happens.  Like the Vikings in the last 4 or so games of the season, the Saints' weaknesses have also been exposed.

Anyway, go Vikings!  (And no, I'm not from, nor have I ever even been to MN.  Just grew up loving that purple team with the scrambling QB and awesome defensive line).

Watching, but not that hopeful - Old part-timer

I'm going to watch the Eagles tonight, but I'm not overly optimistic after the butt-kicking they took last week from Dallas. On the other hand, they're at their best when they have their backs to the wall, so hope springs eternal!

Playoffs/Eagles/Vick/Vikes vs. Dallas/Patriots - Vikefan

They didn't do too well. Of course, I haven't been happy with the Eagles (not the players but ownership and mgmt) since they took Vick, that dog murdering felon jerk, poor excuse for a human being who isn't even a very good QB. I mean, I'm glad Tony Dungy is mentoring Vick (I've met and talked with Dungy before - back when he was a coach with the Vikings and he truly is a very very nice man) but I have yet to hear Vick say anything that truly sounds remorseful (and he even stated he didn't feel like he belonged in prison for what he did). It all sounds like a speech written for him.

When I went to get my concealed carry license, I was talking to the cop at the police station about it. He said that almost always, the punishment never seems to fit the crime. I said Vick should have done prison time, then should have been forced to spend a couple of years working with a dog or any animal rescue organization, so he could see some of the things those of us who do work with dog or other animal rescues see - puppy mills, abused, neglected, starved dogs/animals, etc. Personally, I ban Amish products. Amish people are big around Ohio and PA. Not all Amish people run puppy mills but they are pretty famous for it, at least around here. Though their products are top quality, I will not buy anything made by the Amish. I have no way of knowing if that particular Amish person or one of their relatives is running a puppy mill and I'm not taking the chance. If you've ever been to one, trust me - it gives you a shell shock the first time. I cried for days.

Anyway, sorry your team didn't win. McNabb is getting up there in years and poor guy gets hurt a fair amount. You guys should probably look into drafting a QB this April. Vick ain't your future. If the Vikes had taken him, I would have, for the first time since I started rooting for that team around 1974/1975, abandoned them until he was gone. And I love my Vikings a lot. But there's no way in heck I could stomach seeing him every week. I want to claw his eyes out.

We'll do our best to take revenge on the Coke/CrimeBoyz for ya. The Vikings have especially hated Dallas for years - ever since December 28, 1975, during a playoff game when the Vikes were ahead with very little time left, Staubach went back to pass, Pearson blatently pushed our defensive back to the ground, which should have been called as an offensive pass interference but wasn't, and Dallas went on to win the game. One of the refs got hit with a whiskey bottle thrown by one of the fans (I think all football fans have at least imagined doing that, especially with refs like Phil Luckett who can't even get a coin toss correct for OT - I believe it was on Thanksgiving - Detroit vs. Pittsburgh in the 90s - Pittsburgh called whatever, that's what it came up but Luckett insisted they called the other. What an idiot. You could even hear the Steelers guy specifically say head/tails - I don't remember which it was and they still awarded Detroit the ball, who went on to win the game). Anyway, after the whiskey bottle incident, the refs all left the game early, though there were only a few seconds to go. Oooooooh. I want revenge. :-) I hope Tony Romo is wearing our defensive end, Jared Allen, on his back most of the game. :-) I'm worried, though. Dallas is playing good football as a team, not just the offfense or defense. They've really come together. But I hope we dismantle them.

Heck, I still can't figure out why the Patriots' coaching staff was so stupid in that game. With the Ravens, you have a team that throws a grand total of 10 passes (Ravens, the QB completes only 4 (compare to someone like Favre who throws about 40-50 times a game), and the rest of the plays are running plays. You know their QB is no Joe Montanta and he's not going to beat you in the passing game, so their team is one dimensional yet you still can't stop the run? You can't put 8 or even 9 men on the line of scrimmage to stop their one dimensional attack? Good grief. I didn't care who won but I was just baffled by that game.

my favorite time of year!! definitely NOT rooting for the cowgirls though, sorry ! :) as a 49er faithful fan i never could, the only time was on THanksgiving, when they played the absolute most hated team of mine, the raiders. Your vikings barely beat my niners this year... but i always love watching Favre!! good luck. :)

We share a mutual hate for Dallas then. LOL. The Niners former owner, Eddie Debartolo, is from my home town. He was corrupt there, way before he owned the Niners, so I wasn't surprised when things came down with him and the Niners. He's a very wealthy man, though.

