Fast food workers striking, want $15.00 per

Posted: Aug 29, 2013

for them to live on. McDonald's, Burger King, what other places I did not catch on the news but they are supposed to have a 1 day walk out, I think. How many here only wished they made $15.00 an hour?;

I hope they get fired. nm - MT55

why? - Effie

[ In Reply To ..]
Why would you wish that on them? They just want to make a living...

they have no skills, are in an entry level job - do you really want them to make

[ In Reply To ..]
almost as much as we do? THat devalues our positions even more.
I agree with you - anon

$15 for making fries and flipping burgers is insane.
They are paid peanuts by companies who make BILLIONS - with a "B" in profits!
[ In Reply To ..]
Then, since those FT workers cannot make ends meet, they qualify for taxpayer-funded assistance in order to get by. Is that fair? No... it's pure greed. These people want to work FT and be able to get by in life.

One of the main reasons the $$ has gone down in this field is because of offshoring. Another is that WE allowed it to happen by not coming together (like the FF workers are doing) and demand a better wage. Remember WE were the ones who accepted half CPL for voice wreck. Do you think for a minute that that would have happened if we had a union?

The FF jobs cannot be offshored, and at least some are trying to stand up for themselves... like the Walmart workers also did a few months back. These companies are extremely greedy, make billions off the backs of their workers, and then expect the taxpayers to pick up the slack... not to mention that their (FF companies) product is junk that's making people fat, sick, and a further burden on the taxpayers, and the raw products for their junk are also taxpayer subsidized.

If the FF workers do not get what they're asking for (and IMO deserve), at least they have brought this issue out in the news, and hopefully folks will wake up and not spend their money with these companies who behave badly (remember... corporations are people too).
Why stop at $15, why not $25 an hour? This is all organized by unions because their wages are tied t - MT2

and their wages and benefits will go up.
Yeah... those darned union thugs! - sm

Kinda makes you wonder how Mickey Ds survives in places in Europe where they have unions.

Do you understand how business works? SM - MT55

[ In Reply To ..]
what will happen is the company will just hire less people to make up the difference OR reduce their hours.

Why? It may be "entry-level" work, but it's also - HARD, on-your-feet-all-day work.

[ In Reply To ..]
Fast food workers deserve a fair, livable wage a lot more than most business executives do.

I know this!!! I worked fast food and Walmart when in college - it was a motivation to NOT stay there

[ In Reply To ..]
it should be hard. It should make you want to move on.

I am in the minority but I hope they get fired too - no skills, most only have a GED

[ In Reply To ..]
they aren't worth $15/hour.

I used to work in a Burger King - It is not $15/ work

[ In Reply To ..]
The job itself is not worth $15 an hour. You put together a burger, wrap it in the paper, make french fries, some people wait on customers, take their orders, and other wipe down tables in the dining area or clean the bathrooms. This is not $15. an hour work. You do not need a degree or any special skills to work in a fast food place. People with degrees and other specialized training don't even get paid $15.

I will never eat at another fast food place. Not only because of the food itself but because of this issue. Now I buy Ora-Ida (?) frozen french fries, pour some canola oil in a pan and make my own french fries. Takes 10 minutes and they are delicious. Also I make my own burgers at home in my cast iron skillet in the oven. 3 minutes on one side, flip and 1 minute on the other side with a piece of "real" cheddar cheese. - DELICIOUS!

I saw that too - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
I know it is true, a person making minimum wage more than likely could not survive on their own with that income. The $15 per hour would be $600 per week and after taxes, possible insurance, etc., a person would still only be making around $400-$450 per week. The average rent in my area is $800 per month, so basically it would still take a person 2 paychecks just to pay 1 month's rent. I don't agree though, I mean, I don't make $15 per hour consistently, but I know I couldn't make it on my own right now either.

Rather than giving the employees a raise to $15 an hour, I think what the companies should offer to the workers is something like tuition reimbursement so they can go further in school and get a better job that pays better.

They already do - anon

Did you read your link? - Hamburger University?!?

[ In Reply To ..]
It looks like IF the employees enroll in Mickey D's management program at Hamburger University (lol) they CAN earn college credits toward a 2- or 4- year degree. That doesn't sound like tuition assistance to me. Does it cost the employees to enroll at HU?? Or they offer a lousy $2500 scholarship through Ronald Mcdonald House to select applicants and a whopping $5000 to the "McScholar of the year." Big whoop. How far will $2500 or even $5000 get you in college?

