Drone strikes kill 4 Americans, but (sm)

Posted: May 22, 2013

they can't kill the 18 terrorists in Libya who are responsible for the attacks on the consulate.  Holder DOESN'T HAVE ENOUGH EVIDENCE.  He also wants them to have a criminal trial over here - what??  - because he can't send them to Gitmo, because, oh who knows, maybe because Gitmo was supposed to be closed by now.  I think it's just because he doesn't like killing Muslims.  Americans, okay.  This team of thugs and incompetents really needs to get out of Dodge.  Link

So I guess we're A-OK with 100,000+ documented civilian - "collateral damage" War on Terror fatali

[ In Reply To ..]
in Iraq alone (out of sight, out of mind), but 4 WOT drone strike deaths since 2009 (one of whom was a targeted terrorist) is just more than we can bear? Is that about the gist of it?

Of course, only part of that 100,000+ figure represents Americans, another part counts our allies, and the remaining numbers are Iraqi citizen bystanders. Personally I think they ALL should be counted, but for those who are only interested in the dead Americans, try spending a little time on the Iraq Body Count site. I can assure you there are more than 4 of them.

Not the poster you replied to, but that is not what her post - is about - This is 2013 not 2009

[ In Reply To ..]
One has nothing to do with the other. They are two different issues.

Anytime something is wrong you can't go back and pull up something from under Bush that is not related to what is going on now.

You are trying to distract from the topic being discussed, which is the drone strike that killed 4 Americans, not the Iraq war.

I'd like to hear your thoughts on the topic the OP brought up without bringing in something unrelated to it.

Beg to differ. The OP subject is WOT fatalities - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
from drone strikes. Sorry, but I see that as an open invitation to reminisce about ALL WOT fatalities, especially those of innocent bystanders. Maybe you'd like to forget about all that collateral damage, but there will always be someone around to make sure that Does. Not. Happen.

Oh, BTW. A quick trip to the IBC site will reveal the count is ongoing. Latest entry was yesterday. "Mission accomplished!" rang rather hollow with those folks whose loved ones are still dropping like flies in the ongoing aftermath of the invasion...and still not one single WMD sighting, but plenty of IEDs, land mines, unexploded ordinance, etc we left behind still detonating and pumping up those numbers as we speak.

Do you *really* think the Iraqi's have forgotten 2009? - just saying

[ In Reply To ..]
Do you think really that just because a few years have passed since our invasion of Iraq and subsequent annihilation, that THEY have forgotten what we did, and are still doing in foreign lands?

At what point would you forget an invasion on our land - which claimed the lives of tens to hundreds of thousands? At what point?

for his supporters to even think about gaining traction off of the transparent disclosure of drone strike fatalities that killed Americans with well documented terrorist connections. Their repeated denials will NEVER erase the invasion fatalities body count, especially since and those of us who justifiably opposed it from the get-go have been vindicated by the hindsight the historical record has contributed to its memory.

Your best plan would be to move on from this potential "scandal." It will nevever fly....EVER.

Feel free to disagree on that, but keep in mind that there are voters out there just as eager as you are to judge an entire political party population as racist bigots based on the actions and behaviors of a few fringe fanatics. Found an article about it on "CBS Houston." Teachers read a story as if it were a news item, *not* revealing it to be the Boston Tea Party:

"News report: New Act of Terrorism

A local militia, believed to be a terrorist organization, attacked the property of private citizens today at our nation’s busiest port. Although no one was injured in the attack, a large quantity of merchandise, considered to be valuable to its owners and loathsome to the perpetrators, was destroyed. The terrorists, dressed in disguise and apparently intoxicated, were able to escape into the night with the help of local citizens who harbor these fugitives and conceal their identities from the authorities. It is believed that the terrorist attack was a response to the policies enacted by the occupying country’s government. Even stronger policies are anticipated by the local citizens."

The students are then asked if the above meets the criteria of a terrorist act, if it had occurred in American history, and then to discuss whether the students thought it was a terrorist attack and why or why not.

The following, IMO, was the best response to the article: "Misleading article, it leaves out any context about the lesson plan. This "News Story" was to be told to the students as if it were a current event and then get their reactions, only then were they to be told that it was really about the Boston Tea Party.

The point was to teach critical thinking skills to students about not accepting all media reports at face value. Kinda ironic considering that thanks to bad reporting it has now become a real life example of what it was trying to teach our children."