The Raiders don't bother me. They suck anyway (and Al Davis - I just don't know about him). What is it with these QBs coming out of college now? First round draft picks sucking - Jamarcus Russell? He's awful. Brady Quinn doesn't look very good. I was mad when we took Daunte Culpepper because we needed defense so bad that year. His first play from scrimmage, he fumbled. For the first 2-3 years, he played with a look on his face like a deer in the headlights and he just was no good at reading defenses. Sure, physically he was a wonderful specimen with a cannon for an arm but what good does that do you when you can't make it past your first read on the field and you're staring that receiving down the entire time? I've watched Favre progress and actually check down his receivers - if his first read is covered, he goes to his second, and so on from there. I've seen him complete passes to his fourth or fifth read. I had to hate the man for years because I hate the Packers and I wasn't happy when we signed him because he left both the Packers and Jets on bad terms and he missed all of our training camp. I didn't know what to expect out of him. By week 3, I finally understood why the man is so well loved and I understand the "Favre magic" but I still hated when Madden would blather on about him, even if he wasn't covering one of Favre's games. Sometimes I wonder if Favre is really human. He's definitely one of the best QBs to ever play the game and when he goes into the HOF in Canton, which is about an hour away from me, I'll be there, wearing a purple #4 jersey, just to really tick off all the Slacker fans that will be there. They're mad enough he went to the Vikes.

As for Culpepper, who the Vikings drafted in the 90s? Any one of us who criticized him was labeled a racist because of his skin color. We were told we didn't like him because he was black and that we didn't think black QBs could make it in the NFL (Doug Williams, anyone?). Didn't matter that we gave very valid reasons, like his constant fumbling, interceptions, miscues, panicking, etc. And we all see how great of a career he's had since leaving the Vikings - On to Miami who dumped him, then Oakland, who dumped him and now he's a backup in Detroit. Yeah. Really good QB.

As for beating the Niners early in the season, that's when I first realized that thing called "Favre magic". I could not believe my eyes. The guy that caught that pass - Greg Lewis? I think maybe he's caught only one more pass the rest of the season. But hey - you guys have a heck of a history, Montana, Young, Rice and co. You guys dominated for so long. You had Bill Walsh, who is a legend. I didn't think Mariucci did a bad job either.

What do my Vikes have to show? First team ever to lose 4 Super Bowls. Only team to have a defensive player pick up a fumble and run it the wrong way to score a safety for the other team. Several early, very embarrassing playoff exits. First team to go 15-1 and not make the Super Bowl (thankfully, now the Steelers have done it too so we're not alone with that anymore). First team to break the scoring record and not go to the Super Bowl. Getting hammered 41-0 in the NFC Championship game in 2001 by the Giants. The Vikes have a major history of choking. But dang it, other than my mom, dad, sister and other blood relatives, they have been my longest relationship - since around 74 or 75 and I will not give up on them. I hope Favre gives us one more year. Of course, we probably won't know until next October. LOL. Funny - no matter how badly they may play or even if they make the playoffs and choke, I'll get mad, threaten to burn my jerseys, etc. but I'm right back there again the next season.

I'm just not real happy they're playing on my birthday again. Last time that happened, Atlanta beat us in OT after we went 15-1 in 1998. So help me, if they ruin another birthday for me........... I'll still be back next year. I must be a glutton for punishment. LOL. If Favre retires, we're in a world of hurt as far as the QB situation. Tavaris Jackson and Sage Rosenfels are hardly inspiring. I think Brett has at least one more year left in him. I hope so, anyway. (Fingers and toes crossed!!!!) Who ever thought I'd end up loving Brett Favre? And to boot, he's dang nice to look at.

I watched Dalls beat the eagles yesterday and am watching GB come back from the Cardinals as I write this... 38 to 31 right now in the 4th quarter.

I know I will be rooting and hollerin' myself here, but hopefully will not be locked up like you, lol. Yes, it would be great wouldn't it? I am a huge fan but am cautiously optimistic. Go Vikes and go Favre!! It's our time.

