100 examples of wasteful spending in 2010.  This is the problem and both parties have had a major hand in it.  You all wanna talk about raising taxes and blaming republicans, but as you can see from this link.....revenue is a very small part of the problem.  Obviously many politicians have had no problem with spending our money without batting an eyelash.  Many want to blame Bush for his tax cuts.  Fine...I didn't agree with the tax cuts either.  They might have worked if we hadn't been spending so much money at the time with 2 wars, etc.  However, I don't see the people who were against said tax cuts giving extra money in taxes.  As much as many complained, I didn't see them ignore the tax cuts and pay more taxes voluntarily.  Our biggest revenue problem is when we have loopholes that are so outrageous that companies like GE can get away with not paying any taxes at all.

Many of you talk about companies making more money and yet still aren't hiring because they are greedy.  Obviously none of you have run a business.  My husband runs a business.  He has seen improvement and yes...they have made more money here recently but with the economy so unstable no business person in their right mind would sink more money into hiring employees when they don't know what the future economy holds.  It is called covering your butt and saving money for a rainy day.  If they invested their money and hired more people, they could potentially have to fire or lay off a lot of people when the pooh hits the fan again....and let's face it folks...the pooh is hitting the fan again.  We are heading for a double dip...and I'm not talking about the good ice cream cone kind either...although and double dip mint chocolate chip cone sounds pretty good right about now.

This "debt crisis" didn't happen in just 1 day.  This has been a snowball that has gotten bigger and bigger over the years.  I wouldn't have a problem going back to the tax rate back during Clinton's administration.  However, the economy is so bad it will hurt us initially.  I do believe the best way to get more revenue is to close some of these loopholes that everyone abuses and uses when they can, but I doubt many politicians are gonna go for that since some of their biggest money supporters use those loopholes themselves...like Immelt...ya know...Obama's GE buddy.  But obviously there is a HUGE wasteful spending problem.  I believe we should go through this waste before we even talk about entitlement reform....which I believe should be looked into as well.  If we could get those people who are able to work from mooching from the government and actually work themselves....perhaps we could really help those who need the assistance.  However, we need jobs here in the US for that to work too.

Thanks for the rant...but check out the list of waste in 2010.

but will go back and read more later, even though I'm disgusted! I know this is money already spent, but it makes you wonder how many projects like these are receiving taxpayer money today and how many are slated to get money in the future.

We should all be emailing and calling our senators and representatives telling them to stop this kind of garbage NOW! Tell them you want them to spend your money on essentials, not a museum for old casino signs! This is the kind of trash that should be stopped before ever looking to raise taxes and cutting entitlement programs.

If you don't know how to get a hold of your senator and representative,go to www.congress.org. You can put in your zip code and it will give you all the information you need, as well as information about what bills are coming before congress and how your senator and representative have voted on past bills. If you're not involved, don't wait any longer!!

What to you all think about VP Biden charging the secret service $1600 a month rent for the cottage on his estate in Delaware?

They could always move to another location and - we could pick up the tab for

[ In Reply To ..]

the rent and transportation expenses back and forth, which would probably cost at least as much, if not more.  That way the arrangement could be much less convenient and considerably less secure, but at least it would silence the whiners and, after all, that's what matters the most, huh?

As you can see from the aerial view below, their current adjacent location allows the SS to have a direct view of the access road to the property and all the grounds that surround the residence 24/7, an advantage that would be lost should they have to commute.   Edwin Donovan, SS agent, said after Biden's mom, who had lived in the cottage, died in January, Biden offered to rent it to the SS, but they declined.  At that time, they were already leasing an apartment nearby.  Another tenant rented it and after she moved out, the SS approached Biden about renting it (not the other way around) since leasing the house was a unique opportunity for the agents to more efficiently protect Biden and the property.  Specifically, Donovan said, "Logistically and security-wise, this is much better for us."

Fact:  The SS pays rent for housing regardless of who the landlord is.  Fact:  The SS is required by law to protect former, current and future national leaders and their families.  Fact:  Biden is charging the same as the previous tenant paid, not more, so apparently the amount is what the market will bear.  Fact:  That price for a rental property in a wooded, secluded, exclusive waterfront property in DE is not excessive and actually sounds like quite a bargain.  Fact:  The whiners will try their best to make a mountain out of this molehill.

