Advice on how to start selling on eBay?

Posted: Jul 10, 2013

I've bought things off eBay for years and now I'd like to start selling, but whenI've started the Sellers Tutorial on eBay there seem to be so many things to know regarding getting payment, how to list, taking good pics, etc. that I feel overwhelmed. Can anybody de-mystify the procedure for me?

;

It's more simple now than ever - sm

I used to sell on Ebay wayyy back in the day and did really well. Now, it's actually MUCH easier than then.

~Regarding payment: Make sure you set up a Paypal account. I'm not sure they accept anything else now anyway, but that way you get your money right away. If you are a new seller Paypal does hold your money until your item safely arrives with the buyer. Once the buyer gives you feedback or you provide tracking information, they will release your funds.

~How to List: You just follow the category lists they have and then describing your item, make sure you list as many "key words" in there that you can as far as describing your item. That way basically anything someone types in relating to your item, yours will pop up.

~Taking good pics: Just make sure you have nice bright close-ups. A backdrop is really good to make your item stand out. I used to get a big black or white sheet, lay it across the floor and put my items on it for the pics. Seeing your item only and not the sofa or coffee table in the background just adds to the attraction of it.

Good luck:)

Good points! I would also add - another eBayer

Make sure you take photos of your item from every direction and describe any defects very well, as you can have items returned for not "being as described." It's really a lot, lot easier to get started than it was back in the late 90s. Good luck!

A few tips - eBay seller

I've been selling on eBay since 2006. :)
Things don't sell for as much as they used to back in the hay-day, but it's still a good way to make extra $ and get rid of your stuff.

--The first thing I do is look up the item I want to sell using the "completed listings" option. This will show you auctions for your item that have ended and what it sold for (including shipping costs). I always do this to get an idea of what I can expect from my listing.

--Also look at their pictures and description. If you like them, try to follow their lead. But also ask yourself what would make them better.

--It's okay to overcharge for shipping a little bit. For every item you sell, you pay a fee based on the final price. Since the price of shipping isn't included when figuring your fees, this is a way for you to save a few pennies. Lower your auction price and raise your shipping price. It will balance out in the end for the buyer, but you pay less fees (yes, it is sneaky).

Raising shipping fees - Ebay

Be careful with that. If a person receives a package and they see that it costs $3.00 to ship, but you charged $5.00, then they often times will leave you bad feedback stating that. Bad feedback will cause other shoppers to bypass your auction and choose a seller with more positive feedback.

Also, Ebay does random audits and if THEY see you are upping your shipping price in order to lower your auction price, then they will warn you not to continue this and may eventually close your account.

It isn't "sneaky" it is downright dishonest. Doing that is basically tricking buyers into thinking you are offering them a better deal, having them passing up on the auction before yours (The honest person) in order to buy yours at a cheaper price, when you are just charging them the original price behind their back.

Just treat your buyers how you would want to be treated if you were buying on there and you should be good.

Since all the prices are right there, buyers - know exactly what they're spending.

It's dishonest toward eBay yes, but not toward the buyers. I have hundreds of feedback and not a single negative. I've been doing this for 7 years and never had a problem.

The shipping price covers shipping AND handling. So there should never be a complaint about the shipping price not exactly matching the postage on the box. I think most buyers realize that.

Update On How EBay Is Going For Me!Jun 05, 2014
Hi everyone.  I haven't been back to MTStars in many months.  I see so many who are depressed and broke (and understandably so). Back last year, I wrote several posts about how I had started selling on eBay.  I got the idea from here, the Gab board, after seeing a woman post that she sold $800 on eBay in her first month.  EBay is continuing for me, and now I've added selling books on Amazon too.  After a lot of trying different things and making a lot of mista ...

Ebay As An Alternative?Sep 11, 2015
I just typed a report where the patient significantly reduced her stress by quitting her job and selling stuff on Ebay. I know I read somewhere on here something about this but I don't remember if it said what people sell. I tried selling my own art that I created on Ebay and Etsy and I made about $40 a month for a couple of months and that is before the fees etc. Mostly I made nothing. I sure envy the artists on both of those sites that make decent livings. I added up the past items s ...

My Brother To The (eBay) RescueApr 18, 2014
Sell stuff on eBay!  Etsy!  Amazon.com!  Wave of future!  Etc etc etc.... I signed up with eBay (again), start getting those emails about how easy it is to sell stuff, so EASY to upload pics, write description, discount, etc...OVERwhelming. So my brother comes over, sees the stuff I'm making, and says nonchalantly, "I bet I could sell that on eBay."  (He sells stuff on Amazon AND eBay).  And I was like, "oh you could, could you?"  So he had his camera, t ...

Update On My EBay SalesAug 05, 2015
Hello. It's been at least a year since I wrote several posts regarding making extra money by selling on eBay. I haven't been back here in so long, and yet I still see many struggling. When I first started selling, my initial goal was to at least be able to pay my utilities with my eBay money. Then it became paying my rent. My rent is $845. For the month of July (which is the S-L-O-W time on eBay), I had gross sales of $843. Now, eBay and PayPal took their 13.5% cut (combined ...

EBay Refuses Auction For Accused Killer Of Abortion DoctorOct 29, 2009
Online auction house eBay has blocked an auction that would have raised funds for Scott Roeder, the man accused of killing abortion doctor George Tiller in Wichita, Kansas, earlier this year. According to a report at the Kansas City Star, Iowa anti-abortion activist Dave Leach had been organizing the auction, which would have sold off items such as a manual that instructs, among other things, on how to bomb abortion clinics, as well as a prison cookbook written by a person jailed for abortion c ...

Selling A CarJan 09, 2013
I have a 2006 Hyundai that I bought used about 6 months ago. It's a decent car, but it is manual transmission and it is just not working out. I like driving it but no one else does, so it is just sitting in my driveway. We decided to sell it outright and look for an automatic transmission car. The husband wants a Honda Pilot. We currently own a 2007 Honda Odyssey, old 1990 Ford truck, and the Tucson. This couple contacted me, looked at the car, offered $900 less from my asking, which I acc ...

Anyone Have Experience Selling Coins?Jun 28, 2011
I recently discovered that some old money I have had for decades is actually worth something.  Most of it is US silver coins, but I have some old foreign money both coin and banknotes that are selling on EBay for thousands times their face value.   I know there is a difference between what a coin dealer will give you and what the money retails for, but I really can't invest the time in putting them up for auction myself.  But, I don't want to give them away.&nb ...

Selling House And Moving After Feb 26, 2017
It looks like I may have to sell the house before I lose it due to lack of income.  It has about 30 grand in equity, in the state it is in (50 with 15 g of work).  But, the task seems to daunting due to my age (59), I am virtually alone, and I have no idea where to move except out of California.  The problem may not be unfamiliar to others in our industry so maybe you can relate.  Though I have no real bills other than the mtg and utilities, I have very little accessible cash ...

How can I protect myself there, make sure I don't send someone something and not be paid, at least be as cautious as possible. TIA for all suggestions. ...

Vent On Girl Scouts And Cookie Selling - SmMar 09, 2010
Just a vent, frustrated at one my younger daugher's troop leaders.  They have a goal of 170 boxes per girl to sell.  Generally if she gets 30 boxes on her own we are lucky  I drive them to all the neighbors (14), and hit up grandparents (have agreement with siblings not to bug them with this sort of stuff), and we sell about 60 boxes that way.  But.I have two daughers in two different troops.  So I take them out soliciting here and they split the sales.&nb ...
