I stand by the "animal" in my post about the protesters

Posted: Apr 27, 2015

because yesterday, they trashed a car(s), threw bottles at the police, and broke store windows with trash cans, besides throwing trash cans, bottles, liquids, at police AND people trying to get into the stadium to see the game.

Plus, they robbed an RT reporter:

Now, the warning has come out from the Bloods, Crips, and Black Guerilla gangs that they are banding together to kill the cops. Nice, huh?

There is NO excuse for this behavior. Note in the first video how young those kids are. They think they're being cool but I think they'll be in jail or dead by the time or even before they're 21. Whatta shame. Then the do-gooders wonder why there are more blacks in jail or dead from violence than there are whites.  The videos tell the story.

She made it very clear that she instructed the police to do everything that they could to make sure that the protesters were able to exercise their right to free speech - and while trying to make sure the protesters were protected, it also gave space to those who wished to destroy.

She didn't say anything about giving destroyers their space, as some media outlets have suggested. It's really unfortunate that so many have misconstrued the mayor's words and sentiments.

If you watched the video, you know she did not say that.

Here’s her full comment:

“I made it very clear that I work with the police and instructed them to do everything that they could to make sure that the protesters were able to exercise their right to free speech,” Rawlings-Blake said. “It’s a very delicate balancing act. Because while we try to make sure that they were protected from the cars and other things that were going on, we also gave those who wished to destroy space to do that as well. And we worked very hard to keep that balance and to put ourselves in the best position to de-escalate.”
First of all, the vandals and looters have little - to nothing to do with the protest.
[ In Reply To ..]
People like that come out of the woodwork whenever ANYTHING exciting happens: Protests, sports team wins, sports team losses, St. Patrick's Day, Cinco de Mayo, and anything else that just might happen to involve alcohol.

As for the protest, you know that that's about, right? About a detained suspect (the word "SUSPECT" is key here... the man had not been officially charged with a crime or tried yet) who appears to be fairly intact while being loaded into a paddy wagon, later "mysteriously" develops a broken neck and nearly-severed spinal cord.

It seems a little funny that there is no bystander volunteering a video from their smartphone on this. There are "hundreds" of smartphones being used at the protests.

[ In Reply To ..]
It's true that no one knows exactly how Mr. Gray was injured, or by whom. However, no one is jumping the gun with respect to the culpability of the police. The man did not have a severed spinal cord before being taken into police custody.

An investigation is just that. That's why the "instant arrests" can't happen and those instigating these protests need to leave town and go back where they came from. You can't know the truth until the investigation is complete.

What would you do if you were arrested and sent to jail without a thorough investigation of the charges? I don't think you'd like it. That's called tyranny. Is that what you want?

Everyone seems to be making judgement based on certain media stories. Has innocent until proven guilty been replaced with guilty until proven innocent? That seems to be the case in today's world and it's just wrong.

I don't understand why you think the criminal elements committing crimes are racist. That seems to be a leap. I also don't agree that the people "usually wind up being liars." There is no evidence to support that.

In a most recent case of a cop shooting a citizen, it was the cop that lied and was summarily arrested. That certainly wouldn't prompt me to say that cops "usually wind up being liars."

[ In Reply To ..]
Unless we live in Baltimore and know 100% of the cops there, there is no way we can jump to conclusions on a percentage figure like that.

Even if we did, "good" is a subjective term. Some people might think it's "good" to shoot African Americans because they assume they're all thugs anyway. Other people might think "good" is giving people the right to a fair trial and treating all people as innocent until proven guilty.

Sadly I'm not surprised - They are thugs

[ In Reply To ..]
that officials on the left like Elijah Cummings don't seem to have a problem with the rioting, vandalism and violence going on right now. Police killing someone needlessly is dead wrong, but so is what's going on in the streets right now. Most of those rioting in Baltimore now don't really care what the cause or issue is, they just want an excuse to act like hooligans.

group of protesters? They almost always manage to find their way in, and end up inciting the violence that the regular protesters are against. Not all of them are your run-of-the-mill "street thugs", either. In Oakland during the Occupy demonstrations, some of the worst inciters of violence turned out to be a group of black-clad, face-covered, Ninja-esque "plants", whose sole purpose in being there was to incite violence so that the police would have an excuse to use all their new war-toys on everyday civilians. And the sad thing is, this didn't just happen once, and it didn't just happen in Oakland. It's happening around the nation. The powers that be want to silence the masses, and calling all protesters "thugs", "looters" and "rioters" is just one way of justifying what they're doing. Open your eyes, people, if your town has an overly-militarized police force, then all this could soon be coming to a town near you.