Gotta have a sense of humor as a Vikings fan (Long) - Vikefantam

[ In Reply To ..]
I couldn't believe how GB lost yesterday. I couldn't believe they came back from such a huge deficit. I thought for sure they were just going to get trounced when AZ was up by something like 24 points.

I begrudgingly must say that I'm pretty impressed by GB's resiliance. I also complimented them 2 years ago on their handling of the Favre situation. I try to give credit where credit is due, even if it is to the hated Packers.

Favre had been putzing around with retirement since 2003 - it was his sixth consecutive year of jerking his team around. Every stinking year - he's going to retire, no he's not, yes he is, no he's not. I'm not even a Packers fan and it was driving ME nuts. Heck, if he had retired a Packer, I was still going to go see his induction into the HOF just to *make sure* he actually HAD retired. LOL.

Anyway, though, I felt that GB's GM, Ted Thompson, handled the situation well. Favre said he was 100% retired, it was for sure, etc. etc. etc. and never shows for camp. They went on with Rodgers. All of the sudden, Favre calls at the end of training camp and expects to be put back on the Packer roster as the starting QB? Wakey wakey! And he was surprised when they didn't welcome him back with open arms? Good grief. IMO, he was acting like a spoiled rotten child. They did a great job by letting him show up and promptly trading him that same day, not only out of the division but out of the conference.

Now GB fans are mad as heck that he's a Viking, which we just found out is what he wanted instead of going to the Jets. They blame the GM. What more could he have done? He doesn't have a crystal ball and could not have possibly predicted Favre's strange season with the Jets (but I'm sure he expected the retirement announcement at the end of the year - LOL). Then Favre retires and is free to go where he wants. I was leary about him, having left his last 2 teams on bad terms but I found out what a jerk former Jets (and for the time being, Cleveland) head coach Eric Mangini is.

Well, Favre finally ended up where he wanted to go first and it came back to haunt Thompson but I think Rodgers is going to be a good QB. That kinda stuff frustrates me - they have Favre for eons (18 years?), then they get *another* good franchise QB. It was kinda like when Joe Montana went to KC and SF comes up with Steve Young, who was also a great QB. And our Vikings cannot seem to find *one* franchise QB to save their lives (and T-Joke ain't it). I know I sound irked, but it's more jealousy than anything. That is - unless Favre gives us another year or two. Heck, I remember in the 70's, Jim Hart played for the St. Louis Cardinals until he was 41.

I've always kind of been an offense fan rather than defense (after the 70's). Regardless of how the 1998 season turned out, it was still a really fun season up until that final FG by Atl. in OT. When Cunningham first came in for an injured Brad Johnson in either game 4 or 5 that year (I think it was game 5 because that's when we went into GB, Randy Moss showed the NFL what he was all about, and we snapped the Packers' home win streak by literally trouncing them in their home. Moss treated defenders like they were a mere inconvenience. At first, watching Cunningham chuck it up in the air, you wondered if Reed, Carter or Moss (or whoever the heck our TE was at the time - it wasn't Crumpler yet, I don't think, maybe Kleinsasser when he played that position) were going to come down with the football. About midway thru the season, I just came to expect it.

I blame Denny Green for that NFCC game loss to Atlanta. We didn't nickname him DeKnee in one of our forums for nothing. They weren't ahead by much, went too conservative way too early when we should have run up the score as much as possible, and we let Atlanta back in the game. They caught up. Then, a tie score, we get the ball back with enough time on the clock to at least get into FG range (Anderson wouldn't miss again), Green takes the most (at the time) prolific offense in NFL history and has them take a knee (hence the name DeKnee Green) to go into overtime. What an idiot.

I'll never ever forget that anguished cry on John Randle's face (that was a confusing year with Randle, Randy Moss, Randall Cunningham and Randall McDaniel - LOL!) for as long as I live. And then Green disappeared. No post game press conference to the fans, nothing. No explanation. He was just - gone. That soured most fans against him more than the loss of the game did. At least grow a set and show up and say what you *think* happened.

