A friend asked me the other day....

Posted: Oct 7, 2016

She said I have a strange question to ask you, and now don't laugh.  But, a lot of my friends and neighbors are stockpiling food and water.  Are you doing that?  Should I be doing that?

After reading the below documents, news reports, and my peers' comments on this page, my answer is ABSOLUTELY!  The question is now, when will we need it, what will be the circumstances.  It is so odd.  I have been writing a novel for about 5 years now (yeah, need to get it done, but keeping editing, rewriting, etc and putting off), and my book is so coming true.

Batten down the hatches!

Disaster can come in many different forms - both natural and man-made.

We live in a society that is utterly dependent on a complex framework of infrastructure that's much more fragile than we care to think about.

It's only prudent to provide the means by which you and your family can survive for at least several weeks without the support of this infrastructure if it becomes impossible to get water from the tap, electricity from the plug, food from the grocery store, medications from the pharmacy...or protection and medical aid from the police and emergency services.

We have been reading and preparing for when the SHTF. - I've larned how to sew, can, fix my own

stuff when I can. We stockpile toilet paper, food, Band-Aids, pet food, duct tape.

We live in the country so we plan to bug in rather than bug out. We tried living off the grid for a week. It's hard especially in the winter, but at least I know what to expect. It's easy to get distracted with all the drama today.

It's sad that someone has to even ask this. - sm

Absolutely everyone should have food, water, medication and first aid supplies, and whatever else they need to survive at least 1 week without power or water. (Obvious additional needs are something to cook with, waterless soap and shampoo, a way to launder at least some clothes, provision for sanitation without a flush toilet, something for heat if they're in a cold climate, and lights and a radio with AM, FM, and shortwave bands that can be powered off batteries, the sun, or with a crank.)

If you live anywhere you know is prone to natural disaster, at least a month of food and water would be better, and you should probably have a tent and sleeping bags. The ideal would be if everyone would act like the 7th Day Adventists and try to have a stockpile of a year of everything needed for their family.

You should have at least 6 months supply of food and water. The, you won't have - to deal with this...

Two women became embroiled in a brutal scrap over the last case of water in a supermarket ahead of Hurricane Matthew , its reported.

The can be seen repeatedly battering and pulling each others hair in the middle of a Walmart store, apparently after one of them put the store's last water bottles in her trolley.

The taller of the two women then grabs a trolley and starts ramming it into the other woman, forcing her into a display unit where she crashes into several boxes.

She then turns and starts throwing the packages at the woman behind the trolley, who in turn charges towards her.

I have stockpiled a couple years now. I have about 30 gallons of water (not enough) and lots of rice, beans, canned foods, et cetera that we could survive on if need be. You just never know WHAT could happen, and stores only have food for about two days before they are completely wiped out. Rice and beans are cheap and keep along time. No reason to not have at least that along with water. I store in 5 gallon containers. I keep a few medical supplies around as well and things like matches, lanterns, et cetera.

I recommend a site called The Survival Mom. - It's focusd on women and

My Best FriendDec 27, 2010
I just need to unload some of this now.  My best friend, Jane (whom I have literally know since kindergarten) had a serious bout of depression about two months ago.  She called me one evening telling me she had a meltdown at work.  She told me at that time she was suicidal.  I asked if she had a plan.  She said she did.  That terrified me, and I talked to her that night on the phone urging her to get help.  She did just that.  She is now seeing a therapist ...

I Can't Seem To Let My Friend Help MeDec 10, 2010
I have a wonderful friend who happens to have a husband worth millions.  I live quite far below poverty level.  I'm a single mom and I do make ends meet, bills are paid, child is happy, we truly do have everything we need.  My car is paid for and I easily manage my tiny mortgage.  Here's the thing -- a couple of months ago part of my tooth broke away from the filling and I really need dental care (of course, I have no insurance).  My dear friend insists on ...

Friend Needs HelpApr 04, 2011
I have a friend who is dire need of some kinds of help, and I don't know what to suggest for him. He's a guy in his late 50's, and a few weeks ago he had a terrible bike accident.  It was nighttime, he was in the city, and he hit some kind of a curb or a barrier, and went flying.  He was pretty sure he dislocated his hip, and sprained both wrists.  The problem is that he's currently unemployed, and has no health insurance.  Apparently he was alone when i ...