Mickey D's makes plenty of money. They can do better than this.
Fact of the matter is - sm

A monkey can do their job. It's not worth $15/hour. If they get what they want, I will never buy fast food again.
You shouldn't buy fast food now! Have you ever seen how it's - made?
[ In Reply To ..]
Actually you're already buying it now in a way because the ingredients used to make that garbage are subsidized.

And why should it matter if the money the FF companies are making goes to a few at the top (who invest outside the US) or many at the bottom who will more likely spend their money in their own communities. Giving the many at the bottom more spending power and ability to take care of basics without taxpayer assistance benefits all of us... not just them.
It's a lot better than what we get. - nm

Yeah... Hamburger University credits transfer over to clown college. I wanna be Ronald McDonald - when I grow up!
[ In Reply To ..]
And, from what I've read briefly, it's not all that easy to get into Hamburger University (McD's management training program). It's a joke. Actually, if you work for a company that reimburses employees for CMT (or whatever they're calling it), then we might be getting better.
Yeah, well - JJ
[ In Reply To ..]
I personally feel that the CMT has about the same worth as a hamburger.

That is absolutely what they should do. - sm

FF jobs were never intended to serve as a career or means to support a family of four. Unfortunately, economic dynamics and other things (too extensive to expound on here) have brought this sad reality.

I had a 6th grade teacher who harped relentlessly on the importance of students taking education seriously and spelled out vividly how not doing so could impact adulthood. She created a snapshot of future with and without a good education. And she laid it all on us, our responsibility, our future.

I thought about her when I heard about this.

Again, I realize how many things can contribute to someone having to be unfortunate enough to rely on a FF salary to raise a family, and btw, I'm a bleeding heart lib, but $15 an hour is really not working for me.

That comes out to about $30K a year? A lot of entry level college grads don't even make much more than that, depending on the field of course.

Your solution makes PERFECT sense and that is absolutely be what someone should try to make happen.

If FF workers started making $15 an hour, FF would for sure be the most sought-after "career" in America!!

I do hope their action results in at least an increase in pay--sm - anon

[ In Reply To ..]
Many in the fast food industry do work very hard, it is a physically taxing job, even if not mentally. Many jerked around on their hours by their employers. Not to mention, going to college/furthering one's education does not guarantee anybody a job any more. Furthermore, fast food is all some people are capable of. My utopia would include all employees being treated with dignityby their employers, including a decent wage.

I don't care what they earn, I still won't eat that junk. - L&L

[ In Reply To ..]
If MTs cannot make 15/hr, why should hamburger jockies. Wages are not about what you need to liveon, they're about what you're worth in the market place and how easy you are to replace.

Wonder if the strategy is ask for $15 with the hopes of getting something else--sm - anon

[ In Reply To ..]
There are some places where $15 should not be unheard of, some cities are quite expensive to live and work in, but other areas, even getting $10-$12 an hour would be an improvement.

What will happen is you will pay more for your hamburger, the customer will absorb the cost. nm - mtwith6yearstogo

What was particularly interesting was that he went out of his way to declare that he himself wasn't gay.  He didn't want anyone on YouTube to think that! After posting this juv ...

Health Insurers' Fast Food Holdings Raise FlagApr 16, 2010
(CBS)  The investments of large insurers of health, disability and long term care in fast food chains like McDonald's and Pizza Hut have raised the interest of a study in the American Journal of Public Health, reports CBS Radio News' John Hartge. The Harvard Medical School's Dr. Wesley Boyd, an author of the study, finds it ironic that these firms would invest nearly $2 billion in companies that sell food often linked to obesity and cardiovascular disease. Local Fast Food Restaurant Paying $15.00. Success StoryOct 30, 2014
There has been a lot of discussion on this board about raising the minimum wage to $15.00 and I have been very vocal about being in favor of this. I have listened to how the prices of everything will go up, they do anyway. Think of gas prices. Just mention the word hurricane or bad weather and even before a hurricane forms they are raising the prices of gas. Just talk about cold weather hitting Florida and orange juice goes through the roof. So they will raise prices regardless. But my main reas ...