Regardless, Cunningham sure was fun to watch that year. I saw them live in the preseason that year at Foxboro and have lots of pics from that game. I have Randy Moss wearing #18. What really strikes me is how long Cunningham's arms are. They're about down to his knees. I wonder if that contributed to his beautifully thrown passes. He didn't play well in 1999 (Jeff George era) but I'll always have fond memories of RC. I sometimes wonder if he's back in Vegas again with the tile business. :-)

What's the mood like up in the state of MN? You should visit our forum: www.kansasviking.com It's the largest Vikings forum that I'm aware of on the 'net. A really great guy named Mike runs the site. The majority of us who were on Usenet in the newsgroup alt.sports.football.mn-vikings defected over to Mike's site when he got it up and running (lot better troll control). We're having a good discussion with Crimeboyz fans there.

What do you think our chances are next week? If it weren't my birthday, I'd probably stay at home and watch it so I wouldn't have to worry about my cursing (there's only so much I'll do in front of my parents). I'll either be cheering or effing a lot (in my mind, anyway). I'm not usually one to curse often (well, I probably did about 5 years' worth of swearing when I broke my foot) but when I see the Vikes fall apart, I get mad. But one thing we have now that we have not had in years is the 2 minute offense. If the score is close, never ever count Favre out.

What do you think of the bald Eagle, Childress? Is he a good enough coach to outcoach Phillips and Whisenhunt (Cards)or Payton (Saints)?

We all knew at some point in the season, things were going way too well for Favre. We had seen him lay eggs before at the Dome, and he did it at least 1-2 games every season. We all knew he had a bad game or two coming at some point in the season, and he had them, so hopefully he's gotten them over with and we can play like we did against the gnats.

I also didn't think we'd have crap for receivers. Rice and Harvin? One word: Wow. I'm still not 100% sold on Berrian. Yeah, I know - he's had hammie problems. I have the same problem - it feels like my hamstrings are about 2 inches too short for my legs and I can't even do a straight leg raising test without them hurting so I do sympathize with him but I want to see more production out of him before I'll be convinced. Schiancoe is my buddy and favorite player on offense. Cool name, great hands, great all around player. We haven't had a TE this good in quite awhile. And our defense? Well, Pat Williams is 37. He's not going to be around much longer regardless. He said he'd retire if we won the SB and if not, we might have him one more year (linemen usually retire around their mid 30's). I have never in my life see a guy his size (approx. 350 lbs) run so fast. I think Kevin Williams needs to step up his game a little and I've been impressed with Edwards - he actually has stepped up his game with the injury to Pat Williams. Now, here's my favorite defensive guy - Jared Allen. He's like a player on meth, crack, speed and a factory's worth of ADHD medication all at the same time for the entire game. He NEVER winds down. I don't know how he does it. I just loved seeing him hanging all over Aaron Rodgers during both our meetings this year. I almost expected Rodgers to be wearing Allen's jersey by the end of the game.

Our linebackers aren't bad. They don't put fear into any offense's hearts but they're a young group and I think they have a lot of potential. Greenway and Leber have stepped up their game too.

My big worry is McKinnie. Over the past 2-3 years or so, he has just looked lazy to me at times. I read yesterday that he's been hurt, nothing major, but he's been dinged up throughout the season and he's better after the bye week. He's going up against a good Dallas D (I believe he'll be opposite Demarcus Ware) and he's protecting Favre's blind side. He better bring his A game. He frustrates me so much sometimes that I even start to miss good old Todd "False Start" Steussie. LOL.

As it stands, our offensive line, which gave Favre so much time in the middle of the season, is one of our 2 biggest liabilities, IMO. The other is our defensive backs. OK. I've seen some good plays from them against opposing WRs but why in the world can't the Vikings cover tight ends? It's maddening.

Okay. That's office my very already nervous chest.

BTW, when I was living in CT, Chuck Foreman came to a local sports store for an autograph signing. A bunch of Vikings fans showed up early and as soon as we saw him, we froze. Everyone was afraid to approach him. We finally went up to him and dang - he is just the nicest guy in the world (well, him and Tony Dungy). He talked to us for the longest time and I have 2 big pics of me standing next to him. His legs are about the size of my waist. And I like to take one of the pics to show to people who don't know me very well and have never seen my husband. Here's me - all of 5'4", 115 lbs - and Caucasian, and I'm standing next to this *huge* former NFL great player who is black. Our arms around each other (well, I thought for sure I was going to faint standing next to him so it might be more him holding me up - LOL). The reactions are priceless. Usually, people are at a loss for words. I just laugh hysterically about it. It was really great meeting him.

Oh well - 5 days and counting. Please, Vikes, give me a really really super duper nice birthday present.
