Has anyone here stayed in a homeless shelter?

Posted: Feb 20, 2013

If so, what was the experience like for you?  Did they help you with job, food stamps, finding a place to live?  Or did you just stay there till you could get yourself out of your mess.

Just wondering.

It was my brother-in-law's girlfriend at the time. Her and my brother-in-law got into an altercation that became physical. They were at my house, so I called her sister to come and get her and her sister called the police who took her to a women's homeless shelter.

They did offer many services as far as work placement and helping with benefits, etc. She actually was a veteran, so they ended up hooking her up with a program through VA services where she got a job training K9 dogs. She also was put into income-based housing and I am not sure if that was through the VA or the shelter, but the shelter helped set it all up. She is doing great these days, by the way.

I did email a shelter today - wheres_my_job

They explained their process, and said I could come in for a prescreening. So I'm going to - why not - if worse comes to worse (I hope it doesn't) at least I'll have some idea what it will be like.

It's great you were able to intervene and help your BIL's girlfriend out of a tight spot. Good for you, and good for her.

Well I may be crazy, BUT - sm

I kind of believe in "you get what you put out there" kind of like the book "The Secret". I DEFINITELY would not go interviewing homeless shelters "just in case" I have to go to one some day. Tell yourself you WILL NOT have to go to one and figure out what to do to stay out of them.

I don't know your history, are you an out-of-work MT? Have you tried other at-home jobs? More and more companies are going to hiring people to work from home and these companies pay HOURLY not on production or commission. Some big corporations even have their marketing departments as people working from home now.

I know that hospitals also are contracting out many of their departments to work-at-home companies also. There is a company you can google called Newcorp and they employ people from home and I know several people who work for them. There is another one called Westinghouse. I know those two are legit for sure.

Good luck to you and I hope you find something soon.

Here in San Antonio there is a huge homeless shelter that has a lot of programs to help people, even has a drug rehab program and another program for the mentally ill. I have never been in one because thankfully I have always had family willing to help me out but I would hope that most homeless shelter know the available resources that are out there.

It's the same thing out here.. - wheres_my_job

I thought there would be a bunch of little disconnected shelters, but apparently they all band together into one "system." I wish they got more funding, there was more of a floor under people...meaning, it would be GREAT for people to get help before it was a full-blown crisis!

I don't know where you live, but I too feel like I will end up in a homeless shelter. I feel like I'd rather kill myself than live with anyone I know, ie; family, old boyfriends, girlfriends with mean boyfriends. But if you want to email me privately maybe you and I can figure something out. Or if you need to talk. I only live in a tiny apartment and I dont know how I will pay next month's rent. I am working on getting some unemployment for working part time hours during a full-time schedule, that I have to click on OOW about 20 times a day. I'm 60 years old and cannot wait till next year to retire and be less stressed out when working part time. I live in Ohio.

well over a year now, probably pushing 2 years. She actually moves from one to another ever so often, as I think they have time limits. She has a 4-year degree and can't find a job flipping burgers. Really nice girl too.

I think the biggest issue you might have is internet access, assuming you plan to do MT from there. Around here, if they have any, it is only in the library and definitely not high speed...probably have time limits on use so everyone gets a chance. Most residents need it to apply for jobs and benefits. If the shelter doesn't have it, the residents go to the public library to do those things.

I do hope it doesn't come to that for you. You might talk to the shelter's managers about them or some other agency sponsoring one of their more stable residents to rent a room from you in your home...wouldn't just pick one myself, but they would know who is a safe risk. Good luck

Public libraries usually do have high-speed internet. Our little library out in the middle of nowhere has fast 'net and wifi. You can sit out in the parking lot and use the wifi on your laptop, free. There are only time limits if you're using the library's computers. Also, a lot of McDonald's and other fast food places have free wifi now.

Volunteering At Animal ShelterNov 17, 2009
I'm thinking about volunteering at my local animal shelter, but I'm having conflicting feelings.  I'm a MAJOR animal lover, and I'm not sure if I can see animals in those conditions with nobody to love them and still be able to function and sleep at night without bringing them all home with me.  I have 3 dogs and 2 cats of my own, and definitely would not have anymore room for another animal.  I just want to feel like I helped and did a little bit of good for t ...

A Pilot Program At Our Local ShelterFeb 27, 2015
A few days ago our volunteer coordinator at our local animal shelter sent out an email informing us of a new program to help the dogs. I wanted to share this with everyone, and maybe if your shelters don't offer it, you could suggest it. The program is called Dog's Day Out. Any volunteer at our shelter who is a dog walker (must show up regularly) and has had at least one year experience at doing so, may now take a dog out of the shelter for an entire day. If enough people take adva ...

Kids, Ex, Pretty Much Homeless... Advice?Jun 09, 2010
I broke it off with my ex about 3 months ago which, believe me, was a wonderful thing.  It seemed at the end he ignored everyone and his primary goal in life was working and then smoking pot and passing out at home.  I really had no where to go.  I moved from GA to TN in with my parents.  So for a little while there were 7 of us in a 3bd/1bath house.  My mom works 3rd shift and I couldnt find a place to live fast enough so we decided to let the kids go visit their dad in ...

Pics Of Kids Reading To Cats In Cat ShelterJul 04, 2014
I came across this site (don't remember how, a link off of a link off of a link, etc).  Anyway...thought these were adoreable pics of kids reading to cats in shelters while they wait to be adopted.  I think it's a great program. The site itself I like.  It's about books and there is a tab off to the right that you can sign up and get some books for free others for really cheap on the kindle or whatever type of reading device you might have. Hope you enjoy the site ...

Homeless Man Gifted Boots Has Already Sold Them, IllustratingDec 03, 2012
From Salon.com: The image of NYPD officer Larry Deprimo giving a pair of new boots to a homeless man in Times Square became an online sensation when the NYPD posted the tourist’s photo to Facebook. The reality of how the story played out, however, further illustrates that one heartwarming picture can offer a misleading narrative about the challenges of homelessness in New York. The New York Times found the homeless man in the picture – identified him as Jeffrey Hillma ...

Have Your Siblings Changed Over The Years Or Stayed The Same?Jan 12, 2010
Or do you find that you have changed?  Do you get along with them or have anything in common with them?   After a recent death in the family I just talked to my sister.  Her comments were almost, not cruel, but just not caring.  She says it was probably an inconvenience to my aunt that my cousin died.  Granted cus' and mom have not had a very close relationship over the years, but I would never doubt the love a mother has for her children (I'm not a mother) n ...

Don't See Maher And Matthews Feeding The Hungry, Sheltering The Homeless? Feb 05, 2012
Bringing this up from thread below, where right-winger rant is ongoing.  Typically, the poster is mindlessly pulling stuff out of thin air and making wildly uninformed claims, which obviously have not been researched.  I'm always more than happy to accommodate this sort of information deficit.