The right-wing propaganda media slime that want to televise these riots and spew divisive commentary fanning the fames and criticize Elijah Cummings for politicization of it have absolutely no room to talk. Right-wing talking heads are masters at politicization and right-wing politicians have been fund raising and politicizing the tragic deaths of Americans for a long time now.

You asked: "Still think the rioters are not thugs and animals?"

Since you asked: The technique that right-wing media uses to fan the flames that we're now seeing used on this board on a regular basis is called dehumanization; it's the psychological process of demonizing the perceived enemy, making them seem less than human and hence not worthy of humane treatment. Like the City of Ferguson personnel sending around e-mails depicting the President of the United States as a monkey, referring to African Americans as dogs, etc., all of this type garbage feeds into the fanning the flames and mistreatment of humans. This type of dehumanization has been used throughout the centuries and leads to increased violence, human rights violations, war crimes, and even genocide because this type propaganda and making jokes in this vein all serve to fan the flames that make otherwise decent and God fearing people see other humans as fair game to treat as they wish since they're considered subhuman.

They did interview those people who were out trying to show solidarity for the community. I wish I could remember what they were singing - they repeated a phrase over and over - what comes to mind is something about "we will rise up" or we are rising up - very positive reporting from Fox News---
but then you wouldn't care about that....

I did watch Fox news last night for about an hour and saw multiple interviews with people on the street - if they interrupted, it was to remind them that they couldn't curse. Fox News had a live camera in Baltimore, and they came across many peaceful protesters and Shep Smith said he thought that they needed to be seen too. Amidst all the fabricated, biased, slanted, psychobabble, and character assassinating "news" you can find on Fox, Shep Smith just might be the single redeeming quality they've got going for them. He's been known to call the Fox talking heads and pundits on their utter ridiculousness. (see link)

As good as he is, poor old Shep can't make up for the other 24/7/365 wall-to-wall crap that the Fox right-wing fear-and-smear propaganda channel foists on trusting people and labels "news." I don't get it either; so much of this "news" is obviously fabricated, no basis in fact, and pure speculation, but people don't question it because it's exactly what they want to hear, even when time after time that Fox has been proven to fabricate.

Why are people so quick to buy into all the lies on Fox? I guess I never will understand the level of pure unadulterated hate towards others that I've seen coming from that so-called "news" network. Do people really believe that Keith Ablow can diagnose people he doesn't know or the President of the United States from television clips? What kind of self-respecting professional would diagnose someone from afar? He's a psychiatrist, not a psychologist, and therefore not qualified to be giving these type of character diagnoses at all, forget about the fact that he's not actually talking to the people he's diagnosing. Are people actually gullible enough to believe this charlatan can actually diagnose the President of the United States on television? Does Ablow in some way empower or inspire people into thinking they have insight into diagnosing other humans they don't know?

I wrote a post on the Politics board to which you responded. Do you now really think you know me? Do you actually have any idea what I care about other than what I wrote on that post? Is that you, Dr. Ablow? Maybe Chuck Krauthammer? I'd venture to guess maybe some of the other media diagnostic psychiatric commentators, but Fox News is the only "news" network that actually employs what I refer to as the psycho babblers. :)

The idiot talking heads on MSNBC aren't sitting around and spinning tall tales like the idiots on Fox News sitting around spewing psychobabble drivel about how Baltimore being burned is all Obama's fault and are not like the other hot bag of wind radio shock jocks claiming that this kind of thing in Baltimore is going to keep happening as long as black people keep voting for Democrats.

Fox News wasn't around in 1992, but if they were, can you in your wildest dreams imagine the talking heads on Fox News sitting around for 6 days and blaming the widespread looting, arson, assault, 50+ murders, and over $1 billion in property damage that was done then on President George H. W. Bush? Can you imagine a Fox News host blaming the violence against the police in Los Angeles on President Bush 41 and asserting that "there is a war on law enforcement" that is being corroborated if not condoned by the Bush administration? Can you imagine a Fox News television psychiatrist in 1992 diagnosing Bush 41 as part of "read my lips" the root of the country's problem?