Friend With OCDMay 24, 2013
Hi all, One of hubby's co-workers has OCD, by her own admission. Hubby and I have come to enjoy her and her husban'd company socially, as they're quite fun, but she drives us all nuts. Her mouth doesn't stop talking, and it's not just normal talking. Everything that happens is a spiral downhill of some sort of tragedy. Her dog was constipated, so he has a tumor in his bowel; her husband had dark circles under his eyes, so he ate too much bacon (?!!). A lot of it (like t ...

I've Asked My Husband To Move Out And He Will Not Go. What Would You Do?Jun 05, 2011
Here's the back story.  He's a bum.  He hasn't held a job since 2005 when he was discharged from active duty.  He is bipolar and is an alcoholic, both of which have escalated to the point where I am completely and totally done.  I do not wish to live with him any longer.  He has done nothing but making promises of quitting drinking, getting jobs, and being a better husband and father and never makes good.  In the past year or so, he has also started l ...

I Asked A Simple Question Oct 10, 2012
I asked if someone could help me find Romney's tax plan.  Only one person was able to help by sending me to the Romney site after a whole lot of unhelpful comments about my research skills.  Thank you to that person.  (Thank you as well for the other links, I appreciate your effort, but I wanted it straight from the horse's mouth). So, I checked it out, and here is what I found: Make permanent, across-the-board 20 percent cut in marginal rates Maintain cur ...

Almost Mother's Day And Asked For SimpleMay 08, 2013
Going out of town for awhile in a couple of months, coming back in on a Sunday night around 8:30. I asked my daughter if she could pick me up. I would call her as soon as the plane landed so she would not have to wait and just pick me up in front. She responded that she would have to take the next day off from work because she would be too tired. I asked her if she was saying she had to be off for picking me up and her response was "if you want my help you get it my way." I told her to not bothe ...

My boy was invited to his cousin's B-day party over the weekend.  I invited my friend's son to join my boy so he wouldn't be the only boy at the party, since this was basically an all-girl party.  (My boy is 9, the other is 7).   We were only at my brother's place for a few minutes when "Billy" went right to my brother's wallet and started going thru it.  I said, "Hey, get out of there, you don't go into people's wallets."  H ...

BF Best Friend Is A WomanJun 18, 2010
Really I have never felt so insecure about anything like this before.  I'm usually the laid back person.  I was cheated on in my last relationship and I think that changed everything for me.  Anyways, I have been seeing this guy and we are about to move in together on the 22nd actually.  His best friend is a girl.  In fact he has had this friend for so long, even through his ex-wife.  His best friend never liked his ex.  I really have never met this woman ...

My Friend Has Been In A Relationship With ManJun 24, 2010
My friend has been in a relationship with a man who is about ten years older than herself for about a year or so. They live together. He works for an employer who has offered to pay for him and the rest of the employees of the small, all male staff, to go on a cruise. She is a bit miffed at the thought of him cruising without her, so she has decided to go on a trip upstate for a week by herself. Neither one of them are the 'fooling around' types, she is just mad that he gets a cru ...

Losing My FriendMay 12, 2012
Last July I posted about my friend, Fran.   She had been taken to the hospital with an infection, then underwent open heart surgery followed by a long list of compications.  She had insulin dependent diabetes since she was five years of age.  Fran never made it home from the hospital, and spent many months in a nursing home.  Today I got the call that she died Friday morning.  Although I am thankful her suffering is at an end, I am feeling so empty and t ...

My friend doesn't want me to go into detail, but her son is going to have a long rehab and she is not hopeful that he will be back to normal if at all. Lost A FriendJan 14, 2014
I wonder if this has happened to anyone? I really need to vent about this, so if this long, sorry. Last year about June, my best friend moved across country. We used to be close like sisters. In fact, she often considered me her sister. I was her only female friend in this part of the country. She had been through so much with me. It was the kind of relationship that if we didn't speak for a couple of months or so, one of us would call and it was like we had spoken just yesterday. ...
