Volunteering at Animal Shelter

Posted: Nov 17, 2009

I'm thinking about volunteering at my local animal shelter, but I'm having conflicting feelings.  I'm a MAJOR animal lover, and I'm not sure if I can see animals in those conditions with nobody to love them and still be able to function and sleep at night without bringing them all home with me.  I have 3 dogs and 2 cats of my own, and definitely would not have anymore room for another animal.  I just want to feel like I helped and did a little bit of good for the animals, but I'm afraid I'll get too attached to them.  Anyone ever have this experience that can offer some advice?

I was a foster home for dogs for several years. There are times when you get attached, but it is a wonderful day to see a dog go to a permanent, loving home. The heartache of seeing them go is only temporary. The feeling of having done some good in the world lasts forever. I am so glad I did it.

If you found a no kill shelter it would be best for you. I, like you, wanted to do exactly the same but knew my limits. I rescue with a lady who goes 1 day a week to help out at a shelter and she tells me it is really some back breaking work- she is in her 20s compared to my 60s and a real go-getter. You could foster as rescue groups always need fostering and that way there would be no putting down of any animals. Try to find either 1 of those 2 things I suggested- either a no kill shelter or fostering. Those will be your best choices, I would think. I can hardly read CLs here in town because of the sad things the shelters say and show about animals that have not even started their lives being put down. Good wishes to you!

Anyone have any fundraising ideas? - MT4Eight

I thought maybe I could help more with the fundraising end of things. I have some good ideas to start with, but I thought since everyone on here has such good ideas, maybe you all could come up with some more interesting things.

Some of our best resulting fundraisers for similar causes: Pet fashion show (the adoptable, friendly proven pets at the shelter put on a "fashion show" on adoption day) The public pays a small fee to watch or brings in a donation. The adoption fee is discounted.

Motorcycle "run". Volunteer for the adoption center to be a "stop" for your local motorcycle community during a fund raiser and bring donations. OR ask your local MC coalition if they would hold a fundraiser for your cause specifically. (BIG bucks!) These events are open to public and generally get air time too.

"Spa for paws". Ask a busy local spa if you can take some of your animals to their establishment and ask public to make donations for "pedicures". Bring mobile adoption van and discount adoption fees...

Those are some really good ideas - especially - MT4Eight

the motorcycle run one. Bike runs are very big in our area, as I live in the home of Thunder in the Valley (a big motorcycle rally held here). Like the fashion show and pedicures too!!
Thanks for the ideas.

A Pilot Program At Our Local ShelterFeb 27, 2015
A few days ago our volunteer coordinator at our local animal shelter sent out an email informing us of a new program to help the dogs. I wanted to share this with everyone, and maybe if your shelters don't offer it, you could suggest it. The program is called Dog's Day Out. Any volunteer at our shelter who is a dog walker (must show up regularly) and has had at least one year experience at doing so, may now take a dog out of the shelter for an entire day. If enough people take adva ...

Pics Of Kids Reading To Cats In Cat ShelterJul 04, 2014
I came across this site (don't remember how, a link off of a link off of a link, etc).  Anyway...thought these were adoreable pics of kids reading to cats in shelters while they wait to be adopted.  I think it's a great program. The site itself I like.  It's about books and there is a tab off to the right that you can sign up and get some books for free others for really cheap on the kindle or whatever type of reading device you might have. Hope you enjoy the site ...

We have stray cats that come around our neighborhood and we've been feeding them.  I know, I know, a mistake, but they were little kittens at the time mostly and so cute.  Now that mating season is upon us, I think there are about 2 or 3 pregnant ones.  I know I shouldn't have started this, but how do I stop?  I don't know if any of the other neighbors feed them or not, and it will make me sick if I see them starving.  What to do?  Sometimes there are ...

Purina and PetSmart really both need a pat on the back.