There is a Canadian company (I think it was Canadian) that is buying a whole 25 story building for energy-related jobs. The building will be on what is called the Energy Corridor, so hopefully that will cut down on traffic some, but who knows. Anyone can see business is booming here. Of course there are low-paying jobs. Aren't there McDonald's and Jack in the Boxes everywhere? But if you think that's all that is being created is low paying jobs, you've been listening to the left wing radicals for too long. That's what they would like you to think. Good, lefties stay away. Who were these 4 Americans? - sm

[ In Reply To ..]

So are these folks the GOP's latest cause cé·lè·bre?

Anwar al-Awlaki was an articulate, charismatic Muslim orator and jihadist. He was born in Las Cruces, New Mexico in 1971; he died on Sept. 11, 2011 at age 40. He was called by some "the emir of the Internet" because of his abilities as an orator -- often seen with his hand raised, his finger pointing, his long, thin black beard, sitting-crossed legged behind a podium, preaching, lecturing and calling for jihad against America. His parents were born in Yemen. His father, Nasser, al-Awlaki, came to the U.S. as a Fulbright scholar and studied agriculture economics at Mexico State University, and later received a Ph.D. from the University of Nebraska.

Anwar Al-Awlaki received a B.S. degree in civil engineering from Colorado State in 1994. He reportedly spent one summer while a student living in Afghanistan with the Mujahideen -- former American allies in the Afghan-Soviet War who later became corrupt and gave rise to the Taliban. Al Qaeda was in Afghanistan at that time and al-Awlaki, with his command of Arabic and English, might have become radicalized then.

When he was killed, on Sept. 30, 2011, in Yemen, it was the first known time that a U.S.-controlled drone strike deliberately targeted and killed an American citizen. Obama called it a "major blow to al Qaeda's most active operational affiliate." But many condemned this extra-judicial killing.

Al-Awlaki said that he felt close to Sayyid Qutb, the Egyptian-born writer, and intellectual force of the Muslim Brotherhood. Osama bin Laden was also influenced by Qutb.

Al-Awlaki said that he taught and trained Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, the Nigerian-born "underwear bomber, who was going to bomb Northwest Airlines Flight #523 on Dec. 25, 2009. But he said that he did not order the attack.

Samir Khan.  Also killed in the same drone attack that claimed Al-Awlaki was Samir Khan, a US citizenm of Pakistani heritage.  Khan was born in Saudi Arabia in 1986 and grew up in Queens, New York, in a typical middle-class family. His parents are said to have become worried that as a teenager he was becoming too religious. His family moved to North Carolina and he lived with them until at least 2007. It was during this time, U.S. officials say, that Khan began to help violent jihadist groups online, using his skills on the Web. He seemed to be operating on his own and didn't appear to be tied to any terrorist group.

In 2009, Khan left home for Yemen and became a part of al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula. It was here, again using his computer and literary skills, that Khan started "Inspire," the influential online jihadist magazine. Khan was killed in the same air strike that killed Anwar al-Awlaki.

"I am proud to be a traitor," he told ABC News in 2010.

Jude Kenan Mohammad.  According to the Justice Department, Jude Kenan Mohammad was killed by a U.S. drone in Pakistan. He was a U.S. citizen and former resident of North Carolina. He was born in Florida of a Pakistani father. He went to high school in North Carolina, dropped out in 2006, but later received a GED. In 2008, he left the U.S. to visit his father, who had moved back to Pakistan. He later disappeared into the tribal areas of Pakistan, along the Afghanistan border. There he was trained, most probably by al Qaeda.

In 2009, a North Carolina jury indicted him and others on conspiracy charges to commit terrorism. As an American citizen, with a U.S. passport and American accent, he was the type of person U.S. authorities feared -- and al Qaeda sought -- to wage jihad in America.

Abdulrahman al-Awlaki.  Anwar al-Awlaki and his Egyptian-born wife, Gihan Mohsen Baker, had an American son, born on Sept. 13, 1995, in Denver, while al-Awlaki was a student at Colorado State. His son's name Abdulrahman Anwar al-Awlaki. He was killed at age 16 in a drone strike on Oct. 14, 2011, in Yemen. It, too, was a controversial extra-judicial killing. Some U.S. officials called it a mistake. Even the president is said, in some reports, to have considered it a bad mistake.

It is not clear where the young al-Awlaki was when he was killed. Some reports say that he was in a cafe with friends; other reports that he was sitting by the road eating with friends. His family said that he had run away from home and was trying to find his father. He had no known ties to terrorism.

Former White House press secretary Robert Gibbs, stated that his death was justified, and that he "should have had a more responsible father."
