How fast can he kill the economy? Take a guess.

A poll of sorts.  Who needs Congress anyway?  Most dictators don't even HAVE a Congress.

it's wise to take lessons from history so we don't repeat our mistakes. The consequences of self-interested short-sightedness can lead to catastrophic outcomes that we would do well to avoid. I think that's reasonable.

You do realize Manhattan is an island, right? Nevermind about - the rest of NY and NJ...

[ In Reply To ..]
what do you think will happen to the economy if Manhattan is under water? Not just the top part, but the bottom part that everyone uses to get around.

I was born and raised on LI. I've never in my life seen the kind of damage that I saw with Sandy. If Manhattan takes a hit like SI, Jersey, or parts of LI did, or if the oceans rise because folks find coal, etc., too delicious to give up, you don't think that will have an impact on the economy? Oh, please is right.

Exactly! Or when tornadoes that stay on the ground for 30 minutes lay waste from Louisiana to Illinois . . . or they frack southern California right off into the ocean, or the ozone finally goes (and it will) and every living creature is crispy fried, or the whole planet just gets sucked into some antimatter black hole, which would of course make the list of disasters waiting to happen moot, to say the least. We are approaching the point, if we haven't already gone way past it, where irreparable damage has been done to this planet.

If you like your electricity, you have to accept coal.... - Rose

[ In Reply To ..]
What is U.S. electricity generation by energy source?
In 2012, the United States generated about 4,054 billion kilowatthours of electricity. About 68% of the electricity generated was from fossil fuel (coal, natural gas, and petroleum), with 37% attributed from coal.

Energy sources and percent share of total electricity generation in 2012 were:

•Coal 37%
•Natural Gas 30%
•Nuclear 19%
•Hydropower 7%
•Other Renewable 5%
•Biomass 1.42%
•Geothermal 0.41%
•Solar 0.11%
•Wind 3.46%
•Petroleum 1%
•Other Gases < 1%

if you like your planet, you have to accept - innovation

[ In Reply To ..]

Huh? - Rose

[ In Reply To ..]
Producers of electricity from coal are innovators - if they were not, they would be out of business decades ago. They are constantly changing to meet the standards set by the government. What the current administration wants is for the coal-fired electricity generating plants to be shut down today, yesterday would be even better. If you don't want to benefit from electricity generated by carbon fuels, then turn off your lights, your television, refrigerator, air conditioner, throw away your cell phone, park your car, and stay home from work because everything you do in your daily life takes advantage of the cheap electricity created from fossil fuels. I am all for renewable energy, but it isn't enough for our energy-hungry country to live on
like I said - ...
[ In Reply To ..]
we have to embrace innovation and come up with some serious alternatives to carbon-based energy.

Producers of electricity from coal were innovators of their day. Can you imagine if industry, government, and citizens just looked at those guys, threw up their hands, and said it couldn't be done? We are America. We can continue to innovate. What's wrong with that?
Nobody is saying innovation is wrong. What they are saying - Truthhurts
[ In Reply To ..]
is that the other forms of energy are not ready for prime time, yet Obama wants to kill the coal-fired electric plants almost immediately. Even Biden, who was born in coal country, stated during the first campaign that they were going to kill coal.

You all are having fits because of unemployment....how many people will be thrown out of work if he shuts down the coal industry tomorrow?

Are you willing to do without heat in the winter? Are you willing to give up cooking except outside on an open fire? Do you really want to go back to caveman times? What about the fancy electric car? Will it be parked in the driveway forever?

Coal-fired plants are complying with the rules in place now. Obama wants the rules tightened even more so that coal-fired plants will not be able to afford the upgrades necessary to comply. He did state they can build coal-fired plants but he would make sure they would be bankrupted. Is that really what you want to see now?

As for climate change, the planet's climate goes through cycles of hot and cold every few millenniums. It's been shown by archeologists through the earth layers. Sand found where there is no water. How do you think Salt Lake got it's salt? The earth expels it's energy through earthquakes and volcanoes when things heat up too much. Is that happening now? I think so.

BTW, we are not the largest producers of carbon...China is..not only because they have the largest population in the world but China's coal is the dirtiest in the world. Yet they are mining and producing more and more coal each year. Is anyone upset over that? Doesn't seem like it....Obama never says anything about China's production. It seems like a lot of people are only interested in our country and forget everyone else who pollute the planet.

Who's going to make a fortune in solar and wind power? Look out west...I understand the favorite Warren Buffet has bought up a lot of land and is installing windmills and solar panels because he plans to be the largest source of electricity in the west after Obama destroys the coal-fired plants.

Not only that, but until the switch can be made to cheaper and better alternatives, your electric rates will be tripling. Then, (just a scenario of what COULD happen) what's to stop those in the solar and wind industry to try to patent/trademark the energy so no one (you or me) could have our own solar panels? That could happen, you know.

Just a few examples/comments on what the future may hold for us little people before solar and wind are truly enough to cover the country's electric thirst. Think about it.

geological events such as earthquakes and volcanoes originate from the earth's crust and magma chamber below. The earth does not "expel it's energy through earthquakes and volcanoes when things heat up too much." (!)

Guns And Intrinsic Danger. Or, "guns Don't Kill, People Kill"Dec 15, 2012
If I were at a party, left the adults and put a nerf ball in the familiy room where the children were playing, nobody'd think anything of it. If I put a loaded gun in there, every adult would rush to get it before the children did. THAT IS BECAUSE GUNS ARE INTRINSICALLY DANGEROUS. The only thing that changed was the presence of a gun, but no one would claim it was actually the children who were dangerous. Suicides by gun are much more likely to result in death than ANY of the other usual ...