Better yet, you don't even have to use your imagination for this one, do you remember the weeks and weeks of news after 9/11--after watching the streets of New York City in chaos and watching the twin towers burn and fall to the ground--a psychiatrist on Fox News making the claim that President George W. Bush wasn't doing enough to protect the U.S. from terrorists because "how can you protect a country you don't like?" Think about that.

Fox News is propaganda. They're fanning the flames, and people aren't putting 2+2 together anymore. They're listening to this drivel on Fox News and in right-wing propaganda media that is designed to enrage and keep them agitated and blaming their fellow Americans and blaming government for the country's problems. Why do you suppose Fox only points the finger at government when a Bush is not President of the United States?

Yet if we get a third President Bush in office in 2017, very much like we saw happen in 2009, Fox will flip the script, turn on a dime, and start back with the daily rhetoric of what a terrific government we have and how people that don't support our nation building efforts in the Middle East are traitors to their country.

Can't people ever stop for just one teeny, tiny second and figure out the fact that real news media don't constantly find fault when one party is running government and flip the script back to government is great when the other party is leading it? Figure it out, people. "News" that constantly informs its viewers that the world's ills can almost always be traced back to a few Democrats is NOT news! Blaming the current administration for the deaths of 4 dead Americans while giving a pass to the previous one for the deaths of 3,000 is not objective news reporting!

Perspective on rioting - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
This says what I have been thinking and trying to convey.

When nonviolence begins halfway through the war with the aggressor calling time out, it exposes itself as a ruse.

When nonviolence is preached as an attempt to evade the repercussions of political brutality, it betrays itself. When nonviolence begins halfway through the war with the aggressor calling time out, it exposes itself as a ruse. When nonviolence is preached by the representatives of the state, while the state doles out heaps of violence to its citizens, it reveals itself to be a con. And none of this can mean that rioting or violence is "correct" or "wise," any more than a forest fire can be "correct" or "wise." Wisdom isn't the point tonight. Disrespect is. In this case, disrespect for the hollow law and failed order that so regularly disrespects the rioters themselves.

In an interview with Mike Wallace, Dr. King stated:

"I will never change in my basic idea that non-violence is the most potent weapon available to the Negro in his struggle for freedom and justice. I think for the Negro to turn to violence would be both impractical and immoral."

The above quote should be written in the sky in Baltimore and any other city that the thugs try to take over.

He also stated his views on violence (I have separated the sentences so they would stand out). He was a very wise and truthful man.

"The ultimate weakness of violence is that it is a descending spiral,
begetting the very thing it seeks to destroy."

"Instead of diminishing evil, it multiplies it."

"Through violence you may murder the liar, but you cannot murder the lie, nor establish the truth."

"Through violence you may murder the hater, but you do not murder hate."

"In fact, violence merely increases hate."

"So it goes. Returning violence for violence multiplies violence,
adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars."

"Darkness cannot drive out darkness:
only light can do that."

"Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that."

Here is what came after the very powerful one-liner... - sm

And I must say tonight that a riot is the language of the unheard. And what is it America has failed to hear? It has failed to hear that the plight of the negro poor has worsened over the last twelve or fifteen years. It has failed to hear that the promises of freedom and justice have not been met. And it has failed to hear that large segments of white society are more concerned about tranquility and the status quo than about justice and humanity.
And he also called on the clergy to help spread his - message in the church,

And what does this even have to do with the topic at hand? I don't think anyone has a problem with CLERGY spreading their message in CHURCH (or in the community). That's where clergy belongs (NOT in the government).
Because religion it is said has no place - in politics and it's relevant

about the "one-liner." I don't understand what's religious about that.

It's called tribalism. - NM

[ In Reply To ..]
NM

It is all tribalism--the police activity is protecting - their tribe too

[ In Reply To ..]
I sure hope the comment of it being tribalism wasn't a derogatory remark, and was a purely sociopolitical observation.

When is something the right says NOT a - derogatory remark? lol

Tribalism vs subculture - see msg for definitions

[ In Reply To ..]
Merriam Webster:

Subculture: "A group that has beliefs and behaviors that are different from the main groups within a culture or society."

