Extreme fatigue (worse than normal) any ideas?

Posted: Mar 5, 2013

I know it is the most common complaint doctors hear - and for years I have had the stressed-tired-overworked fatigue - I know how that one feels.  But this has been going on a couple of months.  I am bone tired even after I sleep a lot.  My blood work showed I am hypothyroid so I started on medicine and also some supplements for that.  But nothing seems to be helping.  I have pain/fatigue across the area of my back right at the braline.  My arms and neck feel heavy.  I have a tingling sensation that crawls across the right side of my upper back sometimes.  It usually lasts a few minutes and then goes away.  I can barely function to get my transcription work done.  I don't have insurance so the recent blood work I had was all I could afford right now - had a CBC, Chem-7, liver panel and TSH checked.  I also recently had, for about a week, a band of numbness and burning pain across my left thigh, about 3 inches wide, almost all the way around my leg.  I would like to hear from anyone who is actually hypothyroid, or maybe has MS (because I am wondering about that), or anyone who has any other thoughts on this.  It is not depression - I am on an antidepressant and it works fine.  I even upped my dose and it dit no help the fatigue at all.   We are not talking about just being kinda tired and sleepy - I am talking bone-deep, crushing fatigue.  I just want to give up and lay in my bed and cry.    Thanks for any help.

you might try either a different or additional antidepressant for a couple of months.

I don't know how old you are, but it could be hormonal. I've noticed that 1 week out of the month I get the fatigue you're describing. I combat this with energy-boosting foods and vitamins like oranges, apples, raw almonds, peanut butter, meat (including beef jerky), and B vitamins, also by increasing my fiber intake (who doesn't feel better after a good bowel movement), and also by reducing my sugar consumption.

It could also be that your CO2 levels are too high, meaning you could have heart and/or lung inefficiency. Not getting enough oxygen can cause that extreme fatigue feeling, even if you're not feeling particularly short of breath. (FYI, yawning is the body's attempt to bring in more oxygen.) Some suggestions would be to exercise more (preferably outdoors when/if possible) and to add house plants with large leaves to bring more oxygen into the house.

If you can afford it, have your vitamin D level checked - VP

I was diagnosed with melanoma a few years back with instructions to stay out of the sun. Given some time, I was dealing with extreme fatigue and muscle heaviness/soreness, almost a feeling of weakness with regular activities (like sitting up straight or lifting a gallon of milk). I could easily sleep in excess of 8 hours a night and still feel exhausted. Turns out that my vitamin D was waaaaay low, and I had to take a high-dose supplement for a few weeks followed by recheck of level and maintenance on a lower dose. I'm (slightly) hypothyroid (on 25 mcg Synthroid), and I had these symptoms while on the Synthroid as well.

Hope this helps, and I hope you feel better.

I responded on the Health board - why post on both?

Plus I am desperate for some answers and would like as many people as possible to see my post who might have some advice for me. I appreciate your answer. Once I realized there was a health board, I thought that possibly more people with health issues, who might have some answers for me, might actually see my post there. Is that okay with you?

My fatigue got so bad, I sat down and cried after it had been going on for 4 days because I couldn't take it anymore. I went to the clinic and it turns out, I had a UTI! I had no urinary symptoms such as burning, blood, cloudy urine, etc. I did have a very low-grade fever, but didn't really know it. They placed me on an antibiotic and withing 3 days I started to perk up. Was fully recovered in 7 days.

Good luck and I hope they find out what it is.

My mother was euthyroid my entire life and my best friend was hypothyroid. The extreme fatigue was a problem when the medication wasn't where it should be, but they never complained of any tingling or numbness or pain. I have also had extreme fatigue where it took every ounce I had to be able to get my work done, but for me it turned out to be a combination of not eating enough calories, sleep apnea, and just plain ole stress and wacky hours. The heaviness could just be from the exhaustion, but I definitely think you should get checked out. Maybe the tingling and pain is just something simple like your back being out. I know what you mean about no insurance I have the same problem. But, like a previous poster, I also have doctors that don't charge me as much per visit as someone who has insurance.

Although you may not be overweight, try a diet drug like Fastin. See below. Just a thought. It is supposed to boost energy and fatigue.

Does anyone else suffer from extreme fatigue?  I'm so tired I can't even type.  Just walking a few steps is tiring.   Some days are better than others.  I have a hard time lifting my legs to get into my truck or into bed.  I do have hypothyroidism.  I'm overweight but can't seem to lose any weight.  My metabolism is pratically nil.  Now my doctor has put the depression tag on me so I'm basically screwed about having anyth ...

I've struggled with this one on and off for decades.  I like Dr. Wilson's line of supplements but have discovered that eating on a schedule is even more important to healing.  Right now mine are completely fried; I am pretty sick. So...are You Weird Or Normal?Sep 14, 2011
I have a good friend who told me that I have a weird life. I started thinking about it and I realized that my life has been weird since before I was born! Let's see: I'm not only an identical twin, but a mirror twin as well (only 25% of identical twins are mirror twins)--odds of that happening: about 1 in 1000 births I'm left handed--about 10% of the population are left handed. I'm a color blind woman--normally only about .4% of women are color blind , but my color ...

Anyone See That New TLC Show Extreme Couponing?Jan 05, 2011
I only saw one episode and am addicted. It's insane! For those of you who have not seen it, this show follows 4 people who are considered extreme couponers.  These people spend hours and hours finding and cutting out coupons to save money. It shows how many items they bought, what they bought, what their original bill would be, and how much they actually paid after their coupons. They have a system down, very organized almost to the point of OCD. They showed their stacks upon stacks of ...

For those who resented the positive news I posted of a continued decrease in unemployment, AND for those who are always interested in more of the story, good times and bad, I post this. Faking Normal - Interesting Article And Some GoodMay 29, 2016
I am not single, but I do suffer from many of the issues in this article. I do NOT, however, feel compelled to keep up with the Joneses on bragbook at all, nor do I feel I cover up my situation. However, you don't want everyone to know you went bankrupt now, do you? So some element of daily subterfuge is required. The article is about being a woman, older, and unemployed. I am not unemployed, but I may as well be, working my butt off for 40 hours a week for slightly more than minimum wage. ...

Extreme Weather At All Time Lows As Climax Hoax Apr 29, 2017
The Church of Global Warming has many followers and, because it’s a cult-like religious belief to them, no amount of hard data will ever convince them they adhere to the teachings of a false god. Nevertheless, it is incumbent upon the non-establishment, honest alternative media to report what is and what isn’t: And what isn’t is the supposed increase in “extreme weather” due to “global warming/climate change” caused by humans. Climate Depot points this out in a new report tha ...

Stocking Ideas......Dec 20, 2010
Just wondering what everyone uses as stocking stuffers besides the usual fruits and nuts.  I read another post under the DH/SO post about the sweet gifts in a stocking so just thought we could share some tips too.  I usually just fill ours with the usual:  Fruits, nuts, chocolates, batteries to accompany gifts, candies.  My 18-yo informed me that bobby pins would make great stocking stuffers so I might add that this year!