As an afterthought, I see no reason why Biden should not receive rent on a rental property, just like he did before and just like he could if the SS were not occupying the cottage.  Nor do I see any reason the SS should not pay rent on this particular rental property, since they customarily pay rent in any other location.  Personally, I would much prefer to live in a waterfront cottage on a 4-acre wood spread than in an apartment building any day, especially if I could gain the added advantage of making my job easier and more effective.

I am not whining, justm aking an observation. In this time of financial crisis when we are hearing that the "rich" should make financial sacrifices, it just seemed unseemly to me that the VP should put yet another burden on us as he does not appear to be a hardship case and he is the one who is receiving the protective services that we are paying for.
It is a rental property, not tax haven. The SS would be paying rent if they - lived elsewhere, so
[ In Reply To ..]
again, why is this an issue? The rental property is adjacent to his private property, and provides an ideal site, both logistically and in terms of securing his safety, as the SS is required to do by law.

The sacrifice the "rich" are being called upon to make is all about their taxes, not what they choose to do with their private property.

Well, if companies are refusing to hire, then they should - have the Bush tax cuts ended. sm

The Republicans never saw a tax loophole they didn't love, a rich person who couldn't buy them, or a poor/underemployed/middle class person they didn't want to bring down even further until they all have third-world incomes and lifestyles.

Unfortunately, we look like a bunch of clowns to the entire world, and that's because of the way the Republicans/Tea Partiers (especially) have been acting with their little hissy fits. They came very close to driving this country over a cliff, and some publicly stated that they WANT the government to be shut down.

The S&P lowering of our credit rating has played out in public, and it's no wonder we're seen as not being stable, given the antics of the TP clowns.

Good job, TPs. You made history since this is the first time in history that our credit rating was lowered, and the credit goes to you!

Any more tricks up your sleeves that could hurt our country badly? I'm sure there are.

But in the meantime, the S&P saw what the rest of us have seen, and it's no surprise they don't believe we're stable, because as long as these TPs and other Republicans are in office with such rabid feelings about Obama and blocking him every step of the way (even voting AGAINST their OWN ideas if Obama were to agree with them), we're just that: a country ruled by clowns that just can't be trusted.

How about this - xx

You don't suppose the MASSIVE spending in recent years by the president with BORROWED money has anything to do with it?

You would think people would - sm

that simple concept but apparently they are too blinded by party lines to realize that. Much easier to blame a group that is very recent to event exist for the abuse in Washington that has been going on for a much longer period of time.

And you are 100% blinded by your party lines - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
There isn't a politician alive who isn't rich or who doesn't receive money from the rich. Why you all continue to blame one party more than the other is absolute nonsense.

Our biggest problem is spending. Yes, the Bush tax cuts cost us money and regardless of what kool-aid you are drinking, trust me when I say not all republicans liked the tax cuts. I was never for them. However, in this economy...I'd much rather reform the tax code, lower the tax rate and then close loopholes. We would receive more revenue that way and big companies like GE (Obama's pal Immelt) will have to pay their fair share of taxes instead of paying none.

I also do not see how so many are quick to blame the Tea Party on this. All they wanted were spending cuts. When you have a spending problem that won't be solved with raising taxes on the rich....the only solution is spending cuts. That is why they didn't want a debt cealing deal without significant spending cuts. Obama is the one who came to the table kicking and screaming because he just wanted to raise the debt ceiling without any cuts whatsoever and when he finally compromised a bit....he took so many things off of the table that couldn't be cut.

I'm not going to blame all of this on Obama. The American people have been screwed by those in Washington for too long. However, since the economy is very bad....people are just now starting to pay more attention to political details. Obama is partly to blame but this has been coming on for a long time.

The reason we lost our credit rating isn't because of a recent group calling for spending cuts (the tea part). We lost our rating because we have once again raised our debt ceiling without making enough spending cuts. Many presidents have raised the debt ceiling without any nitches....but now we are spending so much that we cannot keep this pace. If we do you might as well stick us with a fork because we are DONE!

Whether you want to face up to it or not, Obama has spent a record amount of money in a short period of time with very little if any help stimulating the economy. You want to blame Bush...fine. He is partly to blame as well...but I am so sick of you people wanting to blame everyone but our current president when he too is to blame for this situation.

I'm not blinded by party lines to not realize that Bush hurt us....Obama is hurting us more. We cannot survive another term of Obama. We also could not survive another term with someone like Bush either. Our country needs a REAL change. Not just a bunch of empty promises. Obama himself gave him 3 years to turn the economy around and he hasn't done it. It is time for him to get a pink slip....lie so many Americans have been getting in the recent years.
