Selling a car

Posted: Jan 9, 2013

I have a 2006 Hyundai that I bought used about 6 months ago. It's a decent car, but it is manual transmission and it is just not working out. I like driving it but no one else does, so it is just sitting in my driveway. We decided to sell it outright and look for an automatic transmission car. The husband wants a Honda Pilot. We currently own a 2007 Honda Odyssey, old 1990 Ford truck, and the Tucson.

This couple contacted me, looked at the car, offered $900 less from my asking, which I accepted because it was an okay price with Kelly Blue Book. They required an inspection before they bought it. I am okay with that - as long as they pay for it. They said okay but wanted to choose the mechanic. I was all right with that also but checked to see if this was a legitimate mechanic (and it was).

Mechanic checks the car over thoroughly for 1-1/2 hours. He compliments me on the condition of the car but says it needs a tune up and timing belt. Cost is $798. I had just changed the timing belt in my Honda Odyssey for less than that, and my niece had a complete timing belt, water pump, etc on her CRV for $600 done the week before. Well, okay, whatever, I am not authorizing any work; it's just an inspection.

Then I get an email saying the couple will not buy the car unless I decrease the cost by another $800 to pay for the cost of the mechanic's assessment. At that point, I refused and said that the condition was AS IS and I had already decreased my asking price by $900. I could not decrease the cost anymore. I emailed that I would have no bad feelings towards them if they refuse to buy the car.

Well, a flurry of nasty emails from this couple! Saying I cheated them, lied about the condition of the car, and got a free inspection and now want me to pay for the inspection. I told them to forget it and not contact me anymore; I am not stupid; and THEY were scamming ME. I deleted the craigslist posting and I am just going to keep the damn car. But, I am getting the car looked at by a mechanic we know who is honest and owns his own shop. Over the phone, he said as long as there are no other problems a timing belt and other drive belts runs about $300 to $400 for parts and labor. (This guy did a rebuilt transmission for us a couple years ago, and he came so highly recommended that we had to wait for an opening in his shop.) Then I called the Hyundai dealer, who I do not like, but they quoted the exact same list of repairs as $700 if the work is needed.

I've sold cars before but have never had this happen to me before. It's very upsetting!!! Any other horror stories from others? I would be interested to know. I do not think I will ever go through craigslist again.

and did everything right. I've never sold a car but understood that it's the buyer's responsibility to have it checked out by a mechanic, and that a used car is sold "as is."

However, if you ever change your mind and decide to sell your Hyundai, you will have no problem finding a buyer, sorry you had an unpleasant experience. Any time I sold a car and was aware that it needed work, I had it done and paid for it myself before putting it on the market, or was up front with the buyer about it. You are going to need to get the timing belt replaced anyway as it's routine maintenance, so that has become a non-issue. Dealers are notorious for charging more than independent shops, so it is no surprise that the Hyundai dealer charges more than your independent mechanic. Also, the price he is quoting you may not be what you actually pay once they get under the hood. I wouldn't trust anyone else to take my car anywhere, unless I went with them, there are too many car thefts these days, you're lucky those people brought it back undamaged.

Thanks for the kind responses. To clarify, I drove my car to the mechanic and waited during the inspection. I would never allow strangers to drive my car. While showing and test driving, I always have a family member with me, usually my scary looking oldest son.

The timing belt was a surprise to me, but I had assumed that it didn't need changed until over 100K miles but Hyundai cars require it at 60,000 miles. We had the car serviced, new tires, and battery before listing for sale. I will have the car looked at on Friday and have the timing belt changed. We have decided to keep it for the time being and trade it in on a Honda Pilot later in the year.

Good choice - Random thoughts

Don't laugh - I drive a 1994 Honda Civic that I purchased new. It now has 150K miles and still purrs like a kitten. I know that the timing belt service interval for Hondas is every 60K but they have to do the water pump and some other things at the same time, $$$. I usually go to the dealer as I've found that independent mechanics tend to overlook things, hence the cheaper price, but that's only my experience. Pilots are good, I also like the CRVs.

Anyone Have Experience Selling Coins?Jun 28, 2011
I recently discovered that some old money I have had for decades is actually worth something.  Most of it is US silver coins, but I have some old foreign money both coin and banknotes that are selling on EBay for thousands times their face value.   I know there is a difference between what a coin dealer will give you and what the money retails for, but I really can't invest the time in putting them up for auction myself.  But, I don't want to give them away.&nb ...

Selling House And Moving After Feb 26, 2017
It looks like I may have to sell the house before I lose it due to lack of income.  It has about 30 grand in equity, in the state it is in (50 with 15 g of work).  But, the task seems to daunting due to my age (59), I am virtually alone, and I have no idea where to move except out of California.  The problem may not be unfamiliar to others in our industry so maybe you can relate.  Though I have no real bills other than the mtg and utilities, I have very little accessible cash ...

Question About Selling Stuff On LineJul 04, 2015
I have quite a bit of clutter and am considering selling on ebay, craigslist, etc. I have never done this before, either bought or sold. I have read the tips on craigslist about dealing locally, meeting in a very public place, what not to accept as payment, etc. - all great information. What about if it use ebay? How can I protect myself there, make sure I don't send someone something and not be paid, at least be as cautious as possible. TIA for all suggestions. ...

Vent On Girl Scouts And Cookie Selling - SmMar 09, 2010
Just a vent, frustrated at one my younger daugher's troop leaders.  They have a goal of 170 boxes per girl to sell.  Generally if she gets 30 boxes on her own we are lucky  I drive them to all the neighbors (14), and hit up grandparents (have agreement with siblings not to bug them with this sort of stuff), and we sell about 60 boxes that way.  But.I have two daughers in two different troops.  So I take them out soliciting here and they split the sales.&nb ...