Tribalism: "Tribal consciousness and loyalty; especially exaltation of the tribe above other groups: strong in-group loyalty"

Tribalism would only make sense if it was only African Americans or even just the impoverished rioting, but it's not. Especially the "exaltation" aspect of the definition is missing in this case. Since none of those things apply, the rioters more closely fit the definition of subculture, meaning that this behavior is not the norm for either society OR a culture within it.

Political and religious extremist groups sure do check all the boxes of the definition of tribalism, though, especially the group-exaltation/superiority-complex part.

"animal" is a euphemism here - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
The videos tell a story about rioters and unlawful behavior. The videos are NOT telling a story about why more blacks are in jail than whites.

"Animal" is becoming the new "N-Word", as it is being used as a stand-in for more pointed and obvious racial slurs.

I don't really care what name you apply to violent rioters. I do have concern about how euphemisms are being used to take the place of the usual racial epithets.

Using the A-word rather than the N-word doesn't give one a bigger halo. No one is confused by its use.

There is no logic in referring to my opinion as made-up stuff. There is no debate in calling me a radical.

How shall we characterize your method of logic and debate?

epithets and euphemisms are only used by the real "tribalists" - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
That word was used earlier in this thread and according to Merriam-Webster, tribalism is actually behavior exhibited by those only loyal to their culture and consider their group "exalted" above other groups.

True "tribalists" use such derogatory euphemisms/epithets to describe members of other "tribes" not only because they truly believe other "tribes" are inferior, but because they have no understanding/empathy of what it must feel like to be chronically treated as an inferior, not to mention their only experience with members of any other "tribes" is from watching the worst-case scenario members make headline news.

They don't realize the majority of other "tribe" members don't behave that way, in much the same way as they apparently have no awareness that the rest of the world thinks Americans are all stupid, lazy, arrogant, ungrateful, greedy, vapid, vain, gold-digging and shallow Kim Kardashians because their only experience with Americans is what they see on the news and TV.

None of these blanket-generalized stereotypes are true, and yet the small-minded, arrogant, ignorant, gullible, uneducated and inexperienced will continue to believe and use such derogatory terms. It's to be pitied, really. Because like medieval villagers, they lack greater experience with the world at large and their minds are so small, they feel threatened by anything new and different and lash out at it; quite simply, they don't know/weren't taught how to behave any better

Seductive logic and preductive logic, neither of - which I agree with. nm

Those aren't legitimate logic terms, but which statements are considered unsound or invalid? - sm OP
[ In Reply To ..]
If you've ever studied logic at a university level, you will know an argument is either sound or unsound, valid or invalid, and the logic used is either deductive or inductive, but there is no such thing as "seductive" or "preductive" logic.

I'd be happy to debate the argument point further, but first I would need an actual argument rebuttal other than just "I don't agree with it."

To be clear, my argument was:

"Premise #1: Some people from a specific tribe called members of another specific tribe "animals" without mention of a single exception.

Premise #2: Some people from the same specific tribe asserted animal behavior as being inferior to human behavior.

Argument Conclusion: Therefore, some people from a specific tribe believe all members of another tribe are inferior to themselves as humans."

If the premises are sound, then the argument is valid, sorry.

However, if the premises are NOT sound, then adjustments would need to be made by the OP and others to include any exceptions to their original declarative statements.

Thus far, no such adjustments have been made to the premises and no rebuttal arguments have been given. Until those things happen, the the premises are considered sound and my argument is valid as truth, whether we like that truth or not.
It sounds like you are debating yourself, and any - brevity is the key to
[ In Reply To ..]
communication.
And yet the brevity in this communication still provided no true rebuttal argument against my point - sm OP
[ In Reply To ..]
I'm not easily distracted off debate points by focusing on irrelevancies or insults, but it's okay, I'll just wait for that debate point rebuttal against my actual point, then. Thanks
I don't know what it is you want to debate. I thought - we cleared up the misunderstanding
[ In Reply To ..]
about the word animal.
Apparently there is another "sm" commenting in this thread - sm OP
[ In Reply To ..]
I see the misunderstanding you're talking about above, but that's not me. I put an "OP" after mine to distinguish between us, but apparently it didn't help. Sorry for the confusion
